🌊 Hello July! 🌊

As we welcome the new month, we are reminded of the power and beauty of the sea that surrounds us here in the US Virgin Islands.

July is often the hottest month of the year in the Northern Hemisphere, a prime time for summer activities like swimming, barbecues, and vacations. However, this July, our beautiful waters bring with them a reminder of nature’s force, with Hurricane Beryl making her presence felt and another storm on the horizon.

🌴☀️
This year, the waters are exceptionally warm, a signal that we must stay vigilant and prepared. Warm waters often mean more intense storms, so it’s crucial for our community to stay informed and ready.

Stay safe and stay salty! 💪🏽🌊

Imagine a creature so mesmerizing in appearance that its intrusion has silently become one of the most pressing environmental challenges in their invasive range.

Meet the lionfish—a creature that, despite its stunning appearance, is far from benign. Originally native to the Indo-Pacific region, lionfish have found their way into new waters, establishing a stronghold in the Atlantic Ocean, Gulf of Mexico, Caribbean, and Mediterranean Sea. How did this happen, and why should we be concerned?

Lionfish, with their striking venomous spines and flamboyant fins, are not your typical invaders. However, their entrance into these delicate ecosystems has set off an ecological alarm. Native to the other side of the world, lionfish boast an absence of natural predators in these new territories, allowing their population to explode uncontrollably. Their voracious appetite, coupled with prolific reproductive capabilities, has turned them into a formidable threat to local marine life.

In their invasive conquest, lionfish outcompete native species for food and habitat, upsetting the delicate balance that sustains these ecosystems. Their presence not only jeopardizes the survival of indigenous marine life but also poses a direct threat to coral reefs, one of the most fragile and vital components of our oceans.

So, as we embark on the journey of lionfish hunting, let's remember that our pursuit is not just about the thrill of the chase; it's a crucial effort to protect and restore the delicate equilibrium of our oceans.

🌊🤿 It is often said that necessity is the mother of invention, and nowhere is this more evident than in the world of scuba diving! 🌊🤿

When faced with the challenge of communicating underwater, divers developed an entire language of hand signals to ensure safety and coordination. From signaling “OK” to alerting your buddy about a sighting of marine life, these gestures are crucial for every dive.

What’s your favorite or most frequently used hand signal? 👌🏽🐢🤌🏽
