For those who don't know, I’m originally from Greenville, SC, about 30 minutes from the Western NC border and 60 miles from Asheville. Greenville is struggling, with homes destroyed and lives lost. Western NC, though, is in dire shape -- this is now the second deadliest hurricane disaster after Katrina.

Some background // I'll never forget meeting so many people who came to my high school after Katrina. Their trauma was palpable, and while I had no idea what they were going through, I saw their grief, their love for New Orleans, and their shattered worlds. They stuck together and most never returned to their original schools.

Years later, as I think about what’s happening in Western NC, I can’t help but think of the children whose lives will now be forever changed, just like my classmates back then.

Western NC needs our help now more than ever. The media coverage hasn’t done enough to show the scale of devastation, and I encourage everyone to take time to understand what this region is facing.

I’ve made donations to Happy Helicopters, a business from my hometown providing air deliveries of supplies to Western NC, where roads to Asheville are destroyed. They need baby supplies like diapers, bottles, and formula. You can donate here: https://bit.ly/47UmqtX

The Red Cross is another great way to help or seek assistance. Link here: https://bit.ly/3ZP9TpZ

Finally, if you’re a small business impacted by the storm, please reach out to me at [email protected]. If you need help getting any messaging out, I’m here to assist you for free—whether it’s just letting people know how they can help, or sharing that you’re OK (or not OK).

Many of my clients and partners are going through so much right now, and my business has been trying to do whatever we can to alleviate any stress or help get social media messaging out right now.

To my network: Please don’t forget Western NC, and especially don’t forget the children.

Sending love to those who need it most.

To all those in Greenville, Upstate South Carolina, and the Western North Carolina mountains, my heart is with you. From Florida to the Carolinas to Georgia to Tennessee, it is stunning to see the damage that Helene caused. The stories, photos, and videos keep coming, and they continue to leave me speechless.

The street I grew up on looks like something out of a movie.

I can't imagine the road ahead -- I am sure it'll be long and hard. This I know though: the Carolinas have some of the finest people I've ever met. It's where true Southern hospitality is alive and well, and I know that the very same Southern hospitality of taking care of one another will carry you all through.

Thinking of all my family, friends, clients, and partners back home.

"In My Mind, I'm Gone to Carolina..."

Here are some resources for how to help: https://bit.ly/3ZKrU8J. Please consider any donation, even if small.

Keeping all those in the path of Hurricane (Now Tropical Storm) Helena in my thoughts. What a scary time -- this storm is very real. I am originally from Greenville, SC, which is getting hit hard at the moment, and we have many clients in GA, SC & NC, and we are hoping you all and your clients are safe.

If you are a small business, navigating social media during a potential crisis -- and a weather crisis like Helena -- can be tricky. Please take a moment to read if you are wondering if/when you should say something.

The key is knowing *when* to hit pause and when to lean in.

If your business could be directly impacted by this storm, prioritize safety updates for your team and customers over any regular posts. If you have clients needing something, note the ways they can possibly get in touch (if it's safe), but then go back to safety and empathy.

Focus on providing useful information, like closures, safety precautions, or ways to help the community.

Our BIG tip? Avoid anything that feels too promotional -- it can come across as tone-deaf.

Once things stabilize and calm down, you can shift to offering recovery resources and supporting your community, or you can go back to regular-scheduled programming.

As someone who has worked with Fortune 500s through major crises, the biggest lesson I learned is this: be empathetic, transparent, and timely.

Keyword: empathetic (and sometimes, that can just mean not posting -- and taking a step back).

Stay safe out there -- Jillian

(P.S. SWIPE for a previous client example of Hurricane communication as an example -- I am happy to help with any language any business in the storm's path may need today.)

Last night, I saw Mamma Mia! at the The Kennedy Center, and I can’t stop thinking about it. Yes, I am the total target audience for this play. And no, I don't care. And yes, I'm still humming Dancing Queen in my head this morning. The energy, the music, the way the entire audience was on their feet by the end -- it was pure joy.

This got me thinking. How can we replicate those feelings of excitement and connection and joy not just me, but every single person in that theater felt, in the content we create for our clients?

Sometimes I feel as if digital content can be so icky anymore. We get so caught up in chasing strong "data-driven strategies." Chasing higher reach, higher impressions, higher engagements, a strong CTR. Sure, it's important, but it's such a rat race.

What if we instead chased *human emotion*? Emotional storytelling and resonating with others. Creating content that sparks joy. That is meaningful. That is helpful.

Just like Mamma Mia! knows how to hit all the right notes with its audience, our content should do the same.

Imagine your content pillars as the show’s greatest hits -- each piece should be designed to evoke a strong emotional response, build anticipation, and keep your audience coming back for more. When content entertains, resonates, and sparks conversation, it goes beyond marketing; it creates a loyal COMMUNITY and promotes authenticity.

The challenge is understanding what triggers that dopamine rush for your audience. What makes them smile? What keeps them engaged? When we tap into those emotions, we build not just brand awareness but loyalty, trust, and enthusiasm.

It’s about crafting an experience that people can’t stop thinking about, just like I can’t stop thinking about Mamma Mia!

If you're a marketer, I challenge you to create content that entertains, informs, inspires and/or educates. If you build a carefully crafted strategy that speaks to your 3-5 target audiences, the people WILL come!

Maybe that will make social media a little happier and a little less "icky."

: Let's talk about core values and leadership.

Many companies today spend millions on campaigns promoting their culture, their values, and their vision. Fancy brand identities and manifestos. Large-scale marketing roadmaps. Leadership summits. But what matters? Core values put into practice.

While I'm no Fortune 500 CEO, I am a leader of my on-purpose small yet successful business of five years. And having worked closely with influential leaders and CEOs while in crisis, in the news, and looking to broaden their thought-leadership for a decade now, here are my thoughts regarding values + leadership.

1. Resilience is key. Life and business are full of unexpected turns. It’s not about avoiding challenges but facing them head-on and bouncing back stronger.

2. Value-driven leadership. Leadership isn’t about titles and strategic campaigns; it’s about living your values every. single. day. Integrity, respect, and service aren’t just buzzwords -- they’re the foundation of a thriving business and community it fosters.

3. Empathy matters. Whether dealing with clients or employees, showing empathy can transform relationships. Navigating change with grace and empathy has been crucial in building a supportive and loyal team. From Harvard Business Review: "...In 2021 Ernst & Young surveyed more than 1,000 workers who had left their jobs during the Great Resignation and found that 58% cited a lack of empathy from their managers as a central cause of their departure. Increasingly employees, especially Millennials and Gen Zers, don’t merely hope for empathy from their leaders—they demand it."

4. Communication is becoming a lost art. As a Communication major at Clemson University, I learned the power of clear and consistent communication. It fosters trust and ensures everyone is aligned with the company’s mission. In our remote-work, digital-driven world, this is more important than ever.

5. Hard work pays off. Period. It takes dedication, perseverance, and a relentless work ethic to grow the way you want. When your work is built on strong values and a commitment to excellence, the reward is significant.

With 13 total years of experience in social media, marketing, PR, and communications, I’m passionate about values that aren’t just preached but practiced daily.

I hope more companies, especially larger ones, embody the principles they promote. Here’s to building businesses where values are put into practice by its leadership.

Let me know: is there a company out there doing this REALLY well? I'd love to know so I can learn from them!

Let’s start from the beginning...⬇️

There was always a tiny whisper that told me to just go for it and do the thing...to start the business that would fill a gap for those in real estate and construction. To do more of the work I was passionate about. To hone in more on content marketing. To be a business owner.

I was going to provide social media and marketing services to businesses who wanted someone with a decade of in-house and agency social media and branding experience, but who couldn't afford a large agency price tag.

I started this business with very little -- no office, a small budget, but with big goals and a big fire in my eyes.

And that first step led me down a winding path full of twists, turns, long nights, early mornings, and moments where I sometimes wondered if it would all be worth it.

When I started my business planning in January 2020, I filed for my LLC/EIN, worked countless late nights after my job on branding, copy, business strategy, pricing, pitching my services, and so much more. I then gave my notice to my incredible employer (who is still a client now!), and then bam, Covid happened.

I thought I had made a huge mistake. But somehow, the Pandemic put me into the sink-or-swim mentality. And I decided I would swim.

I would network nonstop.
I would pitch myself to podcasts and trade journals to talk all things social media and marketing in Covid-times.
I would work late nights and early mornings and weekends.
I would do whatever it took to succeed.

March has marked 4 years in business, and I am proud of this business I’ve built, but there’s no way I could have done it alone. Now I am living out my dream and doing what I love, and I am hopeful for some big plans for my business plan and my five-year plan.

If you’re in the thick of it and watching the people around you show off their happy business stories, remember that their journey started in a small way. And it's not as easy as it looks. But it's worth it. Remember to search for the fire inside of you and to do what you love.

Where are you in your business journey? My messages are always open if you want to talk.

Sharing some things I'm *loving* in my personal life & at Sobeck Studio lately! Happy Valentine's Day, everyone!! 💕

1. Seeing our four new 2024 clients thrive, and delivering their first reports last week with all of them seeing exponential growth with their reach & and engagements, while seeing our other 10 clients (with half of them being with us for almost FOUR amazing years now!) thrive and embrace new trends and social platforms

2. Listening to more business podcasts & following new social media friends on socials that make me feel less alone + smarter as a small business owner

3. Coming up with new marketing ideas for clients that feel attainable and affordable, but also hit the nail on the head with their brand values and the vibe + goals they're going for

4. Saying yes to new ideas and opportunities in my business that may feel scary, but are moving me toward growth

5. Saying no to things that no longer serve me or my business

6. Watching my clients see real conversions from their business. I love hearing they're getting phone calls about posts, seeing DMs come in for business requests, and telling me about the people coming up to them saying "I'm loving your socials lately."

7. Working smarter in 2024, and time blocking to better prioritize my health + mental health

8. Watching the amazing contractors I have grow and thrive with our clients -- thankful for them!

9. Last, embracing the good days, but also embracing the hard days as a working mom of a very active toddler. Constant toddler germs, toddler tantrums, and a home that feels never quite clean anymore can be tough for this Ennegream 3 girlie, but I also have been finding the beauty in the Duplo toys all around the floor, the crazy bedtime struggle (but then the snuggles and "I love you mommy's" I hear afterward, the dirty dishes where he was so excited to see a dinner he finally enjoys, and overall, just watching my 2.5-year-old son grow up. Life is such a gift.

Thankful for the love around me, and thankful that at age 34, I really know who I am -- and I'm thankful for that.
