The UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) has allocated £85 million (around $103 million) to the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) Central Laser Facility (CLF) for the development of the world’s most powerful laser.

The investment will fund a substantial upgrade to the CLF, including the creation of the “Vulcan 20-20 laser.”

However, the planned “Vulcan 20-20" laser’s upgrade will be 100 times brighter than the existing “Vulcan” and a million billion billion times brighter than the brightest sunlight in the Sahara Desert.

The project is expected to take six years and will create numerous jobs in science and engineering

NASA is planning to construct houses on the moon using 3D printing technology, according to a New York Times report.

The space agency aims to establish a lunar presence with structures built by a 3D printer that will use moon rock chips and mineral fragments to make concrete for the construction.

NASA’s director of technology maturation, Niki Werkheiser, expressed confidence in achieving this goal through partnerships with universities and private companies.

The 3D printer is undergoing testing, with plans to send it to the moon in February 2024 as part of NASA’s Artemis program, which aims to return humans to the lunar surface.

8 lessons from the book The Next Right Thing: A Simple, Soulful Practice for Making Life Decisions by Emily P. Freeman:

1. Life is full of decisions. We make decisions every day, from big things like where to live and what career to pursue, to small things like what to eat for breakfast and what to wear.

2. Making decisions can be difficult. Sometimes we have to choose between two good options, or we have to make a decision without all the information we need. This can be stressful and overwhelming.

3. It's okay to not know what to do. It's normal to feel lost and confused when we're making a big decision. It's important to be patient and to trust that we will find the right answer.

4. The next right thing is the best thing we can do right now. It doesn't have to be the perfect thing or the final thing. It just needs to be the best thing we can do in this moment.

5. We can always make a different decision later. If we make a decision and then realize it wasn't the right one, we can always change our mind. It's important to remember that we are not stuck with our decisions.

6. We don't have to make decisions alone. We can always ask for help and advice from our loved ones, our mentors, or our community.

7. Making decisions is a spiritual practice. When we make decisions, we are connecting with our values and our purpose. We are also trusting that God is guiding us in the right direction.

8. The most important thing is to take action. Once we have made a decision, it's important to take action. Even if the action is small, it shows that we are committed to our decision.

These are just a few of the many lessons that Emily P. Freeman shares in her book The Next Right Thing. If you are looking for a book that can help you to make better decisions, I highly recommend reading this one. It is a wise and compassionate book that can help you to navigate the challenges of decision-making with peace and confidence.

17/12/2022

Wages are rising, but they're not keeping up with inflation. While pay negotiations may have resulted in wage increases in several sectors this year, overall increases will remain below the rise in consumer prices in many countries, as confirmed by data released by the OECD in its macroeconomic report.

The war in Ukraine has significantly increased prices, particularly for energy, adding to inflationary pressures at a time when the cost of living was already rising rapidly around the world.

As a result, global financial conditions have tightened substantially this year and the outlook for labor markets remains uncertain. In most OECD countries, average wage growth has been slower than inflation, reducing household purchasing power despite government measures to mitigate the impact of soaring food and energy prices.

As our infographic shows, Switzerland is for the time being one of the few economies analyzed that seems to have been spared. In the United States, the average decline in real wages for the entire population - across all sectors and income levels - was just over 2 percent year-on-year in the third quarter of 2022.

In Europe, Germany and Spain saw even more pronounced declines in purchasing power, with real incomes falling by just over 4 percent and 5 percent, respectively, nationwide. Several factors explain the differences between countries, such as differences in exposure to inflation, but also in social protection measures.

NEWS | As the year finally comes to a close, Spotify’s much-beloved series of ‘Wrapped’ personalized playlists is back. The Swedish audio streaming service has once more pulled together its annual round up of nostalgic and tailored collections of listeners’ top artists and songs, using an algorithm that ranks streams, either online or offline, that users have listened to for a minimum of 30 seconds.

At the same time, the company has revealed some of the industry’s latest insights based on its analytics such as the globe’s most streamed artists on Spotify (this year the Puerto Rican rapper, Bad Bunny) as well as the most streamed song (championed by Harry Styles with “As It Was.”)

Looking at data from Statista’s Global Consumer Survey, it’s clear that whatever Spotify is doing is working, as it has become a firm favorite of the media streaming giants for people living in the UK.

Out of around 1,500 UK respondents that had bought music from one of the 12 platforms included in the poll in the past 12 months, more than half said that they had purchased streaming services on Spotify. A

mazon Music was the second most popular choice, with 43 percent picking it. Popularity then tails off, with Apple Music used by around a third of respondents, while iTunes saw only 21 percent of respondents pay for it.

Battersea A Power Station was built between 1929 and 1935 and Battersea B Power Station, to its east, between 1937 and 1941, when construction was paused owing to the worsening effects of the Second World War. It is one of the world's largest brick buildings.

In 2012, administrators Ernst & Young entered into an exclusivity agreement with Malaysia's S P Setia and Sime Darby to develop the site to include 253 residential units, bars, restaurants, office space (occupied by Apple and No. 18 business members club), shops and entertainment spaces.

The plans were approved and redevelopment commenced a few years later. As of 2021, the building and the overall 42-acre (17 ha) site development is owned by a consortium of Malaysian investors.

The £9 billion (RM 48 billion) Battersea Power Station development is owned by a consortium of Malaysian investors comprised of SP Setia Bhd (40%), Sime Darby Property Bhd (40%) and the Employees’ Provident Fund (EPF) (20%, with the commercial assets within the Power Station building now being directly owned by Permodalan Nasional Bhd (PNB) and EPF.

This legendary London landmark and surrounding area has been brought back to life as one of the most exciting and innovative mixed use neighbourhoods in the world – a place for locals, tourists and residents to enjoy a unique blend of shops, bars, restaurants, entertainment venues, parks and historical spaces.

20/09/2022

Queen Elizabeth’s funeral has been forecast to pull in more than four billion viewers worldwide yesterday, breaking the record for the “most watched broadcast of all time”, according to media reports.

If industry experts' predictions are accurate, then the funeral will nearly double the UK’s previous most watched royal broadcast - the funeral of Diana, Princess of Wales in 1997 with a viewership of 2.5 billion people.

The UK royal family’s televised events have historically brought in huge audiences from the world over. Where William and Kate’s wedding saw 162 million people tune in worldwide in April 2011, Harry and Meghan’s saw an estimated 1.9 billion in 2018.

Music events such as the Live 8 charity concert of 2005, and sporting events including FIFA World Cup finals also bring in peak figures, with the most watched broadcast event in history reportedly the Atlanta Olympics opening ceremony of 1996, where U.S. boxing legend Muhammad Ali lit the torch to kick off the games.

The late queen’s funeral is also attracted some two million people to join the state funeral procession in person, including more than 70 heads of government. It will be the UK’s biggest ever security operation, with over 10,000 police personnel on duty.

Battling with your WIFI? Do you live in one of these lighter blue countries?

Iceland has been crowned as Europe’s broadband champion of 2022, according to an annual study by cable.co.uk, based on more than 200 million connection tests conducted across the continent.

Luxembourg, Liechtenstein, Andorra and France round up the top five, with average download speeds between 120 and 220 megabits per second.

The size of a country has an impact on its internet speed. For instance, countries like Luxembourg or Liechtenstein have the advantage of having to provide service over a smaller area to that of larger countries such as Germany or Italy.

With this in mind, France performed well in 2022 - even if the survey does not account for regional differences. Excluding countries with less than one million inhabitants, the French fixed internet network ranks third worldwide, behind only Taiwan and Japan.

At the lower end of the scale, Bosnia-Herzegovina and Albania are among the countries with the slowest internet speeds, where average download speeds can fall below 20 megabits per second.

NEWS | Space company ArianeGroup has secured funding to develop Europe’s first reusable and eco-friendly launchers, in a bid to compete with the likes of Elon Musk’s SpaceX, which pioneered the technology.

The group, best known for making the heavy-lift Ariane 5 and the future Ariane 6, said on Monday it had been selected to conduct the project, which will be funded by the European Commission as part of the Horizon Europe programme designed to encourage and accelerate innovation on the continent.

"For the first time, Europe will have access to a reusable launcher. In other words, we’ll have our own SpaceX, we’ll have our own Falcon 9,” French Economy Minister Bruno Le Maire said they would be operational by 2026.

According to a survey conducted by Statista as part of the Global Consumer Survey, soccer is by far the favorite sport in the UK, with 80 percent of British fans watching it.

Perhaps more surprisingly, boxing comes in second place, with a 29 percent share of sports fans, followed by cricket with 26 percent and only in fourth place rugby at 25 percent.

Of the approximately 4,124 sports fans surveyed in the UK, 25 percent said they follow professional tennis competitions, compared to 21 percent of motorsports.

American football also makes it into the top roundup, with 13 percent of UK sports fans following it, surpassing cycling, which saw only 12 percent.
