On this 33rd Kashmiri Pandit Holocaust Day, we remember the atrocities suffered by the Kashmiri Pandit community during the 1990s. We honor the memory of those who lost their lives and pay tribute to the survivors who have had to endure the trauma of losing their homes and sanskritic civilisation and to till this date fight for their rights.

It is important to acknowledge and remember the suffering of all victims of genocide. We must work towards a future where all communities can live in peace and harmony, free from discrimination and violence. Let us honor the memory of the victims.

Most people believe that genocide, or the wholesale killing of particular groups of people, is a thing of the past because of the Holocaust for Jews and the N**i government, both of which came to an end more than 60 years ago. Sadly, given the status of the world today, genocide is still a real possibility. It's also crucial to remember that genocide extends beyond mass killings and causes terrible suffering for those who survive.

In just 100 days in 1994, about 800,000 people were slaughtered in Rwanda by ethnic Hutu extremists. They were targeting members of the minority Tutsi community, as well as their political opponents, irrespective of their ethnic origin.

The United Nations Genocide Convention defines genocide as "any of the following acts committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group, as such: killing members of the group; causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group; deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part; imposing measures intended to prevent births within the group; [and] forcibly transferring children of the group to another group.

Preventive interventions can halt the genocide process at any of these stages, but it is important to recognize that the stages do not always happen in a linear fashion and can occur concurrently. It is also important to recognize that the focal point of the process is the classification of individuals or groups, and that without this process, the other stages would not be possible.

It is also worth noting that societies are becoming increasingly susceptible to genocide as they adopt more and more violent practices. It is important for individuals and groups to be aware of the warning signs of genocide and to take action to prevent it from happening. These stages are not necessarily linear, and they can occur concurrently. Preventive interventions can be effective at any stage of the process to halt the progression towards genocide.

Oh dear Kashmir, take us in your arms, and let’s weep on the misery, the separation and the long forgotten pain together. Long before when terror knocked the doors of every Kashmiri Hindu household, Kashmir was once known as the epitome of happiness and harmony. However, now times are such that, the roads of despair and misery lead to Kashmir.
Next on, we have with us Mr. Chand Kaul, another testimony to the Genocide that happened in Kashmir. He is here to share with us the mournful tale of his father, who was shot dead by the militants and how in mere seconds his life came into the hands of death. Mr. Chand Kaul, also says that what happened with his father and all other Kashmiri Hindu families, wasn’t just fortuitous rather it was a well planned annihilation. All those who had to lose their lives in order save their families have served martyrdom and should be entitled for justice. He also says, the time post 1986 riots is nothing less than a nightmare, as everything was changed forever for every Kashmir Hindu.
Torn between the misery inflicted upon them and their misfortune, hear for yourself the story of a Kashmir Pandit who lost his life, in the name of Jihad. Tune into Archive #006, and earwitness, the Genocide of Kashmiri Hindus

“Everyone wants Kashmir, but no one wants Kashmiris.” Who are we lying to? Who are we hiding from? We all know the truth. Lives haven’t just been lost but, lives have been traded and slaughtered for the sake of Jihad. A day, in every Kashmiri Hindu’s life changed all of their lives forever and nothing remained the same.

Next we have with us, is Mr. Ramesh Chandra Kaul, who spent his early childhood and most of his adulthood in Shahkot which is now known as Shalipoora, a town in Kashmir. He tells us that, the life they led in Kashmir was nothing less than mental torture, because they have suffered humiliation and unabashed catcalling. He also says, that it was no difference back than Kashmir, because they have always felt alienated and rejected by the society. He explains, that he has seen death so closely that it gives him shiver whenever he recalls the incident of his neighbour, who was a naive land owner and one day his life came into the hands of death.

A life led in distress is at least better than a life not led at all says a Kashmiri Hindu. Life for Kashmiri Hindus have been just all about dread, misery and pain since 1989. Hear the tale of Genocide and the testimony of a Kashmiri Hindu’s real life story. Earwitness the immeasurable amount of pain Kashmiri Hindus went through on Archive #005.

As the night fell, the Kashmiri Hindu community became panic-stricken when the Valley began reverberating with the war-cries of Islamists. 1989, the dark year of every Kashmiri Hindu’s life. A year which took away everything from this community.

We are here with a new story, but same loss and pain, of a Kashmiri Hindu family who suffered misery and torture, and encountered misfortune. On our Archive #004 next we have Mr. Ramesh Kumar Pandita, who once used to be a native of Bhagat Pora in Kashmir, says, “we were alone, back then and we are alone even today.”

He is here to narrate his experience, of how terrorised he was that he had to hide himself in a husk for so many days, just to save himself from death. Also, how his father, Mr. Zind Lal Pandita and his brother-in-law Mr. Jagannath Pandita, were murdered to death. He has to say, “We the Kashmiri Hindus never wanted to vamoose from Kashmir, but what would you do if you were dragged out of your own house, laid on the road to see your family and community burn into ashes.”

Tune into Archive #004, and hear for yourself the painful tale of a Kashmiri household, whose only fault was that, they were Kashmiri Hindus.

“The screams and cries of the Kashmiri Hindus have always been silenced. We have been silenced since 1989, when the Kashmiri Hindu lives were dragged to death, to 32 years post the travesty, when we were questioned about our identity” -says a Kashmiri Hindu himself.

Our third witness to Genocide is Mr. Anil Raina, whose brother became one of the Victim of Genocide and how his life came into the hands of death. Mr. Anil Raina was a resident of Dandi Khas, a town in Kashmir, has to say ’although 1989 became the dark year of all our lives, however the conspiracies to kill each one of us was long planned.’

Hear the miserable and gut wrenching tale of Mr. Anil Raina’s elder brother, and witness how the assassination of his brother left the entire family traumatised. Witness the testimony of an innocent Kashmiri Hindu who’s death is nothing less than a martyrdom for his Homeland, Kashmir. Mr. Anil Raina also says, life has been everything but easy, ever since.
