Happy Birthday, Oko Drammeh

Today, Kambiyaa TV celebrates the incredible life and achievements of Oko Drammeh, a distinguished promoter of African music. According to the Los Angeles Times, Oko Drammeh has produced more concerts and festivals featuring African musicians than anyone else in the world. His immense contributions as a disk jockey, producer, and ethnomusicologist have significantly influenced the global appreciation of African music.

Oko Drammeh's journey began in The Gambia, where he worked as a disk jockey for radio stations, nightclubs, and social events. His career took a significant turn when he became the producer and promotions manager for the Gambian band Ifang Bondi. In 1981, he moved to Holland and soon realized the unique potential of African music on the world stage. This insight led to the launch of the African Music Festival in 1983, which became one of the largest African music events globally, attracting over 10,000 attendees annually.

Under Oko's visionary leadership, the festival featured legendary artists such as Miriam Makeba, Osibisa, and Angelique Kidjo, among others. The festival's success spread beyond Europe, debuting in America in 1997 and later reaching audiences in China and Japan. His efforts earned him numerous awards and recognition, including a certificate of honor from the California Senate and support from the Dutch Ministry of Culture and the City of Delft.

Oko's impact extended beyond festivals. He introduced the "Night of the Griots" concerts in the US, showcasing traditional West African music and fostering cultural exchange. In 2000, he founded Soto Koto Concert Management, providing essential support services to artists and event organizers. His Hollywood-based company and the Soto Koto Band have produced several acclaimed albums, blending African rhythms with modern and ancient musical influences.

In addition to his musical achievements, Oko Drammeh has produced documentaries for the BBC, the list goes on.
