A reminder of Cameroon's World Cup journey from España 1982 to Brasil 2014:
Cameroon's first World Cup participation was in 1982 in Spain where the nation exited in the group stage undefeated after drawing all 3 games.
In 1990, Cameroon became the first African country to reach the quarterfinals before being defeated 3-2 by England.
In 1994, Cameroon returned to the World Cup in USA and at the age of 42, Roger Milla became the oldest player to feature and score in the tournament. The Lions bowed out in the group phase with a single point registered against Sweden. In their 6-1 loss to Russia, Russian striker Salenko set a record for scoring 5 goals in a single World Cup game.
In 1998 in France, the Lions exited in the group stage following two draws against Austria and Chile, respectively, and a defeat to Italy.
In 2002 in Japan and Korea, Cameroon scored 4 points after drawing with Ireland and beating Saudi Arabia, but failed to make the knock-out phase due to a 2-0 defeat to eventual finalist Germany.
In 2010 in South Africa, the Indomitable Lions finished last in Group F with no point below Netherlands, Japan and Denmark, and were the first team to be knocked out of the tournament. Samuel Eto'o scored the Lions' only two goals.
In 2014, the Lions equally finished bottom of their group with no point, below hosts Brazil, Mexico and Croatia. Matip scored Cameroon's only goal in the tournament, in a 4-1 loss to Brazil.
The Indomitable Lions were absent in 2018 in Russia, and here they come again in Qatar, hoping to replicate, or improve on, the heroics of Italia '90.
