On any given day, I open up my Canva and see Heather's posts that my team has created. Today was no different; I opened Canva this morning and had one of her reels open from an edit that I made earlier in the week. I didn't expect to receive news that Heather is no longer with us.

The online space is strange and beautiful at the same time. As an online business owner, I've become very attached to people I've never met in "real" life or that I've only met once or twice. I've been in a networking group with people I now consider friends, I work with people who are also building online business, I have team members and clients all over the country.

Heather was a strong woman who wore many hats. If you had the pleasure of knowing her, you know how much she loved her family, her clients, working on her health, and a good adventure. When we were creating her content, these were things we focused on. She was a badass.

This quote was from a post of hers on January 24th and I think she's right - we set high expectations for our future selves in this way when some days, we need to focus more on the current day, facing its challenges and realities.

To those closest to her, my heart is with you. I never had the pleasure of meeting Heather in person, but I know she will be deeply missed.

I ended a client relationship a couple of months ago. There wasn't anything "wrong", but it felt out of alignment. I was feeling a need to be available all of the time again (a boundary I work hard on) and was tied to the computer for projects that took hours at a time. I stopped going to the gym and noticed a slight uptick in wine consumption and was often working much later into the evening than I prefer.

I never make business decisions lightly, especially when it impacts things financially, but I am learning to lean into these moments sooner and taking action quicker. So many lessons in entrepreneurship. ☺

If you are trying to grow your business, I'd offer a few pieces of advice.

1. You don't have to work with anyone and everyone. It feels that way in the beginning. It's survival - how many hours are needed to work at what hourly rate in order to "make it." But pay attention to how you're feeling because taking on a client that doesn't feel right may keep you from having the energy for the one who would have been perfect.

2. Be very specific about what you want to offer. When I started my business, I offered ALL. THE. THINGS. And truly, most of my initial clients wanted the services that I absolutely hate doing (i.e. grant writing). While I'm incredibly grateful for those clients because they gave me the confidence to get started, I was completely burned out before I realized that I hated a good portion of the services I was offering.

3. Balance work with your personal life. I still struggle with this because my business is my baby. I want to nurture it and grow it and it's hard to turn it off. But we need to. Find things you enjoy so that when you're "off the clock," you are truly not thinking about work. I've been spending hours at the gym or sitting in the sauna and I've read so many books lately! When I do get back on my computer or catch up on texts, I don't feel so overwhelmed. I come back to things refreshed and with a clear head, which makes things better for everyone.

If you're looking for help growing your business or want to chat through a client situation, don't hesitate to reach out. 💕

Type A, perfectionist, Enneagram 3, ESTJ… all the labels that lend handily to the fact that I seek validation from achievement.

And yet, until I was in my 30s, I had no confidence in myself. I blended in, let myself get passed up for opportunities and generally didn’t rock the boat in my relationships.

Enter 2020. I stopped caring about rules. I started getting really oppositional. That rebellious nature people generally get in their earlier years? Yeah, I got that. Everything became an argument because I no longer kept my opinions to myself. I know it irritated a lot of people, but when I look back on that, I am proud of myself for starting to actually have a backbone and stick up for my own individual thoughts and beliefs.

But you know what else that year gave me? Confidence. A voice. And a tenacity to make my own rules because if I didn’t like something, I wanted the freedom to speak my mind without the fear of repercussions from jackass sitting in a high rise office that knew nothing about me or what I did for a job. 🙂

So flash forward a few years and here I am, sitting on a balcony overlooking the ocean waves in Panama City Beach, asking “where to next?” and fully embracing the laptop lifestyle. I check in with clients, work on projects and get sh*t done, but I may take a walk on the beach between calls or head to the beach in the afternoon, shifting work to the evening so I can get the most time outside.

Where do you see yourself in the next 3-5 years? If you're being called to paint, maybe it's time to listen.

🚨 Out of Office 🚨

Since I started my business, I haven’t taken a day off. Not one. Even on days I’ve said I’m off, I am usually on email and in text messages or Voxer.

It doesn’t turn off. I’m not complaining, it’s just the reality of being a business owner.

Until today. Today, I’m taking an actual full day off. (But that’s not actually true because I was in email and worked on some things this morning. 😜 I added this after I had already written this post.)

Regardless, I planned it, my team has things handled and anything that needs my attention will wait until tomorrow. But we’re planning on that being a short day, too. 💁🏻‍♀️

When you’re running a business, you’re accountable to all the things, which makes it really hard to ever truly take time away. But you need it. You need to turn off the notifications, protect your brain power and enjoy life.

So if you need me today, don’t. But if you really do, [email protected] has you covered.

I think one of the hardest lessons I learned in 2023 is how uncomfortable it can get when you’re trying to protect your peace and your boundaries. You’ll be ignored, you’ll be talked about, very few will understand it. You may have to break some traditions, maybe even some habits and you’ll find that you reach for those at times when it feels lonely or “because it’s what we’ve always done.”

You’ll find yourself in a smaller circle.

And may have to work through some unpleasant emotions. Some even more unpleasant conversations.

But then you’ll emerge from the other side, focused on your goals, that small group of people and it’ll be a blip on the radar.

Cheers to anyone emerging from a hard season. I never say “this is going to be my/our year,” but this is going to be my/our year. ✌🏼

Not perfection, not intensity, just some good ol’ consistency.

This time next year, you’ll be patting yourself on the back for taking consistent action. Let it be messy or weird or even a little over the top, but don’t stop.

I spoke to the local CEO group this morning. This was the third time, I think, that I was invited to present to this group. It’s one of my favorite things to do (minus that 7:30 a.m. start time 😴).

One reason I love it is because teenagers ask hard questions. And when I leave, I always have a mental list of all of the things I want to improve in my business so that next year when I speak to the class, I am a little bit better than the year before.

More to come on this. After a 12-hour day, doing some reflecting and feeling incredibly grateful. 💕

Last week I felt like a million bucks. It was gorgeous outside, I was hiring new teammates and was finally getting ideas out that I’ve been holding in for a year.

This week, I’m cold and feel like the second photo (swipe to see).

Not every day is the best day. Some weeks it’s harder to stay focused. Sometimes s**t just happens and the most important thing we can do is feel, and then move forward.

I knew this week would be tough once the family went home and the reality of losing someone I love dearly became reality. So, present day Jayme is so proud of past Jayme, because during one of my crazy moments of clarity at the end of last week, I made a list. (I know, shocking.) But this list was strategic - it’s on my desk in clear view and has things I’m grateful for and the goals that are extremely important to me over the next few months.

Simple, but effective.

Today, when that scarcity mindset started to creep back in, I added to the gratitude list. My confidence was boosted afterward and I continued on with what I was working on.

Quit over complicating things. Express gratitude. Feel but don’t live in those feelings for too long. Remember the happy moments. Tell people you love them.

Some Wednesday wisdom for you. It’s been a hell of a past week. ❤️

This past week, I did three things that were… weird? Weird isn’t really the word I’m looking for, but they were three things I never thought I’d do. And not undo, if that makes sense.

👉🏼I deleted Snapchat from my phone.
👉🏼I unsubscribed from almost every single email newsletter I receive (which took place over multiple days due to the email list’s schedule).
👉🏼I deleted or hid people from my Facebook feed that generally provoke me in some way (negatively).

And tonight, in one of the emails I did not unsubscribe to, I saw this quote. And it hit me.

Im entering a season of no time for BS. As said in her email, “I’m unsubscribing from any and all bulls**t.”

If you feel like you needed this today, too, we’ll consider permission granted. LFG.

It's hard for me to sit still. I mean that in both a daily sense and a long-term sense. My brain is constant and it's taken a lot of work and practice to quiet that and really learn to be present.

At one point in time, I was working a 9-5, teaching 5-6 group fitness classes per week, running a couple of side hustles and trying to keep our household running, see family/friends, you know - all the things. The more I had in my planner, the better.

Eventually, of course, something had to give.

When it comes to work, a project or painting my living room blue while my husband is gone for two days, I get laser focused and can always knock out a list of what needs to be done.

Walking away from it is the hard part.

I started using a time-blocking system a few months ago and love it. It's really helped with setting boundaries but also with making sure I'm taking time to myself or closing my laptop. My phone is even sync'ed to go to DND when it's my "me" time on the calendar. That laser focus still happens, but has to be within its designated "block." I use a second calendar in Google that overlaps mine and visually helps when I'm designating time for projects, client calls or personal things like lunch and going to the gym.

And now, I'm teaching time blocking to other people and it's a fun process! So many people don't realize how much time is being wasted bouncing around from task to task or client to client without intentional thought.

Do you use time blocking? Let me know if you'd like to learn more!

I was affiliated with health-related network marketing company about 7 years ago when I experienced my first troll. When I started in network marketing, my social media profiles were set to private and I rarely posted other than some family or friend photos here and there.

I started putting myself out there to develop a brand and in one post, I had shared some delicious Filipino food that my mother-in-law made. If I remember correctly, the purpose of the post was that you can take care of your health while still indulging at times. And I wasn't one to pass up the pancit or the Lumpia (IYKYK)...

Out of nowhere, someone started calling me names in the comments, stating that I was a liar and a fake and all sorts of other negative things. Since I'd never had that happen before, my feelings were hurt and I felt the need to respond. I spent far too much time formulating a response and after I posted it, more negativity ensued. I ended up deleting the entire post.

What I should have thought about was that those comments were getting my post more views because of the interaction and that I could have hidden the comments, blocked and then let it go.

Unfortunately, I have a tendency to shut down completely when I experience this. But I'm working on it!

I read an email yesterday from someone I've followed for years and completely adore, and two things stuck out to me. She said,

"It is all my life. It is all my brand. It is all my truth."

And -

"People can't pay you if they don't know about you."

As a business owner, my personal life and business life are intertwined. I like it that way. I work when it feels good (or when things need to be done that only I can do) and I prepare my team to keep things moving when I need time away. Sometimes that means I work 7 days in a week and sometimes it's 3 or 4. And I share that because there's no clear distinction between the two... And if I'm not showing up to talk about the business, who is?

So the same goes for you. Create content and share it. Or hire someone to do it for you. But show up. Because the world deserves what you have to offer and there's no one who does what you do the way you do it. 😘

When I walked out of PiYo in mid-March 2022, I didn’t know it was going to be my last class. And I really didn’t know that I would have such a hard time ever stepping back in the gym afterward.

I started going through some health “stuff” in late summer 2021 and it was so frustrating to have to eventually just stop everything I had done for so long and formed such an identity around. I was so worn out and so unhealthy.

But today, I went back to the gym. And it was amazing. I was in such a zone for over an hour and I remembered what I used to be capable of. I may not get all of the way back to that, but I’m not even sure I want to.

I have such an addictive personality (if you’ve been here a while, you may remember the 😳) so I really want to pay attention to what feels good rather than go crazy trying to look a certain way, run a certain number of miles or beat a specific pace. I think that’s been a lesson for me in so many areas of life - work, relationships, fitness - there’s no such thing as perfect and always trying for that just leads to bad feelings, burnout or even injuries and health issues.

Today was a great day.

I made my first hire right at one year of being full time in my business and it was the best decision I’ve made. Now, my mighty team of 4 makes me so happy - they’re killing it!

If you’ve been thinking you need help but aren’t sure where to start, how to train, what to delegate, let’s start with finding those things that take you too much time or that you really don’t enjoy. What exactly is a virtual assistant? 🤔

When I was trying to figure out what I wanted my business to be and what I wanted to do, virtual assistant kept popping up for me. I watched Tiktok videos and Instagram reels about VAs for about a year before I ended up leaving my 9-5.

Initially, it was hard to really grasp exactly what a VA does - there were so many options…

I finally realized that it could really be whatever I wanted it to be but the gist of it was that a virtual assistant is a contract worker who completes tasks for a client or clients.

Simple.

And it’s work that can be done from anywhere. Jackpot.

I made a list of all of the services that I thought I could offer as a VA - I included anything I thought I could do (and not necessarily do the best). I tried not to overthink it; if it was a skill I had or a task I thought I could complete, I included it.

I still have that list, but it has a lot of services crossed off that I’m no longer interested in doing. It takes some trial and error, but I can now confidently offer a smaller list of services that I feel really confident I can do well.

If you’ve been thinking about becoming a virtual assistant but aren’t sure where to start, I’d love to help. Comment below or send me a DM!

I know what you’re thinking. If I had time, I could: accomplish X-Y-Z, travel more, spend more time with my family, be more prepared for meetings, etc. I wouldn’t be so stressed. I could enjoy things more.

You’re right.

But you’re also probably wasting more time than you realize.

I know this about myself. When my routine is out of whack, when my boundaries get lackadaisical, when I know something needs done that I don’t really want to do - time is the first thing I start wasting.

Priorities are so important and one thing I like to do with my clients is determine what the top priorities are and how I can help manage time in the back end of their business. Sometimes that means blocking one day per week on someone’s calendar so nothing gets scheduled. Sometimes it’s not responding to emails on a weekend or editing an auto reply response so that a person doesn’t feel tied to the computer 24/7. Other times it’s as simple as setting up a project management board where one didn’t exist.

I find that these are things my clients are perfectly capable of doing, but they put it off because it’s not a priority and because it’s not something they want to do or enjoy doing.

Hi, I do enjoy that. 🙋🏻‍♀️ And my team? Well, organization is kind of our thing.

So if you’ve been thinking you need some help but aren’t sure what or how to delegate, set up some time with me to chat. I’d love to help or if my team isn’t a good fit, I’d be happy to share your info with another person in my network.

Link in my bio. 😉 Can’t wait to talk to you soon.

I only pulled one affirmation card this week. And a huge thanks to Glitter and Gravitas for even getting me to do that on our networking call Tuesday. It’s a habit I haven’t yet remastered.

But I thought about that card all week - it said: Everything I do today creates a better tomorrow.

So through the frustrations with programs crashing, growing pains of learning new clients and their branding/processes, training Looms, creating content, late nights on my laptop - I just kept thinking that this is all getting me to where I want to be, it’s not my forever reality.

I think we all need that reminder sometimes. Stay focused on your goals, try to work through the discomfort and the reward will be a better tomorrow. Organizing chaos is not something that brings me joy while I’m in it, but the efficiency on the other side is, well, that’s my jam.

And pic is of Henry and I on vacation last week, when I wasn’t freezing, it wasn’t raining and I had showered. And brushed my teeth.

Kidding. Maybe. 🤣

Hi, my name is Jayme and I may obsess over the first day with a new client. Gotta make sure those Instagram posts are hitting the mark, ya know. 💁🏻‍♀️

I tend to obsess over providing value to my clients, especially in the early stages of working together. You can’t think of clients in a transactional way - I think that leads to sacrificing quality and keeps you from building a solid relationship. When we know who we are working with, we do better. We become invested in their success and the success of their business, which in return, helps the success of our own business.

How are you providing value to your client(s) today?

07/01/2023

My office is where I desire to be.

Sometimes it’s in the car with a dog in my lap. Sometimes it’s in a beach chair looking at the ocean. Sometimes it’s by a fireplace watching snow come down in buckets over Lake Tahoe. And, on what seems like a rare ocassion, it’s in my beautiful home office in Centralia. 🤣

I’ve been obsessed with being “anywhere but here” for years. But until I started my business, that wasn’t a real possibility. I had to build up PTO or vacation time and make sure my boss was okay with my time off. We lived in week increments, dreaming of a day when George would be retired and I could do things on my terms.

It’s surreal that we are here.

And the best part is that we travel together with our furry companions. I used to fly back and forth to Florida for work or take the Amtrak to Chicago at least once a month, missing Leyton’s senior night for basketball or a Christmas program for our girls. And missing GG and my puppies.

Now, we don’t miss anything because we shift our travel schedule to make it work.

Don’t get me wrong, I still work my ass off. But when I worked a 9-5, I may have worked hard that day or week, but my reward was to go home to decompress and do it again the next day. And money? Well, it’s a lot easier to give myself a raise.

Now, my reward may be to go to the beach for a couple of hours at lunchtime. Or to go for a hike by Lake Tahoe. The money continues to grow because I put in the effort. And my reputation keeps my client log full.

In a nutshell, the reward is still there but damn, the view. 😍

Simple.

I wasn’t going to choose a word for the year and I don’t do resolutions, but the word simple (simplify, simplistic, etc) keeps showing up like that My Pillow guy (seriously, those commercials 😳).

There’s so much stuff, so much turmoil and so much chaos sometimes that I think we lose sight on what makes us the happiest and brings the most peace. We bury ourselves in work to feel important or to avoid. We rationalize issues in relationships and continue to exert energy when they’re beyond repair. Or we obsess over perfection to a point that we burn out or drive those around us crazy.

It’s difficult. Complicated.

What if we focused on keeping things simple? Less of the world, more of the Lord. Less chaos, more peace. Less. Simple.

What’s your word for 2023?

15/11/2022

I worked for a nonprofit for 11 years. I worked in a few roles throughout that time but I was always good at building relationships with our donors and our kids. It was enjoyable and I was comfortable.

Until it wasn’t. And until I wasn’t. I knew I had to make a big change.

Over the past year, I’ve had a lot of those “I think I’m going to throw up” moments. But I promised myself that I wouldn’t let fear dictate my decisions anymore. And if I was feeling fear that I was probably doing something that was right and that could be amazing.

What a year it’s been!

If you’re looking for a sign, this is it. Start now. Start before you’re ready. The only regret you’ll have is that you didn’t start sooner. Whatever “it” is!

Don’t let fear win. Use it to move.

Share this with someone who needs a push today! ❤️
