🌍 Governments and researchers around the globe are being called upon to strengthen and accelerate preparations for the next pandemic by the World Health Organisation (WHO).

WHO—alongside the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations—are emphasising the importance of expanding research to include entire families of pathogens than can infect humans, as well as focusing on individual pathogens.

In a report released at this year’s Global Pandemic Preparedness Summit in Brazil, WHO urges countries to adopt a wider approach. This ultimately aims to create broadly applicable knowledge, tools and countermeasures that can be quickly adapted to emerging threats.

⚡️ Involving community healthcare staff in the development and implementation of digital technology can be the key to unlocking the new government’s ambition of a Neighbourhood Service and moving care closer to home, according to a new report from The King’s Fund.

Furthering the digital transformation agenda in general practice, pharmacies, community trusts, and care providers can help:

➡️ reduce the number of patients accessing over-burdened hospitals;
➡️ improve patient experience and outcomes; and
➡️ people with ongoing care needs to live independent lives.

However, the report says that the current use of technology in community care mirrors the silos in the wider system, which is frustrating patients.

🚨 New research shows that a series of public interventions that help reduce the risk of dementia could help save England as much as £4bn by reducing dementia diagnoses and supporting people to live longer lives.

In the study—which was published in The Lancet Healthy Longevity—researchers estimated the impact of the measures on dementia rates and related cost, including gains to quality adjusted life years (QALY). The steps taken include:

🧂 reducing sugar and salt in food production;
🌲 introducing low emission zones; and
🍺 minimum alcohol unit pricing.

🟢 In what will be another huge stride towards sustainability targets, Manchester University Foundation Trust’s (MFT) Trafford General Hospital is set to become the first retrofitted carbon net zero inpatient hospital in the UK thanks to £18.9m of Public Sector Scheme funding.

🦖 Approximately £10m will be used to revamp the hospital’s energy infrastructure, which is thought to be more than 50 years old. Effectively ending the hospital’s reliance on fossil fuel natural gas, MFT leaders will invest in modern low-carbon air and water source heat pump systems.

🥇 The move represents the first time an existing NHS hospital has upgraded its entire energy system to completely decarbonise energy at the inpatient site.

💷 New chancellor of the exchequer Rachel Reeves has announced that strike action could be set to end after the government reached an agreement with the British Medical Association (BMA) to put a new pay offer forward to junior doctors.

The new offer consists of an extra 4.05% for the 2023/24 pay year on top of the previously awarded 8.8% — this will be backdated to April 2023.

The government has also accepted the recommendations from the Review Body on Doctors’ and Dentists’ Remuneration (DDRB) for 2024/25, which works out as an average increase of more than 8% — this will be backdated to April 2024.

Other commitments from the government include:

➡️ streamlining the way junior doctors report when they have worked extra hours;
➡️ reforming the current system of junior doctor training and rotational placements;
➡️ changing the name of ‘junior doctors’ to ‘resident doctors’ from September; and
➡️ asking the DDRB to consider in its annual recommendations the overall reward package and career progression for junior doctors.
