And on the last Wednesday of each month, Beneath the Underground features the “XX-centric Behavior” edition of our show, a deep focus on rad women in the arts. Beneath the Underground’s hosts, John Pietaro and Laurie Towers, are life-long New Yorkers entrenched in the indie arts scenes since the 1980s. Pietaro is a writer, spoken word artist, musician and labor activist. Staff writer of The NYC Jazz Record, he’s a contributing arts journalist to PleaseKillMe, The Wire, The Village Sun, AllAboutJazz and others. His most recent work is poetry/fiction collection A Bleeding in Black Leather (Uncollected Press/RAR, 2022). Towers is a publicist, musician, business owner, feminist activist, public speaker, writer and longtime host of the women's empowerment podcast She's Raising the Bar.
