Hey There History Fans! Here is an ‘Archaeology in the News’ for you: In a Quarry located southeast of London a hull of a ship from the Elizabethan Era was discovered in April of 2022. This is a rare find as there are few ships that have been discovered from the time. Wood is a material that will quickly degrade or rot and therefore nothing is normally left behind. Chances are that there was a layer of sediment that protected the hull of this ship from rotting away. Archaeologists used the wood to date the ship stating that the trees used to build the ship were cut down between the years 1558 and 1580. The period is right in the middle when shipbuilding was going through a change, they were replacing the overlapping of hull planks with carvel style of building. The ship discovered had the carvel style. This find is important in that it might lead to more information as to how the English were navigating the sea. This was also a time of rapid expansion and trade.
