📢 Excited to announce that I will be a speaker at the 2024 Hispanic Mental Health Conference!

I am honored to be part of the group of speakers facilitating Spanish presentations. I’ll be presenting: "Salud Mental Perinatal en la Comunidad Hispana" (Perinatal Mental Health in the Hispanic Community) in which we will explore the cultural factors, societal pressures, and specific barriers that can impact Perinatal Mental Health in the Hispanic community. As well as discuss the importance of culturally competent care, including the need for bilingual resources, community support, and destigmatization of mental health issues.

I want to extend my heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Leti Villagran Cavazos, LCSW-S, Hilda H. McClure, LPC and their wonderful staff at Cannenta Foundation, Inc. for the opportunity to be a part of this impactful event!

Looking forward to connecting with fellow professionals and advocates. Let's continue to empower our communities and promote positive change together! 🤝🏼

As we celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, it's crucial to acknowledge the challenges that our community faces. While this month is a time of pride and celebration, it's also a time to reflect on the hurdles that still need to be overcome:

🚧 Underrepresentation: Hispanic and Latino/a individuals are often underrepresented in various sectors, including leadership roles, media, and academia. We must work towards more equitable representation.

📚 Educational Disparities: Educational disparities persist, with limited access to quality education for some Hispanic and Latino/a students. Bridging this gap is essential for a brighter future.

💼 Economic Inequality: Economic inequality is a challenge for many within the community. Supporting Latino/a-owned businesses and advocating for economic opportunities is needed.

🏡 Immigration Issues: Immigration policies continue to affect many Hispanic and Latinx families. Advocating for fair and compassionate immigration reform is an ongoing effort.

📢 Language Barriers: Language barriers can hinder access to essential services and opportunities. Promoting language diversity and inclusion is key.

👩‍⚕️ Health Disparities: Hispanic and Latino/a communities often face health disparities, including limited access to healthcare and higher rates of certain health conditions. Addressing these disparities is vital.

is not just a celebration; it's a call to action. By acknowledging and addressing these challenges, we can make meaningful progress towards a more inclusive and equitable future for all.

Hispanic Heritage Month, observed from September 15th to October 15th, is a vibrant celebration of the rich culture, heritage, and contributions of Hispanic and Latinx communities in the United States.

Here's what you need to know:

🌮 Celebrations: Communities across the U.S. celebrate with festivals, food, music, dance, art exhibitions, and educational events that showcase the unique contributions and traditions.

🤝 Unity and Inclusion: Hispanic Heritage Month reminds us of the importance of embracing diversity, fostering inclusion, and appreciating the cultural richness that strengthens our society.

📚 Learning Opportunity: It's a chance for everyone to learn about Hispanic and Latinx history, achievements, and the challenges we overcome.

As a Public Health Doctorate student, I have learned there are several things you should know to make the most of your program and prepare for your future career. Here are five key things to keep in mind:

➡ Understand the social determinants of health: Public health is a field that focuses on promoting and protecting the health of populations. To do this effectively, it is essential to understand the social determinants of health (https://lnkd.in/gCCaR4qE) These factors can have a significant impact on health outcomes, and addressing them is essential for improving population health.

➡ Develop strong research skills: Public health is a research-driven field, and particularly as a doctoral student, you will be expected to conduct original research that contributes to the field's knowledge base. Developing strong research skills, including study design, data analysis, and interpretation, is essential to producing high-quality research.

➡ Stay up-to-date with current events: Public health is a constantly evolving field, and it is essential to stay up-to-date with current events, emerging threats, and new research findings. Following news sources, attending conferences, and participating in professional organizations can help you stay informed and connected with the broader public health community.

➡ Build strong communication skills: Public health involves working with a variety of stakeholders, including policymakers, healthcare providers, and the general public. Strong communication skills, including writing, speaking, and presenting, are essential for effectively communicating public health messages and research findings.

➡ Consider your future career goals: Public health is a diverse field with many different career paths, including academia, government, non-profits, and private industry. As a student, it is essential to consider your future career goals and tailor your education and research experiences to best prepare for your desired career path. Networking, internships, and mentoring relationships can also be valuable in helping you explore different career paths and gain practical experience in the field.

Of course I’m wearing my flag! 🇵🇷 This is representation.

Representation of my parents dream of a college education.

Representation of being 1 of the less than 5% of Latinas with a masters degree in the United States.

Representation of 1 of the many professionals that the circumstances of our Puerto Rico pressured us to leave in an attempt to protect our careers and make a living that allows us to provide for our families.

Representation of Puerto Ricans in the United States that overcome, every single day, the pressure to give up by many obstacles: language barriers, lack of cultural sensitivity, salary-gaps, etc.

This is representation of the result of working hard and unapologetically following your dreams with passion (and an accent 😉). ¡Se puede! ♥️

Today is World Mental Health Day and we continue to advocate stronger for the communities that need professionals to understand that -language- is crucial for their access to services:

➡️Each day the access to services by Spanish-speaking communities is limited, even in states where Spanish is the second most widely spoken language.

➡️Daily, thousands of Spanish speakers don't get access to health services because they do not have someone to assist them in Spanish during the resource navigation process.

➡️Each day parents look for therapists and other professionals who provide services in English to their children but explain the process to them in Spanish.

➡️Many kids and teens identify both English and Spanish as their main languages and need professionals who understand that they process information in both

➡️Even if many are learning English as a second language they do not want to allow Spanish to be eliminated from their lives.

How is your organization showing support with actions? Is your organization contributing to the limitations or to the accessibility?
