I was drawn into Ibis because it was a new coffee shop, but also it incorporates one of my many passions: music. Affordable coffee and a relaxing atmosphere draws in coffee lovers all across Wilmington. Tall windows that span from the ceiling to the floor bring in natural light that creates a comforting but unique environment to sit and chat with friends or study. The warm and welcoming cafe brings comfort and ease to the atmosphere.

The Ibis opened on Dec. 20 and introduced a new way of sipping lattes. Located in the Soda Pop District near historic downtown Wilmington, Ibis cafe welcomes customers to a warm variety of drinks and music. Matt Ray and Abbye McGee founded Ibis to share their love for coffee and introduced the HiFi concept to the Wilmington area.

In an op-ed running in over 50 college newspapers across the country, The Seahawk joins the UNC Chapel Hill March for Our Lives chapter to condemn the country’s inaction in addressing gun violence.

Students are taught to love a country that values guns over our lives.

Some of us hear the sound of gunfire when we watch fireworks on the Fourth of July, or when we watch a drumline performance at halftime. But all of us have heard the siren of an active shooter drill and fear that one day our campus will be next.

By painful necessity, we have grown to become much more than students learning in a classroom — we have shed every last remnant of our childhood innocence. The steady silence of Congress is as deafening as gunfire.

We will not wait for individual trauma to affect us all before we respond together — our empathy is not that brittle. Our generation responds to shootings by bearing witness and sharing solidarity like none other. We text each other our last thoughts and we cry on each others’ shoulders and we mourn with each other at vigils. We convene in classrooms and we congregate in churches and we deliberate in dining halls. We’re staunch and we’re stubborn and we’re steadfast.

Our hearts bleed from this uniquely American brand of gun violence. Yet, we still summon the courage to witness firework shows and remind ourselves that we love our country so much that we expect better from it.

The Shoreline Sports Complex officially opened on campus Nov. 17, 2023. Before the renovation was made, there were previously three basketball courts and one sand volleyball court where the complex sits. These changes have been made with several reasons in mind, but one of the main reasons is that the official UNCW Beach Volleyball team can now play on campus. The team was previously playing off campus and the goal of the university with the complex is to allow more supporters to attend matches.

Despite the lack of hype, “Wonka” proved to be a “scrumdiddlyumptious” box office success. Starring Timothée Chalamet as the title role in an all-star cast, the musical comedy exceeded expectations in the box office and ranked as the number one film in theaters at the end of 2023.

Being the third live-action film based on Roald Dahls’ book, “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,” “Wonka” creates a backstory for the iconic character on how he became the whimsical, world-renowned chocolatier audiences are familiar with. The movie follows W***y Wonka as he adventures to the Galleries Gourmet, the place where the most notable chocolate sellers reside and sell their goods, to start his own chocolate shop and keep the dream he and his mother shared alive.

In Oct. 2023, Callisto, a nonprofit organization, launched an app called Callisto’s Vault to be available for all college students in the United States and its territories. The app is free for anyone with an active .edu email. Callisto assists college students in reporting incidents of sexual assault and allows users to connect with other victims. The aim is to protect the user’s personal information by enabling students to submit allegations without identifying themselves and choosing what information is stored in the app.

Callisto Vault is an encrypted platform that enables victims of sexual assault to safely record sexual violence, even if they decide not to report it. Encrypted technology uses cryptography – coding information so that the intended person is the only recipient and prevents unauthorized parties from accessing information – if they do, the party would not be able to read the information. By creating an encrypted account, Callisto does not know the identity of the users and will not report any stored information without the individual’s consent, including to the administration at their university.

SGA recently passed a resolution to implement a new program in UNCW’s bookstore, known as “First Day Complete” (FDC). The initiative, which will cover all undergraduate courses, will automatically charge students a set amount of money, approximately $20, per credit hour each semester to receive every necessary textbook or digital program required by their professors. FDC intends to reduce the expenses and time that students spend gathering materials. UNCW already participates in FDC for a few select courses, such as Math 111 and various sections of Spanish and German courses. The program is not required, and students who select to opt out will be provided with a refund on their eBill account.

The momentum made by Wilmington’s growing film industry has slid to a halt due to the recently ended SAG-AFTRA Actor’s Strike. The movement, beginning in and largely based in Los Angeles, impacted film production across the United States.

The SAG-AFTRA Strike is a strike that started July 14 and ended Nov. 9, continuing for a total of three months across the United States. The strike was held by the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) against the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP), because of labor disputes surrounding pay increases, protections from the emergence of AI and residual pay from streaming services.

If someone says, “romance books,” many people think of the Harlequin romance novels with dreamily airbrushed couples on the cover, or possibly a classic story like Jane Austen’s “Pride and Prejudice.” I would bet that the image of romance is not stalking, physical violence or a power imbalance between romantic partners. Books containing these themes are often described as “dark romance” books. Although they are a guilty pleasure read for many, they often romanticize abusive relationships and toxic behavior, normalizing them among readers.

Disney debuts “Wish” in the year of its 100th anniversary and pays tribute to the studio’s years of magic. Audiences can look for numerous references made to “Bambi,” “Peter Pan,” “Mary Poppins” and “Snow White and the Seven Dwarves.” Disney is known for their beautiful animation that inspires generations and “Wish” is no different. The scenery and character design appear as though it is from a storybook.

The movie takes place in the City of Rosas, an island where people go to fulfill their dreams. Rosas was created by King Magnifico (Chris Pine) to protect its people and their hopes. The city is a blend of cultures and ethnicities tied together by their shared beliefs. Magnifico is a sorcerer who watches over his people’s wishes and grants those he sees worthy.

On Nov. 8, UNCW hosted an open debate for students on a prominent political issue that has divided American citizens for years: Should the United States implement more restrictive gun laws to reduce violence?

The event was hosted by Braver Angels, an organization that aims to promote unity and civil conversation among American citizens on a variety of political issues. Braver Angels is part of a larger organization known as the College Debates and Discourse Alliance. Sadie Webb, a program manager for the Alliance, explained why she believes Braver Angels debates are beneficial.

On Aug. 22, UNCW biology and marine biology assistant professor Dr. Lorian Schweikert and her lab published a study in the scientific journal Nature Communications. The study is the culmination of a seven-year project aimed at exploring how the hogfish senses its surroundings. Unlike most other fish, it can dynamically change its skin color.

The hogfish is a large, tropic fish that gets its name from its rounded, pig-like nose. It primarily lives in and around coral reefs spanning from the Floridian to upper South American coastlines. The hogfish draws much attention from fisheries and their managers because it is valuable to recreational and commercial fisheries.

Imagine moving to or traveling to another state where a core part of your identity is not legally recognized because of religion led politics. This is the road that the Supreme Court and Congress are following after their decision regarding the illegitimate case of the wedding designer and the election of Mike Johnson as Speaker of the House.

In 2015, a Kentucky county clerk named Kim Davis denied a gay couple their wedding license due to her religious objections. The case made national headlines, and just in September, that couple was awarded $100,000 in damages. The controversy was sparked by the Supreme Court’s decision affirming gay marriage, which Justice Clarence Thomas cited as a case that should be reviewed in his opinion on the Colorado wedding website design case.

Earlier this month, several of the Seahawk’s staff traveled to Atlanta for this year’s Fall National College Media Convention, hosted by the Associated Collegiate Press. From a tour of the Atlanta Gray TV station to keynote speeches by notable speakers such as M. Alexis Scott and Charles M. Blow, the trip was a huge success and offered our members with a great opportunity to explore a new city and network with fellow student journalists. We can’t wait to return to the convention again next fall when it travels to New Orleans.

The book was banned as it went against the Puritan government as it was about the critique of customs and power structures.

“Every person deserves to see themselves in the literature that we read,” said Robinson.

Following the Razor Walker Awards on April 25, 2023, Van Dempsey, the Dean of Watson Education has since been removed from his position. UNCW announced on June 26 that Van Dempsey would be “leaving his position,” effective July 14.

During the award ceremony, many faculty and staff members took part in a visual demonstration by walking out to protest Senator Lee’s (R) nomination for the award due to his support for Senate Bill 49, dubbed by critics as the “Don’t Say Gay” bill.
