Submissions are open for the 2022 Multicultural Film Festival.
The Multicultural Film Festival, a collaboration of the Victorian Multicultural Commission and Swinburne University, will premier in August 2022, at ACMI Cinemas where shortlisted films will be screened, and winners announced.
We are looking for creative, original, non-formulaic short films about any aspect of cultural diversity and living in multicultural Australia to screen as part of the festival. Submissions are open to all ages and entry is free.
Prizes include industry sessions with SBS, and all shortlisted and winning films will be hosted on SBS on demand.
Submissions close on 20 June. Get in early!

Submissions are open for the 2022 Multicultural Film Festival.

Our featured filmmaker is Jessica Li.

Jessica Li works extensively behind the camera, garnering credits in a myriad of departments while being most devoted to writing/directing, acting, casting, performance coaching and assistant directing.

Mother Tongue, the 2020 short film she wrote and directed is currently circulating festivals, having shown at the BAFTA-qualifying 2020 Aesthetica Short Film Festival, and winning Critic’s Choice, Programmer’s Choice, and Best Next Gen Film at the 2021 Melbourne Women in Film Festival and more. Her most notable acting work includes her portrayal of Ingrid in Flunk, the ongoing web-series directed by Ric Forster. Flunk received Screen Australia and Film Victoria funding for its 3rd season, and has amassed more than 5 million views per episode and over 200,000 online subscribers.

Mother Tongue tells the story of 17-year-old Jane, who begins to embrace her background and rekindle her relationship with her mother when she becomes immersed in Chinese culture at her younger sister’s new language school.

Our featured filmmaker is Rachel Chen.

Rachel is currently completing her honours year of the Bachelor of Film and Television degree at Swinburne University. A first generation Australian, and Australian Born Chinese, Rachel discovered her future was in film and television in year 9, while studying media as an elective.

Rachel is an emerging Australian producer and hopes to be working in film producing in the near future. Her previous works include the experimental short film Aesthetic is for Losers (2018) which screened at the Mobile Innovation Network and Association (MINA) film festival, her short documentary Without Water (2019) which screened at the Environment Film Festival Australia (EFFA) as well as the short film, One, Two (2019) which screened and won the Encouragement Award at the Victorian Multicultural Film Festival and also screened on SBS On Demand. Passionate about inclusive storytelling and collaboration, Rachel is excited to contribute toward helping increase the number of multicultural opportunities in the Australian film and television industry.

One, Two is an award winning short drama film which centres around the protagonist Maddy, a shy and introverted first generation migrant who wants to pursue her passion for AFL. (2019)
