Different Africa tribes take the birth rite so seriously. The societies really go all out to celebrate the arrival of new babies as a way of protecting them against the evil spirits which they believe are responsible for their deaths. Examples include the Namibia people who never leave a new born child on his or her own for fear of the babies being stolen by evil spirits. The woods be people also avoid naming a child until they are 12 years old for fear of them being identified by the spirits of the dead. The Iria Ritual. Usually done to girls between age 14-16. The girls are to stand bare-breast for the crowd to inspect their virginity. During the final days of the rite of passage, the girls traveled together down to the river while the Osokolo (senior male of the tribe) beat the women with a stick to ward off water spirits. As if that isn't all, the girls were taught how to dance half naked at the square market, all this was believed to prepare the girl for marriage. Is it about men alone? Of course no, actually more rites of passage in Africa have to be undergone by women. A good example being the Lip plate incision among the girls of the Mursi tribe. The first incision of the plate is believed to be done by the mother. The girls can then keep adding the plates the following months untill the desired size is reached. It's not an obligation to undergo the right, it just shows how one is committed to her tribe. The rite is seen to increase beauty among women and widows are allowed to remove them as a sign of mourning for their dead husbands. The Eunoto ceremony among the Maasai is the rite of passage that marks the transition into adulthood for the males. It is an elaborate ceremony that marks the end of a relatively carefree life and the beginning of greater responsibilities. The initiates are then expected to watch over the community’s cattle, participate in cattle raids, and kill a lion with their bare hands. At the end of the Eunoto ceremony, the young man’s hair is shaved, thus formally indicating the passage to manhood. In addition to having their hair shaved, they also have their skin painted with ochre in preparation for marriage. They then marry and start families. africahistory1 Foot Africa BBC News Africa Weird History

Ever wondered how the Sotho from Africa life is😃? Well Village life centres largely on the fields, the chief’s court, the kraals, the school, the church and the initiation lodge. Circumcision forms an integral part of the ritualised initiation ceremonies that train boys to take their place as full members of the clan. Many young boys spend a large part of their lives as herdsmen, while women and young girls do much of the hard work in the fields. Also to note is both men and women wear blankets, often multicoloured as cloaks. Men and women also wear the typical Sotho hat, which is woven from reeds into conical shapes and has a decorative topknot. ❤️🙌 🌍 African Diaspora BBC News Africa Foot Africa

The different major cultural groups in Africa all share different traditions that are unique to themselves. The Khoikhoi and San people are still a nomadic people and are invaluable to the land and people around them. They maintain land that they travel on, their skills are also very helpful in catching poachers around the country. The Zulu's are most known for their tribal and spiritual nature. The Ndebele are most known for the art that the women create featuring unique bead work and geometric design. The Xhosa utilize a complex system of clothing to set the social hierarchy that shows marital, social, and political status. The Sotho people are organized into villages by age which also determines their status in the community. All of these cultures are unique in their own ways, but together the help define South Africa.
