Wow, what a way for to close out his “Best of All Worlds” tour in St. Louis. Playing in front of nearly 20,000 fans (a new record for the venue), Sammy, Michael Anthony, Joe Satriani and Kenny Aronoff (filling in for Jason Bonham) blasted through 22 classics, including solo Sammy, Van Halen and even Joe’s 1987 masterpiece “Satch Boogie”.

At nearly 77, Sammy is in a select group of rockers who can still bring it. Sure, there are adjustments, Michael Anthony adds in some lead, even singing all of “Ain’t Talkin’ ‘Bout Love” while Sammy takes a break. And the new keyboard player Rai adds background vocals as well. But they do it LIVE, a lesson for so many younger bands who can’t seem to function without their MacBooks doing everything.

For my money, they could have replaced the David Lee Roth-era Van Halen songs with some (better) Sammy songs like Humans Being or Black and Blue, but I get it. It was a night of memories and anyone who caught this tour will remember it always. 🤘

Great White did great cover tunes (Once Bitten…Twice Shy was originally an Ian Hunter song). In 1990, they recorded a ripping version of Led Zeppelin’s “Babe, I’m Gonna Leave You” for MTV Unplugged. Not many singers could nail the Robert Plant vocals like Jack Russell.
