Some comments below on some of the rhetoric around the Covid pandemic from one of our employees (Anand).

After reviewing various viewpoints, I find myself hesitant to fully endorse the rhetoric used by some on Covid-19. Terms like 'math murder' and similar expressions seem overly polemical and less than constructive in understanding the complexities of this global health crisis.

While I'm not an epidemiologist, I've encountered arguments that raise concerns. Claims such as the persistent belief that masks are universally ineffective may not align with current research. Moreover, comments that the impacts of vaccines on pregnant women cannot be measured before nine months give me reason for pause in terms of reading the rest of the arguments. While these are just two examples, the question around masks was never settled in terms of masks being totally ineffective. Thus, the constant rhetoric around mask mandates being horrible, as Bhaskar seems to think, makes you wonder if he has gone through all the research. These counterpoints are directed at some recent comments made by Bhaskar and deserve thoughtful consideration.

It's worth noting that discussions often revolve around peer-reviewed papers. Without substantial research papers, such as those often found in academic journals, discussions can be limited. So, without a research paper in prominent journals on masking or an accepted comment paper on already published papers, it is very difficult to know what exactly the arguments against masks are. Also, it is very difficult to review someone's stance if their stance or position is not reviewed by peers in the field such as as part of peer reviewed journals and conferences. While I bemoan the lockdowns imposed, that is not the same thing as endorsing another person's opinions on Covid.

Social media posts and tweets, while popular, often lack the depth needed for rigorous analysis. In navigating these discussions, I've found insights from experts like Noah Smith, Zeynep Tufecki, and Alex Tabarrok valuable. Their nuanced approaches provide a more balanced perspective on issues such as mask efficacy and the efficacy of lockdown measures.

Ultimately, the debate on Covid-19 policies and their societal impacts requires careful consideration of scientific evidence and expert analysis. Let's continue to engage thoughtfully and critically on these important matters
