Children's book publishing is notoriously hard for emerging writers to break into.

That's why we are excited to announce an exciting initiative to support new writers with the Children's Publishing Academy's pitching competition. Offering an option for free entry and and a paid Assessed option, this competition connects aspiring authors with EK Books commissioning editors. Writers are invited to exercise their creativity to come up with a compelling pitch that makes publishers pay attention. Publication and development opportunities with EK Books, and a selection of free titles from our catalogue, are on the table for successful authors.

More details here

Entries close June 30.

The most touching stories always come from a place of authenticity and lived experience. In this article from Kids' Book Review, Jess Galatola, author of Some Families Change, shares how the big changes in her own family were the catalyst for her picture book, as she searched for a way to talk to her boys about what was happening.

Writing from the heart may come intuitively to most authors, particularly children’s authors, but I feel it’s never been more important to t...

Since you're seeing this, it's pretty obvious you already love books, but how would you like to get paid to share that love with others and spend your days in bookstores?

We're looking for a Sydney-based book worm to join our tight-knit team as a full-time Sales Representative for NSW. The successful applicant will take on the role of championing our award-winning and locally authored books, and selling them to our customers. This sales role offers a fair degree of autonomy and would suit someone who likes variety in their days and to get out from behind the desk. While sales experience will be well regarded, it is not a prerequisite. However, a reliable car and valid driver's licence are necessary.

Teacher and former nurse, Kristin Kelly, has had eczema all her life. Noticing a dearth of picture books that addressed the issue, Kristin set about writing one herself, to help kids better understand the condition and its symptoms.

Here Kristen speaks to RNZ about her book 'Mitchell Itches'and her hope that empathy and understanding will reduce bullying of kids whose skin conditions make them look different to their peers.

She also hopes that the character of Mitchell, will help children with eczema to feel seen.

"When children see themselves in a book they feel like they matter." Kristin says in this conversation with Jesse Mulligan from Afternoons.

Eczema is a common condition amongst Kiwi kids and adolescents. In fact, between 13 and 15 percent of them experience the effects Author Kristin Kelly has published a book for them to better understand the condition.

For so many kids changes to the family unit are a day-to-day reality they have to navigate.

When author Jess Galatola's family unit went through some massive changes she wanted a way to talk to her children about what was happening that reassured them they were loved and that none of the changes were their fault.

Due for release in early May Jess's first book, Some Families Change, is the book that she wrote to try to help her children and others, navigate family restructures.

Thanks to Buzz Words for helpinging highlight this great resource for families. http://www.buzzwordsmagazine.com/2024/04/some-families-change.html

Like Jess and illustrator Jenni Barrand we hope this book opens the door to conversations with kids about belonging and being loved, no matter what your family unit looks like.

With so many kids living with the aggravation of eczema, Mitchell Itches by Kristin Kelly and Amelina Jones is a picture book full of positive messages to help kids with eczema feel seen. It will also help their classmates better understand what it's like to live with a condition that can make kids feel isolated and uncomfortable.

Books with Heart on Issues that Matter

Welcome – to great books with glorious illustrations and great characters.

At EK Books we believe in the healing power of story. We also think it is important for every child to recognise themselves in the characters in books. That is why our picture books cover a wide range of human experience. Yes, within them you will find ponies, fairies and ballerinas, but you will also find those moments of light and shade that make life full and rich. A grandparent struggling with dementia, a child whose life with autism is brightened by a loving and empathetic sibling, messages for children filled with anxiety, and solace in the form of beautiful pictures and lyrical text in stories that deal with grief, with change, and even with domestic violence.

We welcome you to our online community and hope that here you will find messages that matter and stories that make your heart sing.
