Reporters Without Borders (RSF) has issued a statement calling on authorities in Banjul to drop charges of "interference with witnesses" after a report that journalist Bakary Mankajang was released on bail on 23/09 after being held 72hrs in the Anti-Crime Unit in Banjulinding.

His Excellency President Adama Barrow and his delegation have arrived in the Tunisian capital, Tunis, for the Eight Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD8).
The President was received at the Airport by the Tunisian Prime Minister, Her Excellency Najla Bouden.

The conference will bring together African leaders and their partners to discuss development objectives geared toward integrating Africa into the emerging global chain of research, innovation, technology and science.

ACU APPREHENDS MAN SUSPECTED OF CATTLE STEALING, ACCOMPLICES ON THE RUN.

Two men are on the run whilst a third man is in custody for conspiracy to commit felony.
Personnel of the Anti Crime Unit were on a routine patrol recently in Brusubi when they signaled a speeding Volkswagen Taxi to stop but the driver failed to stop and after a hot pursue, the driver alighted and took took to his heels with a 2nd person whilst a 3rd man was arrested at the scene. After a thorough search of the vehicle, two goats and a sheep were found in the trunk and their mouths gagged.

The Ivorian government has remained silent after more than 50 of its soldiers were detained by Malian authorities. The Ivorian soldiers were working for a contracting company of the UN mission in Mali, however the Malian government has referred to them as "mercenaries," a move which could exacerbate tensions between the two West African nations. The soldiers arrived on Sunday in Mali on two aircraft which were carrying weapons and other military equipment. UN mission spokesperson Olivier Salgado, says the Ivorian soldiers "are not part of one of the MINUSMA contingents" but have been deployed in Mali for several years "on behalf of one of their contingents." How do you think the Malian and Ivorian governments should resolve this issue?

2 Gambians Died, 8 Rescued In Migrant Boat Accident

Two Gambians have died and eight rescued in a migrant boat accident in Kafountine in Casamance on 26th June 2022.

“Latest information from our High Commission in Dakar indicate that the pirogue caught fire, causing the death of several people. Ninety two (92) survivors were rescued, including eight (8) Gambians, eight (8) Guineans, four (4) Nigerians, three (3) Bissau-Guineans and sixty nine (69) Senegalese. The deceased include ten (10) Bissau-Guineans, two (2) Gambians, with the remaining being Senegalese,” a statement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said today.

The incident occurred when the boat carrying the migrants on its way to Europe sank off the coast in southern Senegal, the statement added.

The Gambia’s diplomatic Mission in Dakar confirmed that the search for the identities of the missing migrants is still ongoing and the Mission is in-touch with the Senegalese authorities, according to the statement.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs prays for God’s infinite mercy and forgiveness on the souls of the departed and further prays that God grants the families the fortitude to bear the loss.

Clarification And Public Update On The Planned Renovation And Remodeling Of Independence Stadium

It it worthy to note that following receipt of the notice from the GFF, of the suspension of the Independence Stadium from hosting matches, the Ministry of Youth and Sports swiftly convened a meeting of key stakeholders to discuss the matter and to map out the way forward. A task force was formed to do a comprehensive assessment to bring the stadium to the CAF acceptable standards. MOTWI used the assessment report to develop designs and Bill of Quantity for the work. Upon submission of its report and BOQ, the relevant Ministries have been engaged to do the needful. It is however important to note that because Government operates on an annual budget, a none budgeted work that will cost the state more than 100 millions Dalasis can be challenging and doable only after proper consultation.
Nonetheless, due to the importance attached to this, Government has since indicated availability of funds, pending fulfilment of public procurement processes – a stage we currently on.
We want to inform the public that the renovation and remodeling of the stadium has since been tendered and as per GPPA approval and requirements, closing of tender was on 24th June, 2022. This week the Contract Committee has done the assessment of the bids and submitted the report and recommended contractors to GPPA for approval. Once that is secured, contract will be awarded and work will start immediately.

The Ministry wants to assure the general public, especially sports enthusiasts that the Government is committed to doing an everlasting fix to the stadium’s perennial disqualification from hosting matches, which is largely due to none comprehensive assessment and cosmetic renovation that secure only one match or seasonal approval.
