When we speak of rock ‘n’ roll we always consider the men such as Chuck Barry or Little Richard; however, Sister Rosetta Tharpe rarely receives the recognition she truly deserves. Described as the “Godmother of Rock ‘n’ Roll”, Sister Rosetta Tharpe makes history being an influential musician with her distinct voice and guitar combining the sounds of secular and spiritual music in her own Rock ‘n’ Roll way.

At the age of 29, her first single, “Strange Things Happening Everyday,” charted in 1945. Her music paved the way for artists such as Aretha Franklin by incorporating soul and gospel into the pop music world.

So, the next time someone mentions the influencers of Rock ‘n’ Roll, be sure to include Sister Rosetta Tharpe as her contributions to music granted opportunities for many artists we call legends today.

The 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion, nicknamed the "Six Triple Eight", was an all-black battalion of the Women's Army Corps composed of 855 black women both enlisted and officers, who had served overseas during World War ll.

Their mission was to keep mail flowing in the European Theatre Operations as troops incoming and outgoing mail had been backed up for almost 2 years. The motto established was “No Mail, Low Morale”, which provided the support of connecting service members with their loved ones back home.

As these women committed to fulfilling their duties serving in the U.S. Army, this aided in evolving our world for the better. We celebrate these brave and honorable women for their service.

There are no limits set within the African-American community as we’ve proven in history to dominate in multiple areas.

To be the first African-American to break the barrier in the National Hockey League demonstrates a great level of determination and willpower. He faced many obstacles through his season as spectators fought to discourage his efforts; however, he knew his mission was greater than himself and never hesitated to fight back.

O’Ree made a heavy impact in the National Hockey League as now all players are required to enroll in a preseason diversity training seminar. Willie O’Ree is an inspiration to us all to never be afraid to follow your passion, regardless of the challenges that are placed on your path.

As described as starting a Renaissance of reading, Sister Soulja exemplifies why we celebrate the success of our Black history.

Serving as a successful political activist and educator for underserved youth, her works were recorded on New York’s Bestseller List three times. Her novels surround the theme of faith, love, and integrity which has granted her the opportunity to work with Black and Nobel; a website who ships books and magazines to prisons.

Her mission is to provide resources and inspiration to build her communities toward finding hope beyond their circumstances.

What Sister Soulja novel have you read or looking forward to reading? 📚

African-American psychologists Kenneth B. Clark and Mama P. Clark, who as a married unit conducted a series of experiments to study the psychological effects of segregation on African-American children. One of their infamous experiments, “The Doll Test”, was influential in the Brown v. Board of Education (1954) where the Supreme Court ruled against racial segregation. This was a pivotal moment in the Civil Rights Movement and their contributions have shaped our world for the better.

Thank you to all our African-American psychologists who are investing in our mental development so we may advance as one.

In this corner, we have the first African-American world heavy weight champion weighing in a solid 200 lbs. At the height of the Jim Crow era this champion did not allow his ethnicity to stop him from obtaining success in his career. You may know him as Jack Johnson but in this ring he goes by the Galveston Giant.

We appreciate you, Jack Johnson, for not allowing the circumstances surrounding you to hinder for your success.

Everyone knows laughter is always good for the soul. We all have our favorite comedians that we love to support. Well, this comedian is no stranger to bringing people together with her comedy. Loretta Mary Aiken also known as Mom’s Mabley is the first successful female comedian. She is widely known for being the first woman comic to play at the Apollo theatre and Carnegie Hall in 1962. Her success as an African-American female comedian displays her willpower to see beyond the obstacles she faced but to embrace those dark times with comedic relief. She is also the first openly gay comedian which has allowed later comedians the chance to feel more comfortable with being their true authentic self despite the challenges the world has placed on sexuality. Mom’s Mabley was sure to give her audience a good show and we are proud to give her the flowers she well deserves.

When you believe in yourself, the possibilities are endless. Let’s take a moment to reflect on Florence Griffith Joyner, the epitome of becoming greater than your obstacles. Her passion and drive lead her to hold the world’s record in the 100 meters and 200 meters for 33 years. One of her infamous quotes was, “When anyone tells me I can’t do anything, I’m just not listening anymore”.

She is an inspiration to us all and serves as a reminder to never give up what you believe in. We are grateful for her achievements as she opened the door for the generations to come. ***aLovinSession

When it comes to the Brat tat-tat-tat her music took over the 90s. Da Brat’s debut album Funkdafield was released in 1994 going platinum, and making her the first solo female artist to do so. Afterwards, she went on to collab with many other well-known artists such as Kris Kross, Mariah Carey, and Missy Elliot, to name a few. Da Brat’s contributions to music opened doors for female and African American artist to attain success in the music industry. Whether while performing her own track or flowing over a feature, you know this Chicago native's voice when you hear it. Thank you for paving the way for female rappers of today ✊🏾
