Everything Is Negotiable!
To become a successful negotiator, make your motto "Everything is negotiable." Before you can learn strategies and tactics, you've got to develop a mind-set that has you ready to negotiate at all times. You must learn to consider virtually everything negotiable. You also need to increase your willingness to engage others in negotiation. Your world is filled with signs that say "Negotiators Not Welcome." These signs come in the form of price tags, policy statements, disclaimers ("The manage- ment is not responsible for..."), and lines like "That's my final offer.. take it or leave it!" Open a newspaper and you'll see classified ads with prices followed by the word "firm." Call that seller after an item has gone unsold for a week and you'll find that "firm" price has become
quite squishy, or highly negotiable!
In addition to these signs, daily life presents all of us with a constant stream of situations that discourage negotiation by portraying us as rude or troublesome for trying to improve our situations. How often have you accepted a table near the door in a restaurant because you were hesitant to ask for a more desirable spot? Think about the time you checked into a hotel and learned that the exact accommodations you reserved were unavailable. Did you ever ask for compensation? Probably not.
As a student, how many times did you accept a grade you didn't deserve because you didn't want to cause a stir by questioning it?
Been a successful negotiator means you've got to question the signs around you. it means not automatically accepting the status quo because it's the policy. Being a successful negotiator means always been willing to ask for more or better when you're entitled to it - or even if you're not...........
