Internet monitor Netblocks reported a nationwide disruption of social media platforms on Sunday as the PTI held a virtual fundraising telethon.

“Live metrics show a nation-scale disruption to social media platforms across Pakistan, including X/Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube,” the internet tracking agency said at 6:13pm.
It added that the incident came as “persecuted former prime minister Imran Khan’s party, PTI, launches its election fundraising telethon”.
Netblocks Director Alp Toker told AFP the disruptions were affecting network providers across the country.
“Such nation-scale social media targeting political activities is almost unprecedented at this scale — Venezuela is one other country that has used similar measures to limit opposition speeches and rallies,” he said.

With the February 8 general election just a little over a month away, the upper house of Parliament on Friday passed a resolution seeking to delay the polls due to security concerns.
Caretaker Information Minister Murtaza Solangi and PML-N Senator Afnan Ullah Khan both opposed the non-binding resolution, which was moved by independent Senator Dilawar Khan during a session with only 14 lawmakers in attendance.
The Upper House of the Parliament has a total of 100 members.
As he read the resolution out loud, Dilawar said the Constitution upheld the right to vote for every citizen of Pakistan and the Election Commission of Pakistan was bound to conduct free and fair polls contingent upon inclusivity and ensuring the participation of all regional people.

Caretaker Health Minister Dr Nadeem Jan on Friday said that the country had not yet recorded any cases of the new Covid-19 variant, JN.1 Omicron, but emphasised “we are on red alert”.
The statement from the minister comes a day after the federal government decided to procure 500,000 doses of a Covid vaccine, amid a possible resurgence of the new variant of the virus in various countries.
The procurement of Pfizer vaccines from the US was planned on the recommendations of the Emergency Operation Centre’s (EOC) technical advisory group following the emerging threat of the JN.1 variant.
Around 200,000 doses of vaccine will likely reach the country in the coming week, while the remaining will be available in the next phase, according to a Dawn report.
The JN.1 variant is also called a sub-variant of the Omicron lineage. It is more transmissible than other circulating variants, and the proportion of cases caused by this particular virus has been rising.
Even though health experts have declared it less severe than the other strains, they are of the view that it may lead to complications for the high-risk population, especially elderly people with low immunity.

Two terrorists, including a “high-value target”, were killed in an intelligence-based operation (IBO) in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Tank district, the military’s media affairs wing said on Friday.
In a statement, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said security forces conducted an operation late last night on the “reported presence of terrorists”.
“After an intense fire exchange, two terrorists, including HVT Gul Yousaf Toor, were sent to hell,” it said.
The ISPR stated that Toor had “remained actively involved in numerous terrorist activities against security forces, including high-profile terrorist
attacks in Tank and Dera Ismail Khan districts as well as extortion and target killing of innocent civilians”.

Pakistan is likely to make a change for the third Test against Australia, with opener Imam-ul-Haq expected to be dropped and newcomer Saim Ayub making his debut.

The team management is unhappy with Imam's slow batting in the series, where he has scored 94 runs at a low strike-rate. The management has emphasized playing positive cricket. There are also plans to reduce the workload on vice-captain Shaheen Afridi, who will bowl fewer overs in the upcoming Test.

Australia won the second Test, and Pakistan aims to improve their performance in the final match starting on January 3.

A photographer from Turin, Italy, Valerio Minato, captured a rare shot of the moon aligned with the Basilica of Superga's dome and the tip of Monviso, the highest mountain of the Cottian Alps. This extraordinary photo earned Minato the "Astronomy Picture of the Day" for Christmas 2023 from NASA.

He had the idea for the photo in 2017 and spent six years waiting for the perfect shot, meticulously studying the moon's phases, horizon position, and weather conditions. While some praised his work, others accused him of using technology.

Minato defended his authenticity, emphasizing the importance of technique, patience, and observation in photography.

The interim premier directed the relevant authorities to chalk out the required policies to attract international IT experts to the country.

Kakar highlighted that the information technology could play a vital role in strengthening Pakistan’s economy as the country had a huge potential in this sector.

India's government has recently targeted high-profile journalists with Pegasus spyware, Amnesty International and The Washington Post said in a joint investigation published Thursday.

Created by Israeli firm NSO Group and sold to governments around the world, Pegasus software can be used to access a phone's messages and emails, peruse photos, eavesdrop on calls, track locations and even film the owner with the camera.

India's government did not immediately respond, but it denied similar accusations in 2021 that it used Pegasus spyware to surveil political opponents, activists and journalists.

Indian media reported last month that the country's cyber security unit was investigating allegations by opposition politicians of attempted phone tapping after they reported receiving Apple iPhone warnings of "state-sponsored attackers".

Pat Cummins and Nathan Lyon put Australia in the driving seat of the second Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Wednesday to leave Pakistan tottering at 194-6, still 124 runs behind on day two.
At stumps, Mohammad Rizwan was on 29 and Aamer Jamal not out two after Cummins took the crucial wickets of Abdullah Shafique (62) and Babar Azam (one), then Agha Salman (five).
Lyon chipped in by removing Imamul Haq (10) and Shan Masood (54), while Josh Hazlewood bowled Saud Shakeel for nine as Pakistan’s dream of a first Test win in Australia since 1995 faded.

LAHORE: At last, Yasir Arafat will get the chance to be part of Pakistan’s coaching panel.
The former all-rounder is set to be Pakistan’s coach for the upcoming five-match T20I series in New Zealand, less than a year after he was in the fray to become the team’s bowling coach.
Former Pakistan team director Mickey Arthur had wanted Yasir to train the team’s pacers but eventually South African pacer Morne Morkel was appointed for the job.
The incumbent team director Mohammad Hafeez, however, has decided to give Yasir, an England and Wales Cricket Board Level-4 coach, the reins of the team for the series against New Zealand with Umar Gul to continue as the bowling coach.
It is learnt that Yasir may also be hired for next month’s ICC U-19 World Cup. Reports suggest that Rehan Riaz, the bowling coach of the U-19 team, may not be able to travel to South Africa, opening the door for Yasir.

• PHC judge asks ECP to restore party’s electoral symbol, publish certificate of intra-party polls
• Chairman Gohar Ali Khan lauds court, says ECP has ‘acted like an adversary’
PESHAWAR: In another legal victory for the PTI, the Peshawar High Court on Tuesday suspended an order of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), which had declared the former ruling party’s intra-party polls ‘void’ and revoked its electoral symbol last week.
Justice Kamran Hayat Miankhel pronounced a short order on a petition, jointly filed by PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali and six other leaders, requesting the court to declare the Dec 22 verdict of the ECP without jurisdiction.
“In the meantime, the impugned order dated Dec 22, 2023, is suspended with further direction to the Election Commission to publish the certificate [of PTI’s intra-party polls] on its website and restore the election symbol of PTI. This order will be operative till Jan 9, 2024,” the single-judge bench ordered, while issuing notices to the respondents, including the ECP.

An Israeli airstrike Monday in a Damascus neighborhood killed a high-ranking Iranian general, Iranian state media said.

The killing of Razi Mousavi, a long-time adviser of the Iranian paramilitary Revolutionary Guard in Syria, comes as clashes along the Lebanon-Israel border between Hezbollah and Israel continue to intensify with fears of the Israel-Hamas war sparking a regional spillover with Iran-backed groups. The Israeli strikes killed two other generals earlier this month in Syria.

With the general elections rapidly approaching, the leading political parties have yet to formally unveil their election manifestos.

The five mainstream parties, including PML-N, PPP, PTI, MQM-Pakistan, and JUI-F, are reportedly finalising their manifestos, expected to be announced within the next month. An exception is Jamaat-i-Islami (JI), which has already prepared and disseminated its manifesto.

However, interaction with mainstream political parties indicates a shared emphasis on economic rejuvenation, tackling soaring inflation, and empowering local government autonomy in the forthcoming elections, scheduled for Feb 8.

Pakistan born, Australian star opener, criticized the ICC for its recent stance. The ICC repeatedly denied him permission to express support for human lives in relation to the Gaza Genocide. Initially, he was denied the opportunity to wear shoes bearing the message "All lives matter." Subsequently, he was fined when he wore a black armband in solidarity with the people of Gaza. Now, he has been refused permission to wear a peace symbol, a "pigeon," on his shoes. In his recent Instagram story, he sarcastically highlighted the ICC's double standards.

The Israeli army has indicated its forces are close to having operational control in north Gaza, after weeks of intense fighting, Al Jazeera reports.

Now, “we focus our efforts against Hamas in southern Gaza”, military spokesman Jonathan Conricus said.

Meanwhile, the health ministry in Gaza said that at least 20,424 people have been killed in the Palestinian territory since the start of Israel’s bombardment, AFP reports.

The toll included 166 deaths in the past 24 hours, it said, as fighting continued in the bombardment that started when Hamas launched its October 7 attack on southern Israel.
