Evolution of the Soul

My life has traveled down many a path
Some that were planned and some others were not
Stories to tell and stories I was told
Part of the evolution of the soul

Teaching and learning, trying diff’rent things
Alpacas, bees, boiling sap from the trees
Many places to call home, no regrets
Part of the evolution of the soul

Apartments, houses and now in a yurt
Tent camping, a pop-up, now a teardrop
No matter the mode it’s who you are with
Part of the evolution of the soul

A partner, my wife, in this life journey
Each part of the story, better with her
Cherish what has been with much more to come
Part of the evolution of the soul

Some think I am crazy, with wanderlust
I have been blessed with stories of many
Enriched by their tales, my heart has been touched
Part of the evolution of the soul

If I have any wisdom I could share
Take risks and hear the story of others
Remember all of this journey is just
Part of the evolution of the soul

Matters of the Heart

Those occasions that reach down and touch your soul
Like a song that brings the tears to your eyes
Goosebumps on your arms
These are the moments of the matters of the heart

The life stories of others that make you reflect
Dig deep into the journey past and present
Moved to make a difference
These are the moments at the heart of the matter

Getting lost in the wonders of your surroundings
Finding some peace in the midst of the chaos
Nature’s healing power
These are the moments of the matters of the heart

The touch of a grandchild as she rests in your lap
Her heart beating softly against your chest
Hand curled around your finger
These are moments at the heart of the matter

Sometimes we lose our focus with all life’s demands
Prioritizing all those things that aren’t -
At the heart of the matter
Or the matters of the heart

In the mood to share some poetry tonight - might be a few coming to your feed.

The Road

Twas a day that was longer than a week in my mind
Exhaustion and tension was all I could find
Some of it others and some self inflicted
It wasn't the day that I planned or I scripted

Then out on the road with the full moon ahead
The sunset behind me in bright pink and red
The music was blasting and singing along
I still was reminded to whom I belong

Some days seem to come at such a high cost
Where I think that my sanity has to be lost
Insecure and frustrated and plenty of doubt
Days such as these can pack quite a clout

Then out on the road with the full moon ahead
The sunset behind me in bright pink and red
The music was blasting and singing along
I still am reminded to whom I belong

Then the next morning with the full moon ahead
The sunrise behind me in bright pink and red
I wind my way through the snow covered trees
The road has a way to put my mind at ease

I know I already shared a song for today...but my, oh my...if this doesn't give you goosebumps and bring you to tears. This 16 yr. old has an amazing story and absolutely touches deep into your soul with her voice. I have always dreamed of singing with an orchestra but it could never be this powerful.

Forgot to drop a song yesterday so will do two today. First one is here. Day #3 of 30 days of songs that touched my heart or made me think on my travels this week.

Going to post one song a day for the next 30 days or so. The song I post is just one that hit the heart as I was listening to music each day. So here we go with Day 1 - Better Here by the Avett Brothers.

Had a conversation with a friend the other day about not finding that place that I/we fit in this society. It was a heartfelt conversation and while driving the days after, this poem started ruminating in my brain. I'm fine - please don't read more into it. This has been a lifelong question for me. The poem probably needs many more tweaks and edits but here it is so far.

The Fringe

Always wondered how I fit in
Feeling like I’m on the fringe
Never sure there’s a place for me
Awkwardly trying to connect
Realizing that I missed the mark

A few friends that I would call close
But mostly those that I just know
Not letting them see in very far
Afraid what they might see inside
If the door to my soul was open

Exhausted after social times
Trying so hard to make it work
I’ve never been part of the cool crowd
At least that’s how it feels to me
But on most days it doesn’t matter

Never part of the drinking crowd
Nor have I been drunk in my life
It seems so much revolves around it
A part of being the square peg
No desire to fit in the round hole

As I’ve aged it has mattered less
Learning to accept who I am
The warts, the quirks and the awkwardness
It’s all part of my DNA
I’m guessing we all can feel this way

So here I am out on the fringe
Just taking all that this life gives
Some days a need to be accepted
And unwilling to compromise
But most days just fine on my own

As I have delved more into my photography addiction I have discovered something that I need to bring into my life beyond photography. When I have my camera in my hand I see things differently. The many colors of the wasps and bumblebees suddenly become art not threat. Each distinct color and line is a thing of beauty. The dragonfly on the rock is a piece of art. The snake on the snow fence - art. Each day I wander the woods or property I see new things that suddenly, because of a camera, become art. The fungus on the tree, the vines of the forest, nests of of the squirrels, even the hated 12 striped gopher becomes a piece of art.

I'm thinking perhaps if we all walked around in life as though we had a camera in our hand we would see the beauty of all those around us no matter how different they may look or think. I think I'll work on seeing the art in all those around me.
