..$200,000. If you see a sponsor out there... If I win, they give me $200,000. If I lose, they don't give me a penny. They can keep the track or the prize money.' "

"People want to be involved in this race. They're already finding ways to do it. We're giving them right until the week before to hit that 18 number."

The race will see a maximum of 36 entries.

"The reason I did 36 is very simple. I'm a Vegas guy, I love to gamble. There's 36 numbers on a roulette wheel without the greens. That's some pretty good odds.
Somebody can lay down $200,000 and walk away with a track that we're asking $9.4 million for. It's probably the best odds I've ever seen out there."

"I'm hoping there's some fun people out there who want to take a chance on this.
Enter a driver, do a little partnership or whatever."

"There isn't a race out there in the world that I know of that pays this much."

"The haulers cost more than $200,000. There's 50-100 racers out there who could legitimately win this. When you race at these large half mile tracks, a lot of times it's follow the leader. Let's call it like it is."

"At Huset's Speedway, not a chance. It's like Terry McCarl said, 'It's like racing a jet fighter in a gymnasium.' Anybody can win that race on the high banked 3/8 mile track."

"It isn't a deal where somebody says, 'Donny Schatz or Tony Stewart is in it! We don't have a chance.' They all know that's bu****it at this track. 24 cars out there, four wide, anvbody can win it."

"I get chills, thinking about this race starting. We are praying to God that we get..."

2019 - Knoxville Raceway in Knoxville, IA - Flagman Doug Clark (photo by Wade Aunger)

"This concentrated stare from this old pair of eyes has literally launched 10,000 races.

"Looking looking looking," cries Tony Bokhoven over the Knoxville Raceway loudspeakers.

The green flag in this man's weathered hand flies majestically through the air.

With a flick of his wrist he unleashes 21,000 horsepower.\n\nYou don't mess with the starts on his watch, less'n you'll be put back a row or worse.

He's the world's most famous dirt track starter.

What he hasn't seen, needn't be seen.

Who he hasn't flagged might not compare to who he has.

He's had to govern the best on the planet - Kinser, Swindell, Wolfgang, Blaney, Haudenschild, Shaffer, Meyers, Jacobs, Vogler, Gordon, Stewart, Schatz, Jackson, Tatnell, McCarl, Lasoski, Brown and so many more.

Their next generations too. And now the new breed of Larson, Kahne, Sweet, Eliason, Haudenschild, Gravel, Schuchart, Allen, Madsens, Abreu, McCarl and hundreds and hundreds of others.

On Saturday nights he's the guy who herds the horsepower heroes into order.

But on a Friday night, when I took this shot, he's at a tiny high banked 1/6th mile oval just out of Knoxville called English Creek Speedway watching like everyone else through the safety fence. Watching his grandsons.

With a booming and raspy laugh Doug Clark has an immediately recognisable presence and a wicked sense of humour.

He's been there, done that, and stood shoulder to shoulder, gunnel to gunnel with the greatest of all time, using his checkered flag as the backdrop for the photo.

The old guys, the experienced dudes and the new kids know only too well how it's played.

You don't mess with Doug.

Ask Skip Jackson and he'll tell you the guy he was most happy to meet at the end of Saturday night was this guy.

Because it meant you were standing with him in Victory Lane.

Or as Knoxville Raceway call it "the greatest right hand turn in Sprintcar racing" as you manoeuvre your feature winning car first right then left under the framework on to that winning stage.

"Hehehehehehehehe," he chuckles loudly when I joke with him.

He's always friendly to me. Always has time for a chat.

I'm standing there, putting on a poker face, while my brain tries to wrangle in a silly grin as I try and play down who I'm talking to.

His son Justin Clark is one of my favourite people at Knoxville too.

He's inherited his Dad's sense of humour and his love of racing - and maybe a cold drink on a hot night too.

They hail from South Dakota but nobody seems to pay no mind.

The Clark's are as Knoxville as the giant safety fence that circles the arena.

As Knoxville as that huge ass American flag that flutters powerfully over turn one.

As Knoxville as....well as Knoxville as a Doug Clark checkered flag that's what." Wade Alex Unger

Matt Richard, "Ran under his flags for years and he is a good friend. One of the best for sure."

Terry Dozark, "The best."

I know of the first entry. Are there others?

"I suspect it going to be one of those things were everybody is waiting to see what everybody else does. Waiting to see who's coming in and what their competition is going to be."

"I do suspect it might take a little while to get it all in. I hope we get to 18 soon because then I can start making my deals with vendors and selling the sponsorships."

"The Outlaws couldn't be more excited. They're bringing up their officiating team.
They're also bringing their announcers and they're going to broadcast the race on their pay-per-view deal. We're trying to work on a TV rights deal Where somebody can film this and document it and mavbe have it live on television."

"We're doing all this stuff in the background. We're really going to make this a top notch, class 1 race. And make sure everybody walks away knowing there was no funny business going on."

'I have no say in who wins this race or disqualifications. I'm not even holding the funds. We're turning everything over to professionals. It will be the most legit race out there, ever. It has to be because this is a big prize, they're racing for."

I Race teams react to Huset's giveaway

What's the response from the teams?

"At first nobody believed it. Now, everybody believes it. You got half the people that are negative Nancys that are saying, 'There's no way in hell they're going to get 18 entries.' "

"Then, you got the other half that are positive and love it. Saying, 'S**t, they'll hit 36 with no problem.' I don't know where it lands. But, it's out there and it's real"

2019 - The Huset's Speedway Hall of Fame Committee is proud to announce the Class of 2019 and its five new inductees. The 22nd Annual Huset's Speedway Induction Ceremony and Reunion will be held on Sunday, July 21st at the Nordstrom-Johnson Building on the W.H. Lyons Fairgrounds in Sioux Falls, SD. The social will begin at 1pm and the induction ceremony will begin at 3pm.

This event is free and open to the public and will give former racers and fans a chance to swap stories, enjoy memories from days gone by, see old and restored race cars while we honor the Class of 2019. There will be numerous vintage and restored race cars on display, Bill Lev will have his gigantic display of pictures and memorabilia and all the inductees will have their own display of pictures, trophies, old t-shirts and more.

The Nordstrom-Johnson Building on the Fairgrounds is just north of the main grandstands and the ceremony will have a cash bar with water, soft drinks, beer and mixed drinks. Doors will open at noon and will be a very enjoyable time for fans, young and old alike.

The Class of 2019 consists of Chad Meyer, Rob Ristesund, Gene Brudigan, Keith Frantsen and Chuck Fee.

Meyer won the 2002 Huset's Speedway 410 track championship and garnered 30 total feature wins at Huset's, 18 of those wins came in a 410 sprint and 12 came in a 360 sprint. Ristesund was a car owner and driver for five years before trading in his helmet for a typewriter. Rob has covered auto racing for over 35 years, 30 of those were at Huset's Speedway, writing for regional and national publications, with 20 of those years for the Sioux Falls Argus Leader. Rob was also a member of the Huset's Hall of Fame committee for 15 years. Brudigan was a popular competitor at Huset's that made the trip from his home in Nebraska every Sunday in the mid to late 70s and well into the 80s. Gene picked up eight wins at the track, along with two top-five finishes in season points and the attendance award in 1986. Fransten claimed the 1983 sprint car championship and claimed checkered flags on 11 separate occasions. Fee was one of the most loyal and intense competitors in Huset's Speedway history during the early days at the track. His presence was felt on and off the track as a competitor and contributor.

Be sure to join us on Sunday, July 21st at the Nordstrom-Johnson building on the W.H. Lyon's Fairgrounds beginning at 1pm, for the 22st Annual Huset's Speedway Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony and Reunion. It's free and open to the public and both north and south entrances will be open with plenty of parking. Hope to see you there.

Chuck Brennan on The Race

Which brings us to The Race. This is the most brilliant and bold, bold idea.
What's been the reaction from the race teams? I'm assuming you've talked to
some or them.

"I have. As it came out, people were just completely shocked, floored and didn't
believe it," Chuck Brennan told RacingNews.co.

"But, then as they started seeing the re-branding and legitimacy, that changed. This
wasn't something we put together overnight."

The track was formerly labeled as Badlands Motor Speedway. Last week, that
signage came down and the tamillar Huset's speedway signage was resurrected.

We had a deal with the previous owners. we agreed to a price and everything was locked and loaded. I thought the track was sold. And that was the 6th time we've
been here. We've been to closing 6 times with various groups."

"Something has blown up or they hadn't been able to get their funding. Or they offered an amount and at the Ilth hour, they changed the amount. This was kind of
the last straw."

"At the time, my accountant and attorney said, 'You just need to tear this thing down and give it back to the Bureau of Land Management. Make it a wildlife sanctuary,
take the tax write-off. Write-off the $18 million you spent on it and just the tax break.'

"That's real money. So, that's why I put that out there. I was dead serious about that. It was the plan and I agreed to doing that. We were going to start tearing it out this Spring."

Brennan stated that if the track was not sold by the end of 2018, he'd have to tear down the track. Demolition equipment appeared at the track earlier this year but was later removed.

"The official race track of summer"

June 14, 2019, 7:00 pm Central

This information IS NOT YET OFFICIAL and we are working diligently with our legal team to release all of the official rules, processes and procedures via www.husets.com on or before Wednesday, June 19th at 5pm Central.

With that being sod, this is the first time ever in ANY facet of the racing world that such an event has taken place and we wanted to take some time to give you an outline of a very special race that we hope to run on Tuesday, August 13, 2019 w Brandon South Dakota.

We have been aggressively trying to get the Speedway sold and in the hands of a great new ownership group to bring this iconic venue that was opened in 1957 back to life for the city of Brandon, the race fans, the race teams, and auto racing in general.

After purchasing the track in 2015 from the Rubin family, we did a complete re-model and re-build of everything investing over $18,000,000 into the project and opening for a full season in 2016 with nearly 40 events that included racing, concerts, monster trucks, moto-cross, and more. The birth of Badlands Motor Speedway was the talk of the racing world and brought new life to this legendary facility.

2017 the speedway was put on the market for approximately $9,000,000 which was around half of our investment. We have agreed to sell the facility several times and agreed to terms, but in every circumstance the deal fell thru as the buyers/posers were all talk and no dough!

That brings us to what will be the most epic race in US Dirt Racing History with literally the largest racing purse that we have ever been able to find in the history of United States Racing. Even the Daytona 500, the Indy 500 and the Kentucky Derby normally have the top prize clock in at less than 02,000,000!

On Tuesday, August 13, 2019, just days after the infamous Knoxville Nationals m Knoxville Iowa which is normally the largest gathering of 410 Winged Sprint Cars in the country, we will attempt something that has never been done. One race with a minimum of 18 cars and a maximum of 36 cars at Huset's Speedway with the winner of this race becoming the owner of the entire Operation. Yes, if you are the fastest, you will win the Track! The 70+ acres of land, the track, the buildings, the lights, the name, the website, the billboards, the whole operation!

How's it going to work:

(Again, this is all a preliminary draft and the official rules, processes and procedures will be released shortly.)

The cost per car in the race will be a non-refundable $200,000 deposit.

There will be a Minimum of 18 cars required to enter for the race to happen.

There will be a Maximum of 36 cars allowed to participate, meaning the worst odds possible of winning would be 1 in 36 and the best odds to win would be 1 in 18.

The clear title entire racing facility will be placed in trust with our partner trust company, Title Company & bank with the prestigious legal team of Meierhenry Sargent LLP in Sioux Falls, South Dakota handling the transaction.

Once the contracts are complete and the proper accounts set up, the drivers, race teams, sponsors, or individuals will be able to wire their $200,000 non refundable place holder into the title company to hold their spot in the race.
In the unlikely circumstance we do not hit the 18 participant number, then the race will simply not happen and the funds will be immediate returned from the trust company.

Entry will be on a first come first serve basis and when we hit 36 participants we will accept no more cars.

Open entry will be available from the time the contracts are ready to sign until exactly one week poor to the event happening.

Anyone entering AFTER the registration deadline would have to pay a $75,000 late entry fee if there are still any slots left in the race and they may do so with certified funds right up until the day of the race if there is room.

In case of a rain out, we have blocked off the next 2 days, (Wednesday and Thursday, August 14th and 15th) as rain dates.

The winner of the race will win the track. Second place wins $200,000. Third place wins $100,000 and Fourth place wins $100,000.

The first 12 teams to sign up will also receive a VIP suite for their guests at the race with a retail value of $20,000 to include 20 tickets, the suite, food and beverages.
The winner will have the option to keep or sell the track to anyone they wish and will be able to work with the title and escrow company to take title to the property or assign the title to another person or entity.

This race will be open to the public and we will be posting information soon on the ticket pricing, suite pricing, VIP pricing and all you will need to know if you want to attend the race in person and see this historic event live.

We will be following all of the standard World of Outlaws rules for the cars when it comes to the specs and teching. The rules will be clearly posted and will be in line with industry standards and those ran at the Knoxville Nationals.

Our plan would be 3 heat races of 12 cars with 24 cars making it to the main race and that feature being 40 laps.

We look forward to help and assistance from all of the major racing leagues such as the World of Outlaws when it comes to judges, officiating, and running the entire event with the upmost fairness and integrity to all participants.

We anticipate 3-5 of the most experienced judges from all spectrums of sprint can racing to be the final word with full impartiality and fairness to any that enter.

We are confident that this will be the largest purse in racing history and plan to do everything in our power to make sure this race is up to the highest standards of the industry for that very reason from the preparation of the track to the safety of the drivers, race officials, judges, security, and fairness.

This will be the only event that evening. No other events, classes, races, or hoopla. Simply the biggest and most important race ever.

This is real and this is not a test, a feeler, or a joke in any fashion. We cannot wait for this race to happen and this legendary facility to find a new owner in the most appropriate way ever imagined__ the track will go to the Best Racer's Team!

There will be many more details coming soon. AGAIN, This information is NOT YET OFFICIAL and we are working diligently with our legal team to release all of the official rules, processes and procedures via www.husets.com on or before Wednesday, June 19th at 5pm Central.

Huset's Speedway dirt track

The race concept as Huset's Speedway

As we were re-branding it and getting it ready for the new guys to come in. One of my staff members said, "We should do some kind of a lotto thing. Or have people buy numbers. That sparked an idea. Why not have a race for it? We've had farmers, developers, city officials and everybody tell us what kind of use the land could be. But, what it really needs to be is a race track.

Sunday, July 21, 2019 - Huset's Speedway Hall of Fame Inductees - Gene Brudigan, Chuck Fee, Keith Frantsen, Chad Meyer and Rob Ristesund.

Gene Brudigan's racing career started in his home state of Nebraska in the late 1950's and he didn't even know it. Gene met up with a friend Marvin Herchied, who was building race cars at the time. Marvin asked Gene to drive one of them and a race car driver was born.

After driving for Herchied for a short time, Brudigan purchased his own car and raced in and around Norfolk, NE, along with Columbus, Clearwater, Albion and Grand Island, NE. Following a three year domination at Riviera Raceway in Norfolk, NE where he won points championships in 1965, 1966 and 1967, along with changes in rules, Gene moved his racing career north to South Dakota, Iowa and Minnesota. He raced at Huset's Speedway, along with Hartford, Yankton, Huron and Sioux Falls at Sioux Empire Fair Grounds in South Dakota, Rock Rapids and Spencer County Fair in Spencer, Iowa and Jackson, Minnesota. He also spent time racing in Kansas and Oklahoma, racing sprint cars, late models, snowmobiles and go-karts.

Brudigan Racing made their "home away from home" at the Ramada Inn in Sioux Falls where he and his crew stayed and worked on the car. He was among a group of racers who chose to leave Riviera prior to the 1976 racing season to compete at Huset's, about a two-and-a-half hour drive from his home in Hoskins, near Norfolk. The trek became one that Brudigan would make nearly every weekend during the racing season for about the next 15 years.

While racing at Huset's, Brudigan became a fan favorite, where he won the mid-season championship in 1976, finished fourth in points in 1978, fifth in points in 1980, top 10 in points in 1981 and received the attendance award in 1986. During that time, he won eight feature events in his short time competing at the track. Brudigan also competed often at tracks in Hartford, Jackson, Minn., and Rock Rapids, Iowa, as well as at many special events at tracks in a six-state area.

Brudigan purchased his last sprint car in 1986, but later sold it back to the former owners of the car, Kim and Deb Lingenfelter. As points champion at Riviera Speedway in Norfolk, NE, he was eager for one more ride there and hung up the helmet in 2000. The fully restored Lingenfelter machine led the funeral procession for his final resting place, as he passed away in August of 2018.

Sunday, July 21, 2019 - Huset's Speedway Hall of Fame Inductees - Gene Brudigan, Chuck Fee, Keith Frantsen, Chad Meyer and Rob Ristesund.

If there was a person on this earth that lived to race it was Chuck Fee. Following an Honorable Discharge from the United States Navy, it took little time for Chuck to find success at Huset'9s Speedway. Fee steered his 1955 Chevy to a feature win in the Sportsman class in June of 1965, his first year of competition at the track. He followed the victory with six more wins that year and seven more victories in 1966, when he won the point title. His 14 feature wins were even more notable considering that Fee started at or near the back of field prior to most of his triumphs.

Fee moved up to the competitive Modified class in 1967, when he drove for veteran car owner Gene Egge. He would eventually drive cars for several owners, including Hall of Fame member Glenn Anderson, and also his own machines. With guidance from his Dad, Robert Fee, Uncle Lyle Cauthon and life long friends helping along the way, Chuck scored more feature wins at Huset's and Brookings Speedway, until the rapidly escalating cost of racing eventually forced him from competition following the 1979 season.

Chuck met and married Judy Soukup. The couple spent the weekends racing. Then the troops (4 kids) came along, they went racing too. The kids were told to sit in in corner number one, so he could see them of course. The rules for the kids: no running and when the National Anthem played and By God, you better be standing with your hand over heart. Chuck talked racing with anyone and everyone, even if they did't know anything about racing they would by the time Chuck was done talking. Chuck raced around the area for years. Later in life, every summer he would drive down to the Knoxville Nationals, sleep in his truck that he parked under some shaded tree and watch every race, reminisce with the Old Timers and always brought home Knoxville t-shirts for his grand kids.\n\nThen, well into his 70's, Chuck built his own B modified race car with the magic number 139, of course. While Fee was relegated to the grandstand at local tracks, his desire to race never diminished and he returned to the track in the Modified class at Jackson Motorplex in 2017 at the age of 74, which would be his last. He planned to race in 2018 before he passed away unexpectedly in February of that year.

The only person that could stop Chuck from racing was the Lord God, Himself. The Lord took Chuck in February 2018. No doubt, if there wasn't a dirt 3/8 mile track in Heaven before there is now. Chuck had some favorite sayings but, probably the most poignant was, "The Gas is on the right...turn left..go fast!"
