Cry of the Banshee (1970)
Directed by Gordon Hessler

“Monomaniacal witch hunter Lord Edward Whitman (Vincent Price) cruelly persecutes the peasants in his corner of Elizabethan England, manufacturing charges and meting out punishment without regard to justice. While trying to wipe out a coven of witches, he fails to take into account the possibility that real witches might have real power. He is unprepared when Oona (Elisabeth Bergner), the head of the coven, transforms a trusted member of Whitman's household into a vehicle of demonic vengeance.”

This turned 30 yesterday! Best described as Darkthrone’s 2nd black metal album, Fenriz claims its only the first since Blaze still had plenty of death metal parts holding it together. Arguably splitting hairs with the distinction but the overall point is there. A Blaze in the Northern Sky was Darkthrone stripping down their sound with the intent of making a proper ice-cold black metal album. They didn’t have the time to make the album only black metal though so, they borrowed a lot of ideas and riffs from their at the time shelved Goatlord album, warped then into a more black metal sound and that was Blaze. A 10/10!
For Under a Funeral Moon they wanted to make a statement by releasing an album with 0 death metal influence, a much more “true” black metal album. The results are an album that’s even colder than it’s predecessor. Even the list of musical influences for the album is stripped back. For the most part you’ll mainly hear total Bathory worship and the Vader (Necrolust demo) style riffing pops up a few times. You’ll hear a good bit of Mayhem (Live in Leipzig) going on as well, mainly Freezing Moon, in tracks like Crossing the Triangle of Flames. This is also one of the only albums (as well as T.H.) Darkthrone made that doesn’t seem to have any Celtic Frost worship. Fenriz was obviously horrified by this fact and when he made Panzerfaust shortly after he made sure to include gratuitous amounts of Frost.
I’ve always seen Under a Funeral Moon as the contrarians favourite Darkthrone album. No doubt an absolute screamer with songs like To Walk the Infernal Fields and the title track being total classics but there’s definitely some songs that are better than others. Unholy Black Metal is just Zephyrous rewriting the title track and his minimalist Inn I De Dype Skogens Fabn, despite inspiring what Fenriz would end up doing with TH, falls a bit flat. Zephyrous left the band after this album so I imagine he might have just ran out of inspiration at the time. But that’s imo and this is a top tier black metal album. And I have much love for Zephyrous, the entire first section of In the Shadow of the Horns was all his work!
What’s your fav Darkthrone album?

Trollhunter (2010)
Directed by André Øvredal

“While investigating reports of illegal poaching, three student filmmakers encounter a man (Otto Jespersen) who slays trolls for the Norwegian government.”

Watched this a few times over the years. Admittedly not phenomenal or anything but definitely something unique and interesting. The wild, snow covered Norwegian landscape is the real star of the show here. Mountains, forests, cold frosty winds, grey frozen vistas. There’s a lot of beauty in this film and the found-footage approach further adds to the cold but cosy atmosphere. Plot wise there’s not too much going on but the premise and filmmaking is good enough to make this worth a watch.

Also we have reached 1000 followers on this (Instagram) page now so cheers to you all!

Byzantium (2012)
Directed by Neil Jordan

Here’s a film I was going to include in the last issue but never got round to. Byzantium is Neil Jordan’s return to vampire cinema a couple of decades after his classic Interview with the Vampire. Byzantium thematically takes a different turn from Jordan’s first take on the vampire genre and focussed around the troubled life and tricky relationship between a mother and daughter who happen to be vampires. Clara, the mother vampire who has lived for 200 years is confident and cold and makes a living as a s*x worker (a job she was forced into from a young age before she was turned). The 2 woman try to get by moving town to town and sustaining a low profile as they are being hunted by fellow (male) vampires who believe the “gift” of vampirism should not be given to women.

There’s quite a lot going on in this film thematically, specifically to do with feminism and the patriarchy but as well as romantic love and love between family. It’s a film for essays to be written about which, is why I initially never got round to doing a write up for it. Overall though,
I thought this was a great film with lots of atmosphere, striking imagery and its British seaside town environment is a very classic setting that lends itself well to the the ambiguous style the film sets for itself.

Pentagram (Chile) - Demo 1 (1987)

Now that the big issue 4 promo cycle has died down I should probably start posting about films and music again. So going to start by talking about one of my favourite demos. Pentagram’s inventively named Demo 1!
Anyone that’s ever paid attention to the Thrash Fridays content I’ve done in the past will know that I go mad for extreme thrash that can’t decide if it’s early death metal or first wave black metal. If the extreme thrash band also put out music between 1984-1990 and hailed from South America then it’s almost guaranteed to be fu***ng fantastic in my eyes. Pentagram easily fits in to this description.
I have to be honest here, I’ve barely checked out the rest of Pentagram’s back catalog but when a band has a perfect release sometimes that’s all you care to listen to.

Demo 1 by Pentagram is 3 songs of feral, early death metal with plenty of thrash holding it all together. The whole demo has a consistency and general tightness that is quite unique. No matter what speeds the band is jumping between there’s always this locked-in feeling of groove persisting throughout that is generally just really satisfying to listen to. I think drummer Eduardo Topelberg deserves a lot of credit here, he never overplays and stays firmly in the pocket, serving the song yet still sounding fu***ng tasty. The guitar style is very of the era, a bit of an evil riff salad, similar to the Brazilian scene of that time but with a very viscous delivery. Most importantly it all immaculately locks in with the drums. The main riff on Spell of The Pentagram is particular stand out!

With a band this tight you could probably stick any old singer on this and it would sound good but vocalist Anton Reisenegger went above and beyond on this and performed one my favourite vocal performances to date. He walks the line between clean shouted thrash vocals and guttural, roaring death metal vocals and the result is amazing. This c**t sounds utterly ravenous. What a band man

Been rewatching the whole saga, this one’s Marmite but it’s probably my favourite after the first one. Some truly gruesome parasite horror to enjoy 😱🦑

Prometheus: Directed by Ridley Scott. With Noomi Rapace, Michael Fassbender, Charlize Theron, Idris Elba. Following clues to the origin of mankind, a team finds a structure on a distant moon, but they soon realize they are not alone.

Happy New Year! I never got round to doing a big New Year post so I’d just like to say a big thanks to everybody who has bought a copy of the new zine and especially those of you that bought multiple copies/issues! We love you all and you are great!
We still have lots of copies left so I’m going to be posting sneak peaks over the next couple of weeks showing off some of the art done by our contributors.
Our front cover was done by Iona and it looks very sick! This is Iona’s second time collaborating with us and she’s submitted several pieces of art you can find in the pages of issue 4. Thanks!
The back cover art was done by and also looks class! Thanks to you as well!

The Clovehitch Killer (2018) - Duncan Skiles

“A picture-perfect family is torn apart after Tyler finds a cache of disturbing images in his father's possession. He begins to suspect that the man he trusts most in the world may be responsible for the murder of 13 girls ten years prior.”

Decent thriller if you’re bored of rewatching Mindhunter for the 5th time and need something similar.

Today is the winter solstice! That means that today is the shortest and darkest day of the year. An absolutely perfect day to listen to the sweet sound of Wampyric Black Metal! Conveniently we’ve actually done a whole retrospective on that exact thing in the most recent issue of our zine. Wow! You can pick it up now, link in bio!
We also have interviews with Wampyric Black Metal artists and
Why not listen to some of that today? Winter Lantern released an album very recently- “Hexen Lied”, maybe start with that! Then you can check out the recently released Celestial Sword split with Nightmare Ecstasy!

Hello! Thanks to everybody who has picked up a copy so far, we’ve still got loads!
I need to make a wee correction though. On the cover we have credited our interview with original member from Von, Goat as a Von interview. Goat is no longer in Von and instead his project is actually Von Goat! This was a daft error on my (Liam’s) part so apologies to Goat! We still discussed a lot of his time in the original Von as well as his other projects Sixx and Von Goat. But it’s best to clear this up!
Cheers!

The Night Stalker (1972)
Directed by John Llewellyn Moxey

“After several high-profile newspapers fire him for his difficult attitude, investigative journalist Carl Kolchak (Darren McGavin) finds a job following the police beat for a small Las Vegas publication. When Carl discovers a series of dead showgirls drained of blood with bite marks on their necks, the police hesitate to take the case any further, and his boss (Simon Oakland) wants nothing to do with the story, leading Carl to believe there may be a real vampire prowling the city streets.”
