The Real Prize Behind Every Intramural

In an intramural setting, the emotions displayed are sometimes too overflowing there are some things we often overlook. With this year’s intramurals, we witnessed a roller-coaster ride of emotions that were visibly seen in the event. The resounding yells and chants, cheers that were deeply rooted from one’s heart, the heartbreaks of every loss, the unbearable smile within victories, and so much more. This proves that intramurals is a patchwork of different feelings woven together. And yet, with all of these, the tense and uptight atmosphere that enveloped the whole venue made us forget the real prize that’s actually beside us.

From the rawness of each smile, the naked laughters, the unfiltered happiness, to the intimacy of each embrace for one another is a kind of token that’s worth to be cherished in our heart’s pockets. It might be only a fragmented moment of what once happened, but it’s a proof that our time was once ours to share. As we move forward in our lives, may we never forget our stories that we’ve written.

Because when time turns all of these into memories, the only thing that we can do is to look back, and to see the emotions our heart once took a ride back then. The moment that we had right here is a road that might be buried by changes over time, but the footprints that all leads to home will never be erased – it stays. We are all in this movie that has no rewinds and replays, yet will be a capsule for us to watch in the future days. And so, to be a part of this one in a million experience is something to be grateful for.

For the future days ahead, it might have a little sting to only be capable of remembering. But may it serve as a reminder for us that these are moments that rest within us – these are all a part of us.

RECAP: Grade 10 Entrepreneurial Day

"Kuya dyan nga po"
"Magkano po ito?"

Many aspire to create a business that not only captures people's hearts but sets them on fire with excitement. This dream became a thrilling reality during the epic two-day entrepreneurial extravaganza of Grade 10 Bonifacio on October 19-20.

Each of the five Grade 10 sections managed to come up with products that symbolized their shared experiences and bonds cultivated over the years. While the majority opted for desserts and snacks, some sections took a different route. 10 Maka-Kalikasan and 10 Maka-Katarungan channelled their inner artists through selling handmade crafts.

As you wander from stall to stall, it's a journey through the entire spectrum of human emotions. You'll encounter frustration, joy, disappointment, and excitement. These young entrepreneurs were testing the waters for the first time. Some of their plans got a bit soggy, supplies ran low, and a few groups had some "Oops!" moments. But one thing for sure— everyone had a blast.

As Entrepreneurship Day comes to a close, the satisfaction radiating from the faces of students and their dedicated TLE teachers is a testament to the day's resounding success. This event served as a canvas upon which unity, discipline, and boundless creativity. It's safe to say that the Plebeians pulled off yet another smashing success!

Thursday, on the 5th of October, the student leaders from the Supreme Secondary Learner Government (SSLG) leads the celebration of the World Teachers' Day at The Great Plebeian College for the school year 2023-2024.

The event was held in celebration of The World Teachers' Day with the theme of "Empowering educators: Strengthening Resilience, Building Sustainability". SSLG officers organized the teachers day which kicked off with a grand entrance of the High School faculty. Moreover, the program officially started with an opening prayer, followed by the National anthem and Plebeian March led Drum & Lyre Corporation.

Teachers also participated in fun and games such as Family Feud wherein two representatives from each grade level play the very well-known "Pinoy Henyo". Alongside the games are the intermission numbers spearheaded by the League of Performing Artists.

Another year of celebrating World Teachers' Day has come to a conclusion. But the memories instilled today is the driving force which will guide each one of us to strive for a better and more resilient academic year.

Although the program was interrupted by a heavy rain, the teachers and students did not falter. The band continued to play, and teachers and students jammed together with the beat of the songs, and this will remain as a symbolic moment that captures what it takes to be a teacher--to continue moving forward despite it all.

Igniting the Flames: the Torch’s JOURNey

Plebeian Torch – The Great Plebeian College’s official High School publication started its sparking flames way back in 2003. Before, the publication of the High School Department and College Department was joint as one with its tagline, “The Eyes and Voice of the Truth”. Since then, the joint publication already managed to join competitions which cover Pangasinan I. A fast forward of events, when Sir Jose Ramil Sibun was appointed as the Torch’s Editor-In-Chief (EIC), a resolution took place that separated the publication of the High School Department and the College Department. The High School Department’s school publication maintained its name with “The Plebeian Torch” while the College Department with its new name, “The Plebeians”. Nonetheless, the main purpose of the school’s publication was never changed.

Even back then, Plebeian Torch already had its banner waiving high as it accomplished a lot of great feats. However, the road toward success is not complete with its bumps. Since our publication back in the days was still in its beginning stages, various problems arose. Because of the lack of budget, journalists who get to compete are only limited. The Torch also had to ask the parents’ consent if they were willing to spend money for the competition’s registration fees because financial support was also one of the main problems back then.

Despite being at wits’ end with all the bumps that we have encountered, the light that Torch had ignited still prevailed as our journalists continuously bagged awards in representing our school from division to national level.

The starting point was when The Plebeian Torch first joined last 2005 in Bacarra, which also, in the same year, gave birth to our publication’s first win. Michael Davis Rapay-Rapay, with Mrs. Abela Alvis as the School Paper Adviser obtained first place in Sports Writing, as well as Jessica de Maya placing fourth. Representing Alaminos City, various campus journalists qualified for NSPC which was supposedly going to be held in Surigao. Unfortunately, private schools were not yet subsidized by the LGU's school board during those times; which means contenders from private schools like Rapayrapay had a slim chance to represent the division and even the region because of lack of financial assistance. However, this paved the way for Alaminos City Division to reconsider the plight of participating private schools in every competition whether in regional level or national level. This sad experience of Rapayrapay served as an eye opener for educational leaders in Alaminos City. Thus, contenders from private schools were given the fair opportunity to compete since they were already subsidized by the local government.

Aside from the win of Michael, various accomplishments piled up. Year 2006, Joefre Estallo won fourth place in the category of Copyreading and Headline Writing which was held in San Carlos City. Followed by the Year 2007, when April Geraldine Radovan bagged first place in Feature Writing in Manaoag, qualifying for NSPC which took place in Cotabato. Coming after is the win of John Lester Rabaya in Sta. Barbara, as he placed third in Editorial Writing, qualifying for the 2009 NSPC in Naga City). In NSPC 2017-2018, John Paul G. Cortez represented the school in his category Science and Technology Writing. Alongside the individual wins back then, the burning passion remained as the Torch’s Editorial Page won 9th place in Manaoag, followed by a remarkable victory as the newspaper’s Sports Page also won the “Best Sports Page” back then in Bacarra. The winning cycle continued with our most recent win, as Alyssa Faith Nuevo Malanum qualified for the 2022-2023 RSPC with Pamela Lorraine D. Asia as coach, accompanied by the achievements of our other campus journalists, including Torch Patrol which placed third for Radiobroadcasting (Division Level). A proof that even before, the school’s pen already proved that its ink is something that’s not easily erased.

In life – falling down is an inevitable event. The burning desire to create a remarkable path for the truth to prevail will always keep us shifting from our focus. These flames of our Torch will never go down. And though there might be a time when this beacon of light might only shed a flicker of warmth for us, it will always crawl back to the place where the passion started. Because no matter what, a fire that has already started will never stop – as long as its driving fuel never runs out.

From then, the light that illuminated the path that we are walking right now will never have its concluding mark. The Plebeian Torch had come a long way, but we wouldn’t stop here. For all the inks from people whose pens paved the way – Plebeian Torch will continue to serve as the eyes and voice of the truth, and will make its way once again to the top – like ashes starting to reignite and bring back its flames.

WEEK'S RECAP | When Cupid’s Arrows Strikes Again

“When there is love, there is life.” – Mahatma Gandhi. Love is truly in the air as Plebeians celebrate the most awaited puzzle piece in their high school life, Valentine’s Day. And here, we tend to love, a little bit more than yesterday.

Spearheaded by the Supreme Student Government, hand in hand with the school’s different clubs, they prepared various booths which were solely made for this year’s Heart’s Day. Starting with the Confession Booth and Jail Booth (Love Knot) from the HSSG, Photo Booth from the Ai-Tech Club, a Sci Love-Café brought by the Yes-O club, Food Quest from the LLG, “Carta de Amor” and Masked Romantic Dance by the Hiraya Club and a Food Stall from the AP Club, each were made by love to make the magic happen. Adding with a heart-squeezing intermission numbers from different grade levels, and with Patricia Go including Regie Rea winning the crown for the Ms. And Mr. Valentine’s Day – it certainly was the icing on the cake.

As the event went by, you would think Cupid’s arrows are all over the school campus. Plebeians also got to wear the color of their hearts and whether it’s the students or teachers, their hands sure are full – with chocolates, flowers and letters given by their certain “someone”.

Valentine’s Day is celebrated by many to keep the golden word alive: Love. “Love” isn’t just a word meant for two people who are love-struck with one another. And just because that nowadays, we are being taught that in order to experience this kind of mysterious feeling, one should find and discover it on his or her “other pair”. And though that might be a bit true, we should learn to continue living within the idea that love is found not just everywhere, but also in places and people where we often tend to overlook – our friends, family, and ourselves.

Undoubtedly, that in the far future, we’d reminisce the moments and feelings we experienced this day – a proof that we once loved and were once loved.

A January Bang for Plebeians!

The Great Plebeian College already made some noise for 2023’s first month as it held its Intramural once again after 2 years of lockdown, with the theme “One Heart, One Spirit, One Mission in Sports”. Eyeing for Plebeians and how their souls are connected in the sports they are in, it’s a proof that this school is not all about academics, but how GPC also hones each student’s talents.

With the starting spark from the Drum and Lyre Corp., Teachers, as well as students from Elementary, Highschool and College, welcomed the beginning of this 4-day momentous event. Consisting of the Red Phoenix, Blue Eagles and Yellow Dragons from the Elementary Department; Grade 7 Warriors, Grade 8 Pink Raptors, Grade 9 Gray Wolves, Grade 10 Green Commodores, Grade 11 Maroon Monarchs, and Grade 12 Red Knights from Highschool; and lastly, the Acers and Mentors from the College Department.

Igniting the event’s fire with Charmaine Ashley Tambot, a Palarong Pambansa qualifier as she lights the torch, spreading the message of peace and unity throughout the venue. And finally, opening the door to the Intramurals as Mr. Cristian Paul Olpindo, Head of Student Affairs, gave his opening remarks.

Spreading the flames with the different representatives of Mr. and Ms. Intramural from different grade levels of the three departments go with their glamourous walks, and not just their “introductions” but the glow they made with their names that certainly made an impression through the students and judges.

Continuing with the heat of the Elementary Department’s blazing souls, as Red Phoenix, Blue Eagles and Yellow Dragons clash. Flooding the auditorium with cheers and applauds, though they might be little, they surely shouldn’t be belittled. Ending the competition with the Yellow Dragons bagging the trophy, proving that a dragon’s flame will remain unextinguished.

Adding fuel to the fire, players from different grades continued to show off their skills whose dedication could be seen in their eyes. Behind every move and choice that a player makes, lies the responsibility of being trusted and trusting yourself. “Siyempre kabado pero pinag-iisapan ko muna ang move ko bago gumawa ng desisyon,” Katherine Oclima, a chess player from Grade 9 said.

Louder than the bang of last New Year’s Eve, indeed, it’s a win-win situation both for newcomers and veterans. This year’s GPC Intramurals is as if a newly sparked flame that’ll still continue after being extinguished during the pandemic. Here, Plebeians are one. Participating with one heart, one spirit, and one mission in sports.
