What did some of the greatest basketball players in recent years have in common? They learned from George Mumford, a professional mental coach.

Having a top-notch mental game is crucial. Rebounding from setbacks, pushing through adversity, and staying cool in clutch moments has never been more valuable.

And this isn't just in sports. Though performance psychology is most easily measured through sport, it is just as important in business, family, music, art, and other pursuits.

Focusing on improvement this year could mean getting a coach, or developing a personal program to improve your self-talk and mental toughness. Whatever you decide, commit to developing your mental strength and skills this year. Your future self will thank you for it.

It isn't how hard the class is, or how complex the problem to be solved. It isn't how good the other team is, or how heavy the weight is. The biggest reason for not achieving success is our own belief. Our pride. Our ego. Our laziness.

The ability to be self-aware can help you improve more than anything else. Being self-aware means having a true idea of your skills and talents. Not being too harsh, and not being too generous. Being realistic, and moving forward from where you currently are.

Take some time today to ponder what you want, and how you might be getting in your own way.

This is the difference between proactive thinking, and positive thinking. How you approach the situation makes all the difference.

There is a lot of buzz around positive thinking these days. Positive thinking is great, but you can take it to another level.

By focusing on what needs to be done, you can not only be positive you can make progress towards your goals, or mitigating whatever trials come your way.

Ever thought of keeping a performance journal? Without tracking your progress, you may be missing out on potential improvement.

When lifting weights, we keep track of how we did last week so that we know how to push ourselves this week. Why shouldn't any other skill be the same?

Making sure to acknowledge where we did well (so we can repeat it) and where we can improve (so we can change it) is crucial for improvement.

Having a coach is helpful because they can often see what a performer cannot. Keeping a journal is almost like a way to coach yourself!

Do you use a performance journal? How do you use it?
