Filipp Kabanyayev // An artist who can colour everything with light
“I have always loved nature. I realised that the workings of nature are rooted in the fundamental processes of the universe itself. This deeper understanding enriches my connection to nature and fuels my artistic expression.
Painting with light is like illuminating the real world with different colours, capturing
moments in a continuous image.”

Where science meets art…
Science and art rely on observation and synthesis: taking what is seen and creating something new. Our society could hardly exist without either, but when they come together, our culture is enriched, sometimes unexpectedly.
To many, science embodies the rational and analytical end of human experience, while art comes from the empathic and expressive. Science can prove truths, while art can only make us feel them.
These differences are compounded as science becomes responsible for the official narrative of our lives through medicine and genetics. At the same time, contemporary art retains a mystical ‘outsider’ status, both in its intellectual obscurity and the inflated prices of the international art market. Nevertheless, where science meets art and the two work together, the result can be extraordinarily productive as horizons are broadened and gaps in our understanding of both fields are filled.

Edward Shuster and Claudia Moseley // “Light transcends illumination to affect transformations of consciousness directly. It operates across multiple dimensions: informational, perceptual, expressive, conceptual, etc. We always want the artwork to be aesthetically experienced, creating a dynamic and perceptual response through vision. Then, this evocation naturally extrapolates into deeper engagements because of the nature of light itself.
Many works mobilise the passage from
daylight to night. By day, the artwork
interfaces with the ambient light of the space, enhancing the complexity and dimensional depth of the experience of light to produce a luminosity that helps extend the mind into the environment. By night, the interaction inverses as the lenses interface with bespoke LEDs to project a composition of spectrality that brings the environment to a place of interiority.”

Nam June Paik’s “TV Buddha” (1976) and “Kaldor Candle” (1996) are iconic works that explore the relationship between technology and spirituality. “TV Buddha” features a wooden Maitreya Buddha from the Kaldor collection, sitting in front of a TV showing a live feed of itself, creating a loop that blurs the line between object and subject. “Kaldor Candle,” made for John Kaldor, continues this exploration using video feedback. Paik’s innovative use of real-time video loops influenced leading conceptual artists of the 1970s, including Bill Viola, Dan Graham, and Mike Parr.
Art & Technology: A Dynamic Duo Art continually pushes the boundaries of technology, while tech provides artists with innovative tools and mediums. This symbiotic relationship reshapes artistic movements and broadens the horizons of human expression.

The Tokyo Metropolitan Teien Art Museum, built in 1933, was originally the home of Prince Yasuhiko Asaka and Princess Nobuko. It’s a great example of Art Deco architecture, heavily inspired by the French artist Henri Rapin. Many famous French artists contributed to its design, like René Lalique, who created beautiful glasswork, and the Daum company, which made the stylish light fixtures. The museum’s unique history and special design make it a standout cultural site in Tokyo.

A designer who creates drapes inspired by the visions of her dreams You say that peace means liberation for you. Do you believe that the collections you present reflect that? Yes, I want to keep the process as transparent and honest as possible, from sourcing the fabrics to draping and finishing. I don’t just want to make stuff that instantly goes viral without substance....

In this issue of Jam Today, we walk through the valleys of Spiti, the cold desert where trees are red, and the sky is deep blue, which features beautiful monasteries. In Dharamshala, we meet Sarika Locho, a Thangka painter whose journey started with the help of the Holiness of the Dalai Lama. Through the route of Dharamshala, we travel to Palampur and meet Sushant Sankhyan, a muralist who is famously known as ‘Find Me on Walls’ all across Himachal. You can see his presence in most of the walls of cafes and travel vans in the areas of Himachal.
