12/10/2021

All 35 mosques in the German city of Cologne will now be permitted to broadcast the call to prayer on Fridays.

The two-year initiative comes after an agreement between the city of Cologne and the Muslim community.

It includes Germany’s largest mosque, Cologne Central Mosque, which was opened in 2018 and has been a flashpoint for anti-Muslim sentiment from far-right parties.

Mosques seeking to broadcast the call will need to comply with limits on the volume of their loudspeakers, and notify neighbours in advance.

Mayor Henriette Reker has tweeted saying “Permitting the call of the muezzin is a sign of respect”.

Around 4.5 million Muslims live in Germany, the largest religious minority group.
