*DO NOT DO THIS AT HOME* I'm setting fire to fabrics so you don't have to!
This is Part 3 of 4
What will burning fabrics teach us?
-That the origins of fibres have a huge effect on how they behave...
Which is important for knowing how they can work for you...
And against you.
There'll be some names you know and some you won't, but becoming familiar with fabrics and what they offer will help you to select the best fibres for your wearing comfort and the longevity of your garments
💚🌏💚🌍💚🌎💚
I'll be posting further properties of these fibres shortly 👀

Most fibres go through the same process, wool, linen, viscose even polyester and silk (once they have been cut into shorter fibres)
This factory is outside of Istanbul, Turkey is huuuuuge 60,000m2 (8.4 football fields) The process started at one end of the warehouse with the raw materials and finished at the other with cones and cones of yarn. It also has a laboratory that checks for quality and tests for improvements
The videos from the factory were taken over 2 years ago, sorry there’s not one of the spinning machines they are 😍😍 but I did the best I could with my 🙌🏻

Let me introduce you to your Cotton T-Shirt!
A lot of sustainability emphasis is put on the sewing up of garments, but if you thought that machinists get squeezed... imagine being earlier in the supply chain! 😰
That's why I want to start off by teaching you about different fibres and fabrics!
So we start it off with one I feel we'd all think we're familiar with Cotton! and to bring a new perspective... Organic Cotton!
*A creative licence or two was taken here*
-It's always good to check but... you're tampons are regulated and safe... but they also come in Organic 😉
-Wearing cotton is not going to make you sick, though there is the possibility you are absorbing the chemicals when you wear it. The bigger chemical issues are the run offs and workers using them with little to no training or equipment.
-'Cotton' in this video represents both:
'Conventional' - this is grown with natural seed but requires a lot of chemical regulations and also
'Genetically Modified' - which is a seed that has been engineered to require fewer pesticides...
The rest of these points I'll address in posts and stories ✌️
But to wrap up with the child labour element, an estimated 168 million children are engaged in child labour, more than half of them (85 million) in hazardous work. Over two-thirds (68 per cent) of children in child labour perform unpaid work alongside their parents or in family enterprises. Agriculture accounts for the majority of child labour, with 59% (or 98 million) between 5-17 years working in this sector. [ICO Child Labour in Cotton Briefing] Then you need to include the spinning mills where the fibre is made into yarn and fabric (one of the more popular sectors for child labour in the supply chain) and of course the factories where they are made into garments... and the fact that the fashion industry is the most labour intensive industry in the world... so yeah at least a few million...
I would like to thank my amazing friends for bringing my weird an
