The year of 2024 was one to remember. We had a lot of successful hunts and had some we went home empty handed. One hunt we haven’t talked about yet, is one we won’t ever forget or take lightly.

In October, a group of us headed up a mountain out west to try and fill our elk tags. That morning we had woke up early to increase our chances of beating everyone to the top of the mountain to start our hunt. As we approached the top it was just starting to get light out when we had a female mountain lion come towards us screaming and growling in the dark. We were about 70 yards apart and felt that we needed to protect ourselves as the lion closed its distance to 10 yards away. At 6:30 in the morning it’s hard to find an animal in a high powered scope that is trying to hunt you but got the crosshairs on the lion and squeezed the trigger putting the lion down.

After the shot, the shock set in. The noises the lion was making as it closed the distance is something that can’t be unheard. We happened to have cell phone service and were able to regroup as we called the game warden to come up to the top of the mountain. We did not have a tag for this lion but we felt our lives were at danger. After investigating the scene they understood this cat had the wrong intentions. They had previously done research on this cat so they packed it up and took it with them back to their local biologist.

Regardless of what you believe in, that morning on the walk to the top of the mountain, I was the last one in the pack and said a quick prayer. I said, “God I am so grateful to be able to spend this time with friends doing what we love. And please, Lord keep us safe.” I’m not saying the lion was going to kill us but I am glad to still be here to seek another adventure!!

As season starts to wind down, I reflect on all the opportunities I had and I couldn’t be more grateful. I definitely missed out on a lot and took advantage of a few but that’s why they call this hunting. The memories are what I will hold closest because that’s why I do this. Thanks to everyone who has reached out and good luck to everyone still getting after it.

This annual and perineal mix is coming in awesome. Four kinds of clovers, alfalfa, chicory, canola, and turnips. With it being late in the season to establish Clover, my idea was to use something like turnips and canola as a nurse crop to help my Clover, chicory, and alfalfa get established. ☘️ 🥬

Have you ever seen an arrow do this? . . . @treyskulski11 hunted his tail off early season in his @monsterbuckfoodplotseed plot, with multiple good bucks using it. A target buck of his made its way to the plot but never closed the distance. Later that evening, this same buck snuck back into the plot and made its way into range. Unfortunately, it did not end the way he wanted it to.
