Quenette Shehane was 21 years old when she left the fraternity house of her boyfriend around 6pm on December 20, 1976. She was running to a corner store to buy salad dressing. The next day, Quenette’s abandoned car and lifeless body was found the next day. Quenette’s murder was brutal and senseless, and the individuals responsible would not go unpunished. Between 1924 & 1950, Georgia Tann completely changed the game of adoption, placing thousands of children with families, even celebrities like Joan Crawford, June Allyson, & Rick Flair. However, the “Mother of Modern Adoption” used this reputation, along with the help of many powerful politicians, to kidnap over 5,000 children to be sold under the guise of adoption over the course of 26 years, though many didn’t make it out of the orphanage alive. Charles Jason Vosseler (known as “CJ”) & William “Billy” Martin, were both toddlers in the fall of 1986 when their parents, 44 year old Charles Martin Vosseler & 38 year old Ruth Ann Vosseler (Parker), were in the early stages of a seemingly amicable divorce in Rockford, New Hampshire. On October 9, 1986, Charlie picked up 3 year old CJ & 2 year old Billy, intending to spending the weekend with an aunt in Connecticut, returning the following Sunday. Sunday, October 12th came and went with no sign of Charlie or the boys. In the first days following their disappearance, it became abundantly clear to Ruth that Charlie abducted the boys, vanishing into thin air. However, it wasn’t until later that she learned how much planning went into the kidnapping AND just how long this awful plan had been in motion.

Amber Hagerman was just 9 years old when she was abducted from an abandoned parking lot in Arlington, TX in January of 1996. Her mutilated body was found in a creek bed 4 days later. Though Amber’s killer has not yet been brought to justice, the AMBER Alert system which was created in Amber’s legacy, has saved over 2,000 abducted children since it’s inception following Amber’s death. On July 27, 1981 - 41 years ago today - Adam John Walsh was abducted from a Florida department store and tragically murdered at just 6 years old.

In the wake of their child's senseless death, John and Revé Walsh realized there were so many other children and families who needed help. Along with other child advocates, they founded the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC) as a private, non-profit organization to serve as the national resource center for information about missing and exploited children.

Adam's legacy has touched the lives of countless families through NCMEC since being founded in 1984. Our national toll-free hotline, 1-800-THE-LOST, has received more than 5 million calls. We’ve circulated billions of photos of missing children. We’ve assisted law enforcement in the recovery of more than 376,000 missing children thanks to constantly increasing and improving public awareness, training, laws, and technology.

Each year on the anniversary of his disappearance, we remember Adam by sharing his story and his parents wishes for NCMEC to turn tragedy into hope by helping as many families as we possibly can.

Zahra Baker was a 10 year old 2 time cancer survivor and amputee when she was reported missing by her father and step mother, Adam and Elisa Baker, on October 9, 2010. However, when parts of her body (including her prosthetic leg) were found dismembered, scattered and nearly completely decomposed just a few weeks later in late October/early November, it was clear that it had been much longer since Zahra was last seen alive. So what led to the brutal murder of this vibrant child & how did investigators find her killer?
