This never feels any less crazy when I think about it, but four years ago I got drunk and thought it would be a good idea to become a publisher, 34 individual collections, 3 anthologies, 28 authors, and so much planned for the year ahead. To everyone who has submitted a manuscript, poem for an anthology, bought a book, contributed artwork, thank you.

This book is the first that we have released to be named after a place. Dark Peaks, after the area in the Peak District where she lives, and weaves its inspiration from. The pieces which weave her storytelling with moments of her life and trauma, each a condensed version of an emotion. Hannah collects herself into four states of emotions, showing that there is always light to be found in the depths of the forest of both the mind, and life.

Rhys is one of those people who I love to work with, no matter how heavy the subjects he wants to discuss. So when I got the call back in April I knew something was brewing. The book found its inception in the dark moment of a friend dying; his words feel like solace to himself and his fallen brothers family, while his guests present their own perspective on the world and situation. The words classic or masterpiece get flippantly used because people don’t wish to be late to lauding praise, but the truth is that finding home is about beginning again, and most importantly it is healthy.

The initial schedule for 2025 had this book set for release in June or July, and then the usual madness of poets dropping out and missing hand in deadlines, and here we are. None of that is really relevant to the storytelling weaved into the pages, stories that may seem arcane at first glance, once you look past the Irish language and understand the metaphors which twist and lock themselves into place, along with her honest confessions in regards to life and starting again after a near death experience, Icarus Isn’t Dead is a book that serves as a spirit guide to help navigate through the world of theatre.

Words take shape is more than a figurative statement, so much more than what you might think. The concept of writing in such an ergodic manner where the words and titles intertwine together, as seen in the cover, how everything seemingly falls into its place in a very organic fashion. Ashley has been able to breakdown poetry to a singular point, before reconstructing it in a manner that she deems to be more interesting and introspective than it ever was before; originally that was to her, but you’ll realise it was for us all.

Since 2023 we have always released two female poets during the month of March as it’s women’s month, and the 8th is international women’s day. So we are showcasing our incredible female poets. An exhibition of respect and love to the writers, and artists who influence us every day.

I think it was easter last year when I got the initial message from Giselle, asking me what spaces there were available for this year. At the time it was relatively clear, but it’s Giselle, the woman who had 5 poems in the first anthology, and this is the sixth book that she has been a part of, even if the list had been full, things would have been moved around to accommodate her, she has been here since the start. This collection is laced with references to the late great David Lynch, and his incredible series Twin Peaks, Laura Palmer is found throughout the pages; the imagery that is meticulously shown in her verses reminding me of both Lynch and Malick. The scenes that dive into her traumas, life, and world she experiences, and reads about. Giselle has and always will be someone who thinks with such depth about what she wants to say, and how it should be presented, she is a generational auteur, we just get to read the screenplay.
With that said

Firstly, this is a book that has a tedious link between multiple poets across different continents, without Giselle, would Steph have been published? Without Steph, would Katherinne have been published? Also, without Steph would we be here for the first of two releases with Jordan this year? But it wasn’t originally supposed to be like this. Flat Front was sent to me as a colossal idea, which in time, formed into two books; this being the first. A highly personal book, which explores her sexuality, and just how she looks at both herself and the world she occupies. A book which has the ability to more of a state of mind, or movement, so those who submerge themselves in are living it. Question remains, are you ready for a Flat Front 2025?

With this year not having an anthology, partly because the books coming out this year are absolutely fu***ng awesome, and partly because the last didn’t really get any submissions. But for the year ahead I’d like to say that we’re taking submissions for an anthology on the ocean, we have asked our wonderful friend Andrea Henderson to provide us with the cover, and as always all the money made will be donated to an ocean conservation charity which we will decide on after research. But as always a maximum of 5 poems, email to the usual email address [email protected] and don’t forget to share and submit.

With another year done at Dark Thirty we can now step back and appreciate the 12 books that we’ve released throughout 2024. From Ashley and Rheign, to Katherinne and Bethan; and the incredible work which fills the pages of Forgotten Fragments Of Time. The plan was always simple, books shouldn’t feel like you’ve read them before; and thirty books in I would like to believe that I’m very much sticking to the ideals that I started with.

The real questions now.
Who had the best book? The best cover? Your favourite individual poem? What were the lines that became stuck in your head for days? Are you excited for what the future brings?

Have an amazing festive period, and we can’t wait to share the incredible work we have planned for 2025.
