It’s and I want to share some helpful information as we go into the RSV season! Babies who were born prematurely or who have underdeveloped lungs (like Samuel) are at a higher risk of developing severe respiratory syncytial virus, or . If you aren’t familiar with RSV, it’s a common, highly contagious seasonal virus that can cause a mild respiratory infection in many babies. So, during RSV season I work with Samuel’s doctors and take extra precautions to keep him safe.

I always keep a close eye for any sign or symptom of RSV, which can include coughing or wheezing that does not stop, fast or troubled breathing, flared nostrils and/or increased chest retractions when trying to breathe, bluish color around the mouth or fingernails and fever. Parents of babies exhibiting symptoms should seek medical attention immediately.

There is currently no specific treatment for RSV disease once contracted, which means prevention is critical. It is important for all parents, especially those of high-risk babies, to understand preventative measures to help protect their children from contracting RSV!
