Spooky season recommendation!

I devoured Ink Blood Sister Scribe on my plane ride last week. It has magic, a touch of romance, and mystery - all of which kept me guessing.

Two sisters have spent years separated - one guarding the family’s collection of magical books and the other on a directive to keep on the move to avoid the tragic fate of her mother. As their paths cross with others familiar with the ancient book magic, they uncover mysteries of their past and a broader web of lies.

Somehow I missed this New York Times notable book of 2023. Big thanks to for the gifted copy!

Also why are there sticks in this picture? Because I have a child who keeps bringing sticks into the house, so why not?

Review Roundup!

Here are some quick reviews of books I read over the last few weeks. Thank you to the tagged publishers for the gifted copies!

📘Banyan Moon: A multigenerational story of three Vietnamese women - grandma, mom, and daughter - as they navigate their lives and complicated relationships in a house that they both love and hate.
My Take: Very much enjoyed. Touching and complex.

📕Eddie Winston is Looking for Love: Sweet story following a 90-year old man looking for his first kiss with the help of a young woman in mourning for a lost love.
My Take: Marianne Cronin wrote The One Hundred Years of Lennie and Margot which I loved but also sobbed. This one is more sweet and less sob worthy. A great pallet cleanser after a heavy read.

📙Clickbait: Disgraced journalist is stuck writing clickbait while sorting out her life.
My Take: interesting premise. Struggled with unlikable main character.

📗The Woman Who Lied: Bestselling author of detective novels finds herseld the target of a copycat villain. Is she next victim?
My Take: Kept me guessing which is always a win with thrillers. Not too gory.

It’s starting to feel like fall in Seattle - but I’m hoping the rain stays away for as much of soccer season as possible.

I celebrated the crisp weather with my first spooky read of the season - One House Left. It follows a group of teens who find out what happens when urban legends start coming true.

I liked it but felt like there was a lot of build up that the ending didn’t completely land for me.

Hmmmmmmm.

I really enjoyed parts of this slow and gentle story following a singer throughout the decades of her life in St. Louis. There aren’t any crazy ahas but instead the journey of a life with ups and downs.

The epilogue though was not for me.

If you want something a little tender and meandering, do this one, but read the epilogue at your discretion.

Between Friends & Lovers was a perfect beach read!

Doctor and influencer Josephine Boateng has carried a torch for her super rich and famous actor best friend Ezra. Cue Ezra’s inconsiderate attitude and enter patient and thoughtful novelist Malcom. But will Ezra lure Jo back to him?

Some fun twists and turns and a relationship that is easy to root for - I flew through this one.

Finished this book last week!

Plays Well With Others follows a mom in NYC trying to keep up with the intense mom culture - especially applying to kindergarten.

At times funny but also at time teeth gritting as things go sideways. It was a quick and fun read though would have loved a bit more character development!

I left this copy at the beach house in hopes a future guest grabs it and enjoys it. Thank you for the gifted copy!

I have been savoring one of my most anticipated summer reads all week.

To say I was excited to receive a gifted copy of this book from is an understatement. I’ve been a Rainbow Rowell fan since Eleanor & Park hit shelves in 2013.

Slow Dance weaves us between present and past as we learn about Shiloh and Cary’s friendship - navigating lives that are messy and complicated and not always how they expected. The characters are unique and relatable and all the heart strings are tugged.

I can’t wait to finish the book this weekend. Keep an eye out for it when it publishes next week!

Did you have an author you were obsessed with in middle school?

Mine was Stephen King. So imagine how delighted I was when The Dissonance by Shaun Hamill started to give me those classic King vibes.

This horror/fantasy alternates between past and present. We learn the origin story of a group of kids with special powers and also their return to their hometown to rectify past mistakes.

If you enjoy this genre - definitely recommend. Happy pub day to The Dissonance, and thank you to for the gifted copy!

Anyone else in Friday treat mode after a busy week?

Mine is coffee and some pages of Lula Dean’s Little Library of Banned Books. I am loving this story of a town’s journey of transformation through books - despite the best efforts of the local book banning busybody, Lula Dean.

If you could find out how long you had left to live, would you?

In The Measure, everyone 22 and older across the world wakes up one morning to a box waiting for them. Inside? A string that it is soon discovered shows the exact length of the individual’s life.

The book follows multiple people whose lives intersect across a year of navigating this new information. It looks at politics, prejudice, and love, joy, and connection.

I really enjoyed this one. It was the unique combo of easy to read and thought provoking.

I just finished reading The Rachel Incident last night, and it was a delight!

Set in Cork, Ireland in 2009, this book will make you remember was life is like in your early 20s - discovering yourself, the importance of friendship, the slight self-centeredness, and the decisions big and small that rock your world. All with some interesting Irish history and cultural touch points thrown in.

Rachel and her best friend James plan her seduction of her English professor - which doesn’t go as planned but sends their lives down paths that continue to intersect.

Two thumbs up 👍🏻 👍🏻

I had seen good reviews of I Hope This Finds You Well by Natalie Sue, but it still beat my expectations.

Office worker Jolene is all about keeping her head down and getting work done - until an HR incident, layoff rumors, and surprise access to the entire company’s emails.

This is a delightful story reminding us that people aren’t just who they present at work. Lives are complicated and messy - and looking one click deeper can totally change perception.

Happy pub day to this cozy, beachy read!

The Seaside Sisters follows two sisters and an aunt living their lives, navigating their careers, and sorting out their relationships in the beachside city of Chatham.

If you are looking for a read that floats by without too much drama, a lot of Chardonnay and food, and with characters you root for - this is a good one to pick up.

Does “technothriller” mean anything to you?

I had never heard the term but now that I’ve read Going Zero it feels like an obvious subgenre description. Twists and turns line a thriller, lots of technology at play - but not sci-fi because it’s scary close to reality.

In Going Zero, big social media tech pairs up with big government CIA data to create new tools for tracking down basically anyone. To test the capabilities, 10 Americans are selected to “go zero” and the experts have 30 days to hunt them down.

Some interesting explorations of the tension between the individual right to privacy and the community desire for safety.

Other thing I learned - the author Anthony McCarten has written several screenplays including The Theory of Everything, Darkest Hour, and Bohemian Rhapsody.
