We had a great turnout at the south Portland event a few days ago, about south Portland city's 10-year comprehensive plan with the city of Portland and its communities. It was amazing seeing individuals engage in conversation and dialogue about neighborhood concerns! Thank you all!!

Do you remember when the East End walking trail looked like this? It’s hard to believe it’s been less than a decade since the waterfront evolved into the hub it is now, with glass buildings and hotels on every corner.

One of the glass buildings there now houses Roux Institute at Northeastern University. The location was only temporary, however, as the university eyed more permanent properties for the institute.

Now, they’ve found that location in the iconic B&M bean factory.

So what exactly is the Roux Institute? And what does it mean for the future of Portland’s economic landscape?

Watching the situation unfold in Afghanistan feels horrifying enough as an American. But for Afghan refugees, the hurt is so much closer to home.

Neilab Habibzai is a Mainer, a young Afghan woman, an aspiring diplomat, and so much more. Her insights into the Taliban’s reclaimed rule, her strong opinions and even stronger will, and her raw compassion for her family in Kabul are all awe-inspiring.

Here are just a few photos from the “Message from Far Away” event at Portland’s Ocean Gateway yesterday. Though the parade part of the event was rained out, the party still went on. The event was in partnership with Remote Theatre Project’s “The Walk” which features a 12-foot puppet named Little Amal. She represents a young refugee girl traveling from the Turkey/Syria border to the UK in search of her mother. Amal and her handlers are physically traveling over 8,000 km to spread the humanitarian message, “Don’t forget about us.”

A truly interesting story out of New Hampshire this week! Do you remember the “North Pond Hermit?” Christopher Thomas Knight was a recluse living in the North Pond area of Maine’s Belgrade Lakes region for 27 years, surviving off burglaries of local residents. He was caught in 2013 and has since completed a 7-month jail sentence and a Co-Occurring Disorders Court Program. Now, in New Hampshire, David Lidstone, 81, has been ousted from the small cabin he lived in for 27 years in the woods by the Merrimack River after the landowner accused him of squatting. In an even crazier turn of events, the cabin was found burnt to the ground yesterday afternoon. This has been an amazing story to read about and cover.

Please check out our website in our bio to read more about Lidstone, or as locals like to call him, “River Dave.”
