Shyne was a Brooklyn rapper who was discovered in 1998, by DJ Clark Kent, while freestyling in a barbershop. He was introduced to Sean Puffy Combs soon after and got signed on the spot.
1998 was the era of Puffy and Jlo, who were a hot couple at the time. Biggie Smalls had been murdered the previous year and Bad Boy was working on his posthumous album Born Again. Bad Boy had already begun building a formidable legacy and Puffy was at the height of his success as a music mogul.
Getting signed right away was pretty impressive. On top of this, Shyne was offered a huge signing bonus and perks beyond his wildest dreams. He was just a kid from Brooklyn, but he was born in Belize in 1978 and moved to New York when he was eight years old join with his mother, who had moved to the US earlier.
He was instantly hooked on the hip hop culture of the 80s and early 90s. He began developing his craft as a freestyler. Freestyling and rapping to anyone who would listen. And he just happened to be in the right place at the right time while in the barbershop.
Puffy was so impressed with Shyne, real name Jamal Michael Barrow, that he offered him a 5 album deal. He reportedly received three cars of his choice, two homes and even a few million dollars, just for signing.
What for more on Shyne and the tragic event that changed his life forever. Link in bio.

“I had one foot in hip hop being a DJ and the other foot in P-Funk. I was a self taught musician on Piano. Playing instruments was something you didn’t see in hip hop. And on top of that, I was a huge Prince fan. I loved that he did it all in the studio by himself.
I figured the more MC’s you would see… the less the fans would figure out that I was the piano man and Humpty Hump and Shock G.
At that time if you seemed like you knew a lot about playing music, you were considered less hip hip.”

Devante is the brains behind Jodeci. He is a writer and producer who once traveled to Minnesota to audition for Prince. He didn’t get to meet him but when he got home he formed the group Jodeci with his brother Dalvin, K-CI and Jojo. Jodeci’s debut single Forever My Lady was a huge success. The group became one of the most iconic groups in R&B. While producing Jodeci’s legendary albums, he began to work with other artists too. He not only produced for established artists, he wanted to find and raise up new talent.
Devante is behind discovering other legendary R&B artists. Missy Elliot and Timbaland to name a couple. While touring with Jodeci, he would hear auditions from local groups and select those he believed had the most talent and potential. Missy was in a girl group called Faze, which was becoming popular in her hometown. She got her group to dress up like female versions of Jodeci and positioned the group to cross paths with Devante, while Jodeci was in town. He was impressed and asked them to join what would go on to be his collective.
