Such beautiful greens come attached to carrots, and yet we wonder what to do with them. Usually, they go into the freezer for the next round of veggie broth making. But could we be using them fresh? 🤔

What do you do with carrot greens?

It's a sad day when this happens in one of our kitchens. But you know we juice the good part and compost the rest!

How do you keep tabs on ripening produce in your kitchen?

I confess I like the ease of a squeeze bottle for honey...I just don't have whatever it takes to manupulate a honey dripper! But I hate buy plastic, so I get local honey in a refillable glass jar....then transfer it to my squeeze bottle. How long have I used that squeeze bottle? Long enough to know that using it just once is a supreme waste of our precious resources.

At the risk of ewwww...did you know that cotton swabs are compostable? Just check to make sure yours doesn't have the plastic stem! Sure, it's a small thing and guess what? We believe the small AND big things we do all matter.

Look at what I just discovered...at Target! Plastic free toilet cleaner. Better yet? It works! No more plastic-that-doesnt-get-recycled bottles OR DIY recipes that dont work. Happy day!

Do you have a plastic-free source for an effective bathroom cleaner?

Now this is what I call feeding the flock. This church converted its entire side yard into a vegetable garden and they gladly share their bounty with the community.

More and more cities are allowing people to grow "Front Yard food," though many HOAs still prohibit it.

I find front yard gardens more welcoming than traditional turf lawn. How do you feel about them?

Today's use-it-up hack: the last lettuce leaf under the morning's egg scramble. Gives a nice color contrast, adds a little fiber, makes a simple breakfast look a little fancy, and uses up the green stuff before it goes bad.

How do you use up the last bit of lettuce?

Though I could've done without the stickers, I'm thrilled to find paper straws at the La Fuente in Pulaski, Tennessee! Americans toss something like 500 million straws a day, filling up landfills and oceans with more plastic junk.

But not this straw! Not from this restaurant! Hooray and salud.

Our first full episode is here! Co-hosts Cheryl Leutjen and Christy Bell chat about ways to reduce food waste in our kitchens.

Did you know...Americans waste approximately 108 billion pounds of food each year? All that lost food costs us money, time, resources like water and fertilizers to grow the food—plus all the emissions from producing, transporting and landfilling that wasted food.

We know how easy it is to forget the bounty in the refrigerator and cabinets…until it’s too late.

What can we do in our kitchens to reduce the amount of food we waste?

In this episode, we share ideas about purchasing, storing, using and remembering to use the food we bring into our kitchens.

What ideas do you have for reducing food waste? Let us know!

So excited to get this dish scrubber in my subscription this month. The brush head made of wood and horsehair is both replaceable and compostable! Manufacturers, take note...make a plan for the end game for all the stuff you put out into the world, please. We are tired of dealing with your trash.
