“Justice has been served.”

At 8:25 p.m. Thursday, Kenneth Eugene Smith was pronounced dead after his execution in the murder-for-hire slaying of Elizabeth Sennett nearly 35 years ago.
Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall cleared the execution to commence at 7:56 p.m. in the William C. Holman Correctional Facility in Atmore, his office said.
“Justice has been served,” Marshall said in a statement.
#Tonight, Kenneth Smith was put to death for the heinous act he committed over 35 years ago: the murder-for-hire slaying of Elizabeth Sennett, an innocent woman who was by all accounts a godly wife, a loving mother and grandmother, and a beloved pillar of her community.

The Huntsville City Council passed an ordinance Thursday amending the previous ordinance related to hands-free driving, a motion that attempts to clear the language on the law.

In sum, the ordinance states personnel with the Huntsville Police Department can’t pull a vehicle over for a possible hands-free infraction and use that as probable cause to actually look for other violations.
HPD asked for the proposal to be made.

Huntsvillian Nick Dunlap, who recently became the first amateur in 33 years to win on the PGA Tour, announced today he is turning professional and intends to accept PGA Tour membership.
The announcement came in a press conference on the University of Alabama campus.

“It was the easiest, hardest decision that I’ve ever had to make,” Dunlap said. “I was very fortunate that everyone had the same opinion about it, and my teammates were awesome and very supportive. It goes back to the family that Alabama has; they were very supportive and wanted me to chase my dreams.”
Dunlap, a sophomore at Alabama, won The American Express in La Quinta, Calif., last Sunday. He is the first player to win the U.S. Junior Amateur, U.S. Amateur and a PGA Tour event while still an amateur and is the second-youngest Tour winner since World War II (behind only Jordan Spieth).

Researchers at the University of Alabama in Huntsville are leading a NATO partnership to address emerging security challenges presented by quantum technologies.

Quantum computers exploit quantum phenomena to solve mathematical problems that are difficult or intractable for conventional computers, and these devices will someday be able to break many of the public-key cryptosystems currently in use, seriously compromising digital communications.
To counter these threats, the multi-year initiative, funded under the NATO Science for Peace and Security Programme, seeks to provide secure communications via classical and quantum technologies.

The Limestone County Water and Sewer Authority has lifted the boil order for the Ardmore area.
However the utility said Ardmore, South Giles, and Minor Hill customers are still under the order.
“… all the tanks in the system have substantially regained water.” the authority said. “While they are not full, we can see the path back to normal. This does not mean we are entirely out of the woods; we are still concerned about the soil contraction and expansion with the freeze/ thaw cycle and main breaks that can occur during those transitions.”

Not surprisingly with the ongoing growth in the area, Huntsville International Airport broke all previous passenger traffic records in 2023 marking its busiest year ever with more than 1.47 million flyers passing through the gates.

There were 1,473,629 passengers to be exact who traveled through Huntsville International (HSV) with an increase of 22.7 percent in traffic over 2022. The last highest year on record, 2019, saw 1,445,365 passengers traveling through the airport.
According to Port of Huntsville CEO Butch Roberts, several factors contributed to passenger traffic growth in the North Alabama airport. Much of the growth can be attributed to Huntsville becoming the largest city in the state of Alabama with good-paying jobs and a high standard of living that includes expendable income for leisure travel.

“It’s an honor,” Brady said. “Everyone there was deserving. To be there was humbling, but to get the opportunity to farm every day is humbling as well. We didn’t know if that would be possible. To be recognized as outstanding is icing on the cake.”

Alabama Crimson Tide sophomore Nick Dunlap of Huntsville did something Sunday that hasn’t been seen on the Professional Golf Association Tour in over three decades – win as an amateur.

Dunlap won the 2024 The American Express in the Coachella Valley by holding off some late charges to earn the $1,512,000 first-place check he won’t be able to cash because he’s an amateur and can’t retroactively turn professional.
Dunlap, 20, is the reigning U.S. Amateur champion and entered the tournament on a sponsor’s exemption. He shot a third-round 60 to take a three-shot lead, lost it on the first nine Sunday and then recovered. He sank a six-foot putt to clinch the trophy by one stroke over Christiaan Bezuidenhout.
