11 May 5:30pm (film starts 6pm), RIO CINEMA, London E8 2PB
H is for Hostile Environment (UK), 33 mins, 2022

Over 2021-22 artist Edwin Mingard, researcher Keren Weitzberg and a network of people who've experienced the UK government's anti-migration policies came together to make a film. Told from many perspectives that illuminate the inhumanity of the UK border regime whilst shining a light and celebrating the diverse communities that constitute London.

Pouyan fled the regime in Iran and made the dangerous land and sea journey crossing to England. Usman spent 50 days in a detention centre and lived to tell the tale. An undocumented Londoner tells us why he moved and what it's like living under the radar.

Join us for the local premiere of this major new work in the heart of East London where the film was made.

FUTURE PRODUCERS present RISING: A MANIFESTO

Over the past couple of months an incredible group of artists have collectively turned their radical manifesto, and wider collective thoughts and sensibilities, into an artists' film. The work explores the political, ecological and spiritual dimensions of the groups' artistic practice in what is both a reckoning and a celebration; an impressionistic portrait and a statement of intent.

The project was
directed by the Future Producers and , shot and edited by
the group and , collaboratively soundtracked
with , and graded by . It all went
down as well as , ,
and other culturally and spiritually important
locations chosen by the group.

We were happy to play a supporting role in the creation of such an important work. Watch the film here: https://www.somersethouse.org.uk/blog/rising-manifesto (or search future producers rising manifesto)

Announcing our sixth AiR Drop artist in residence: 👈

Khatun is a Leicester-born visual artist now based in London. Working primarily with photography, moving image and mixed media, Khatun works closely with notions of identity, belonging and family. Inspired by her dual South Asian-British identity, she constantly explores the fine line between culture and the heavy influence of national identity. AiR Drop will see Khatun work on two projects: her current work-in-progress 'Age', and a short video exploring sound based on a pre-written collaborative poem.

'Age' is a photographic body of work intertwined with transcripts exploring the notion of age. Using dialogue to explore the joy of growth as well as the stresses and expectations and imposed by culture and society and that follow, it is, essentially, a timeline of people at various ages and stages in life. The second project centres on a collaborative poem written by Khatun and Georgia Sheridan. It is an exploration of how sound infiltrates our lives and works with and around our identities and their relationship with the East Midlands being a focus point. As part of the residency, Khatun will experiment with collected audio and visuals for both projects to understand how sound and moving image can exist and live in both projects.
