Fathers are not born, but made. A man does not become a father simply by bringing a child into the world, but by taking up the responsibility to care for that child. Whenever a man accepts responsibility for the life of another, in some way he becomes a father to that person.

Being a father entails introducing children to life and reality. Not holding them back, being overprotective or possessive, but rather making them capable of deciding for themselves, enjoying freedom and exploring new possibilities. Perhaps for this reason, Joseph is traditionally called a “most chaste” father. That title is not simply a sign of affection, but the summation of an attitude that is the opposite of possessiveness. Chastity is freedom from possessiveness in every sphere of one’s life. Only when love is chaste, is it truly love. A possessive love ultimately becomes dangerous: it imprisons, constricts and makes for misery. God himself loved humanity with a chaste love; he left us free even to go astray and set ourselves against him. The logic of love is always the logic of freedom, and Joseph knew how to love with extraordinary freedom. He never made himself the centre of things. He did not think of himself, but focused instead on the lives of Mary and Jesus.

‭‭𝗟𝗘𝗡𝗧: 𝗔 𝗣𝗶𝗹𝗴𝗿𝗶𝗺𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗚𝗼𝗱

Every year, we, the faithful, are given this time of reflection and repentance during the season of Lent. During this season, we indulge in a pilgrimage with Christ in so many places, places that gradually make us know him well. Our Lord Jesus Christ makes us his pilgrims and sets us on a journey for us to reflect upon his great love and make us closer to him again and again.

Our Lord took us to the wilderness on the First Sunday of Lent, where we are urged to hold fast to our faith in the face of temptation and realise that we are not on this journey alone.

Then, at Mount Tabor, our Lord, James, Peter, and John showed us a glimpse of glory and urged us to be transfigured—that is, to leave behind our old, disagreeable ways and adopt new, heavenly ones.

At the Temple, He served as a reminder that everything we cling to that is against God's will would be removed from us and that He is capable of restoring us from being broken and destroyed.

We are then driven to consider the enormous love of God for us, His people, when our journey sets to a hidden conversation between our Lord and Nicodemus.

And then the Lord taught us that to die is to grow, and he assured us that as long as our hearts are with him, we will never be alone in this journey.

The season of Lent is a great opportunity to spend time with the Lord. Hopefully we will profoundly spend time with him through deep introspection of the messages He wants us to ponder in every place we've been with him.

Our pilgrimage with the Lord hasn't ended yet; there are so many places and wonderful messages he wants us to reflect on in the coming days. Let us carry the takeaways we had as we continue to walk with the Lord on this journey of faith.
