This is where it all began... In 1988 when I was still in high school, I applied for my first loan at a bank, and my employer at the restaurant I worked for at the time co-signed to purchase a âfuturisticâ Yamaha MT 44D multitrack tape recorder complete with the RM602 mixing console, patch bay and storage compartment. It weighed a ton and doesnât seem like it now, but at the time it was very âstate of the artâ and just incredible. I made hundreds of demos, some with various bands I played in, but mostly by myself in my bedroom with the help of a Roland DR-220A drum machine (Dr. Rhythm), a Stratocaster I purchased with money from the same job, and a cheap bass that someone had given me. Itâs funny to think of the limitations it had at the time, and the amount of ping pinging tracks to the point of audible degradation I did to make room to overdub more stuff. Truly amazing times.
