105 years ago, today, 13th April 1919, the community garden, Jallianwala Bagh witnessed the massacre of thousands of peaceful protestors on the orders of General Dyer in April 1919. This incident sparked nationwide protests and some historians believe that it was the decisive step towards the end of British rule in India.

We always visit Jallianwala Bagh every time we visit Amritsar. Walking into this site was like going back in time. You can see the bullet holes in the walls, the well in which people jumped to save themselves and their loved ones. This memorial is one of the most haunting and must visit places in India.

We spent a great day with Rithvik Dhanjani the Ummeed Child Development Center. Did you know that 1 in 8 children in India have developmental disabilities like Autism, Down Syndrome, Dyslexia, Learning Disabilities etc.

But that doesn't mean that these children can't live life of maximum potential. They can have careers, marry and have full lives. What's needed is support and extra care especially early intervention.

Part 2 - Hidden Gems of Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh

Around 40 kms from Gwalior, stands a lone temple on top a hillock in the village of Mitaoli. It is one of the surviving temples dedicated to the mysterious and esoteric cult called Chausath Yoginis who were once famous for tantrism in the 9th and 10th century India. Connected to Goddess Parvati and worshipers of God Shiva, their temple architecture is distinct from other Hindu Temples. It is a hypaethral structure that is open to the sky. There is a belief that this is because the yoginis had been given the power to fly.

This temple is also known as Ekattarso Mahadeva Temple, was built by Kachchhapaghata King Devapala. It is said that the temple was used to provide education in astrology and mathematics based on the transit of the Sun.

The temple is also an engineering marvel. It has survived and stayed intact through multiple earthquakes. It also has a secret and humongous underground facility for rain water storage.
However, the most distinctive feature of the temple is its resemblance to the Parliament House of India. There is no evidence that the temple was the inspiration behind the design of the Parliament, but the resemblance is hard to miss.

Part 1 - Hidden Gems of Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh

The Gurjara-Pratiharas dynasty ruled many parts of Northern India from the mid-8th to the 11th century. It is famous for its architectural and artistic achievements, most famous being the Khajuraho Temples in Madhya Pradesh. However, many people don’t know about another masterpiece created by them - the Bateshwar Group of temples.

Located about an hour from Gwalior city, this archeological site is a must visit. Not only will you be mesmerised by the beautiful temples with exquisite carvings, but you can also see peacocks in abundance.

Bateshwar is a group of 200 temples. The temple architecture is from 2 different periods and the construction of these temples is a mystery that nobody can solve unless they go back in time. Why would the kings build 200 similar temples dedicated to God Shiva at the same site?

📍Nuranang Waterfall

Also called Jang waterfall as it’s located a few kilometres from the town of Jang. The original name of this waterfall is Phong-Phongma waterfall, this place offers gorgeous views and a welcome break from the drive between Sela Pass and Tawang.

Bring along a picnic basket and enjoy your lunch on the banks of the Tawang River. The place is so peaceful and beautiful that you will not want to leave.

📍 Tawang Monastery

Tawang in Arunachal Pradesh is famous for the Tawang Monastery, one of the most significant monasteries in Buddhism. The monastery is home to more than 500 monks, this is Asia’s second biggest and oldest monastery.

Coming here is like walking into a new world. Besides the peaceful feeling and quiet that is normal in any monastery, everyone here holds an aura of contentment and there is smile on every face. As soon as you enter the premises, it’s magical feeling. Somehow you forget every care, stress and sad thought behind.

A must visit at least once in your lifetime.

📍Chagzam Bridge, Tawang, Arunachal Pradesh

Literally translated this means Iron Bridge, Chagzam bridge is the oldest bridge in Arunachal Pradesh located over river Tasonmg Chu. This 600 year old bridge is not only a remarkable piece of architecture but also gives you the most beautiful views.

We sat here for hours just enjoying the quiet and the beauty of nature. Our friend, Tsering Chombay, told us that the bridge was named in honour of the first Dalai Lama who was popularly known as Lama Chang Azam Wangpo as he was not only a Philosopher but also an architect and was responsible for building more than 100 bridges across the Himalayan region.

In Arunachal Pradesh, Losar Festival is celebrated to mark the start of spring. It is one of the biggest festivals for the Monpa Tribe who are said to be inhabitants of Arunachal Pradesh since 500 BC.

We planned our trip to Tawang to coincide with the Losar Festival and it was one of our most joyous experiences. We reached Tawang a day before the start of the festival and found most people busy cleaning and decorating their houses in preparation for the first day of the festival. Typically, eight auspicious symbols called Tashi Dargye - the precious umbrella, a victory banner, 2 golden fish, a right coiled white conch shell, a lotus flower, a vase of treasure, the Dharma Wheel and the Eternal Knot are used to decorate houses.

On Day 1, everyone wears the traditional clothes and visits the Tawang Monastery to offer prayers and take the blessings of the high Lamas. The monastery is a sea of Red as that is the colour of the traditional dress and filled with laughter as people greet & wish each other. This is followed by 3 days of revelry - drinking the local rice wine, visiting family and friends, and taking part in local archery contests.

Unfortunately, we could not see the traditional mask dance, Aji Lhamu. It is mostly performed in the remote villages and not within the town.

The sight of this giant statue of Gautam Buddha or Shakyamuni Buddha will confirm that you have arrived in Tawang. This 18 feet tall statue is situated near the Tawang circuit on the small hill and is easily visible from any part of the city. The location of the statue is such that is has gorgeous views of the town around it. The statue was consecrated by H.E. Thegtse Rinpoche in the year 2015. Shakya is another name of Gautam Buddha and Shakyamuni means the Sage of the Shakyas.

It is believed that the statue of Shakyamuni Buddha represents the moment when he called the earth to witness his transcendence of the realm of Mara, the supreme God of the world (samsara), who had tried to distract him from his meditation

A must visit when you are in , this memorial was built to commemorate the sacrifices and valour of the brave soldiers of . It tells the story of the Chinese invasion in 1962 and India’s victory in spite of overwhelming odds.

Around some 90kms from Tawang, there is this quaint village, Zemithang. It wasn’t on our itinerary, but destiny had different plans, or should I say beautiful things planned for us. 😃

We coincidently took a day trip to Zemithang from Tawang and it was everything one would want on their holiday.

We drove through the dense forest with Nyamjang Chu river on one side at all times. We first visited the Tara devi temple, then the gorgeous BTK waterfalls. As it was the losar festival time and everyone was celebrating, our driver took us to their house for some local rice wine on the way. And finally, we reached Zemithang. The sight of the Gorsam Chorten Buddhist stupa, the beauty, and the peace in the air, took our breath away. We spent some good time soaking all that in and finally, capped our day chilling by the bank of the Nyamjang Chu river.

Tell us about your experience, when destiny worked it’s magic for you.

We reached Bomdila Monastery on a cold winter Sunday in time to catch a game of cricket being played by the monks. Established in 1965, the monastery looks more like a combination of a school and an university. You will find classrooms marked I to XII. It’s a completely different atmosphere from the older monasteries of Tawang and Zemithang.

Ever get the feeling that the universe is conspiring to get you to someplace. That's what happened to us on our last day in Tawang. We were planning to visit the usual tourist destinations - Bumla Pass, Madhuri lake etc. but had to turn back a second time as the roads were snowed in. Imagine our disappointment ☹️

That's when our driver suggested that we visit the Gorsam Chorten Stupa. We had seen pictures of this mesmerising Stupa nestled in the mountains next to a small secluded village, Zemithang. However, we had dropped it from our itinerary because of the distance. It is 92 kms away from Tawang and usually not a day trip in cold weather. So imagine our joy when our driver agreed to go and return the same day as we were heading back to Pune the next day.

This gorgeous stupa is the largest in the North East standing at 186 feet height and is a replica of the famous Boudhanath Stupa of Nepal. What makes this Stupa standout?? This is also the very place where the 14th Dalai Lama had his first rest after entering into India after he fled from Tibet.

One of our best experiences in this trip and the best part is the views are WOW.

Situated at a distance of 45 Km from Tawang is this larger than life statue of Tara Devi or Jetsun Dolma, the female Boddhisatva also known as the "mother of liberation", and represents the virtues of success in work and achievements.

For us this statue was a symbol of women empowerment as we did not know that women saints and deities existed in Buddhism. So of course, we took the drive down to the town of Lumla to see the statue with our own eyes.

The huge statue of Jetsun Dolma with a prayer hall underneath is awe inspiring and totally worth making a trip. Our suggestion, club it with your trip to Gorzam Chorten stupa.

Arunachal is rife with stories of the 1962 Indo China war and the phenomenal bravery of Indian soldiers. Jaswantgarh War Memorial immortalizes the story of Rifleman Jaswant Singh Rawat serving in the 4th battalion, Garhwal Rifles during the Battle of Nuranang. His bravery and his actions turned the war in favour of India.

Interestingly, Jaswant Singh is treated as though he is alive. His boots are shined, linen washed, towels changed. Soldiers who polish his shoes claim that they are often found covered with mud, a sign that he has been walking around at night. The legend goes that convoys in blizzards have seen Jaswant directing the vehicles through the serpentine bends. He continues to receive his promotions on time even after his death.

Jaswantgarh War Memorial stands just 25 kms from Tawang and is a must stop on enroute to Tawang.

Thupsung Dhargey Ling Monastery, is certainly one of the most beautiful Monastery in Arunachal Pradesh. Built in April 2017, and inaugurated by his Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama himself. The monastery overlooks entire Dirang city, and can be seen on a hill top from any part of the city.

This Monastery is a learning institute for the study of Tibetian Buddhism by monks and other people. The name “Thupsung Dhargey Ling ” was given by His Holiness Dalai Lama, which means the place of flourishing of Buddha’s speech.

You need to actually climb 2 floors to reach the main courtyard, but the 360 degree views from here are totally worth watching.

The Monastery is newly constructed and the moment you enter, huge statue of Buddha can be seen at the centre of the hall and entire hall is decorated with Buddhist design work.

On the ground floor, there is a huge garden, and you get a gorgeous view of entire Monastery from the centre of garden.

Since it is surrounded by mountains on all sides and far away from the main town, the monastery is extremely peaceful. All you can hear is the sound of birds or of soothing breeze, a perfect place to meditate and calm your mind.

Mandala Top is located at an altitude of about 11,000 feet, some 30 kilometres from Dirang in Arunachal Pradesh. It is a one of its kind attractions in India consisting of a collection of 108 Buddhist stupas built in concentric circles where each is inscribed with the words 'Om Mani Padme Hum'. Each stupa was contributed towards by every single family, making this religious site a testament to the strong communal bonds among the people.

The 108 Mane have been arranged in five concentric circles. In the centre, a Buddha statue with a small monastery at the bottom. The 108 Mane with the sacred Mantra are arranged in such a fashion that visitors can circumambulate them, reciting or meditating on the sacred mantra 108 times.

It is believed that the chanting of this sacred mantra 108 times is conducive to meditation and fosters tolerance and compassion and at the same time eliminates greed, anger, and other evil thoughts.

Koutoubia Mosque is the largest mosque in Marrakech and is said to be built in the 12th century during the reign of the Almohads dynasty. It is said to be the inspiration for the Giralda in Seville, Spain, and Le Tour Hassan in Rabat, Morocco.

There are many interesting legends associated with this mosque. Chief among them are the stories of how the mosque was destroyed half way through construction and rebuilt as the minaret wasn't properly aligned with Mecca. Also, the golden balls on top of the minaret were built by melting the jewelry of Almohad sultan Yacoub Al Mansour's wife. This was done as a punishment after she was caught eating during Ramadan fasting hours. Today, the balls are filled with special mineral salt found in the High Atlas Mountains. The salt contains nitrate and magnesium that prevents the spire from oxidizing. The salt is changed once a year, during Ramadan, to maintain the golden glint.

In front of the spire, there is a wooden stick that points towards Mecca and is also used to bear flags on religious holidays.
