Awake All Hours celebrates 3 years of podcasts and parties with an all star cast at Avalon Cafe on the 15th of April!

Dual Monitor, the impeccable pairing of party-starters Fliss Mayo and Zebb Dempster, has been taking some of the biggest stages in the UK by storm, including Gottwood Festival and Boiler Room: Liverpool, alongside dance music giants such as Eliza Rose, Mall Grab, Kettama and Yung Singh. Purveyors of all things devilishly bassy and percussive, their banger selections, irresistible chemistry and infectious energy behind the decks means it’s sure to be all flailing limbs and hugging your mates until close! With their current trajectory, we don’t think you’ll be seeing Dual Monitor in venues as intimate as Avalon Cafe too often in the future - not one to be missed.

Blip Discs founder, Tom Blip, is a true legend of underground electronic music in the UK, dedicated to pushing the freshest sounds. Trips to Uganda have yielded iconic collaborations with Kampala MC legend and former INSIGHTS guest, Swordman Kitala, on classic records such as ‘Kitala Beat’ and ‘Kimbalagala’. UK Funky, Dancehall, Gqom, skewed bass and wiggy acid all collide spectacularly at the hands of Tom, making for a grin-inducing, heart-pounding dance floor experience!

AAJA radio residents Zak Smiff and Calm Stiege will be joining forces for a rowdy multi-genre b2b! Holding the place down on support will be our beloved AAH residents, St. Amp and tarcier.

Awake All Hours brings you an evening of cutting-edge electronics at Avalon Cafe, courtesy of Wordcolour, Aircode, Anjali and our resident, St. Amp!

Saturday 10th December, Avalon Cafe SE14 5RW

Tickets £6 - £10 plus booking fee. Limited early birds on sale now: https://ra.co/events/1601656

With his ‘Juno Way’ EP serving as a self-professed ode to Avalon Cafe, it was a no brainer to invite Nick Worrall aka wordcolour to headline a party there. The Houndstooth artist’s recent album ‘the trees were buzzing, and the grass.’ is a standout from this year - a collage of vibrant, detailed, cinematic sound design, mind-bending production chops and gut punching bass. At every turn in a Wordcolour track, you can hear influence from classical music, minimalism, foley sound and, of course, the contemporary scene of bass-oriented UK electronic music. Expect Nick to draw on all of the above for a blistering headline set.

We are thrilled to finally have aircode play one of our parties having always adored Julia’s wildly experimental and forward thinking approach to sound system music, as displayed on excellent records for Nostro Hood System and Alien Jams. Her set is bound to both rattle the speakers and frazzle the brain.

Sisu, Sonic Gaze and SODAA member Anjali is on fire at the moment! To name but a few accolades, over the course of this year, she will have performed at Body Movements, appeared on bills with legends such as Richie Hawtin and Fiyahdred and is even rumoured to appear at a certain prestigious white-tiled bathroom in Berlin…

As usual, our co-host and resident DJ St. Amp will be holding things down with a swirling and body-jackin’ blast of IDM, footwork, jungle and speedy techno.

If you are on low income / unwaged, please give us a shout in the DMs and we can sort something out :)

‘INSIGHTS 015 // BABY BLUE - The Canadian Scene, ‘End Of Sleep’, Sampling, Trance & Detroit Techno’, is now streaming wherever you get your podcasts! Links below 🔊

What happens if you combine Crystal Castles, Bark Psychosis, Claude Young, L.S.G, Daft Punk, Tiësto and Deftones? You get ‘End Of Sleep’ by !

Sophia Briggs is the mind behind an album that really peaked our interest earlier this year - a sort of mid-90’s trance dream shot through the nightmare of the beginning of the start of the pandemic in 2020. After sharing some laughs over an Alanis Morisette comparison and having our interest peaked even further after discovering the album is constructed of no less than 500 samples, we new we had to invite Sophia on the show, which she kindly accepted!

Over the course of this interview, we discuss Sofia’s early years, getting into DJing, the Canadian music scene and her involvement in running the party s.M.i.L.e. We then move onto Sofia’s relationship with Planet Euphorique, the story behind ‘End Of Sleep’, her approach to sampling, production techniques and her vast pool of influences, from the likes of Detroit masters such as Claude Young and John Beltran, mid 90-s & early 2000’s Tresor records, Trance, Electro and Electro Clash. We finish by discussing Sofia’s plans for the future and some of her favourite current music, which you can support via the Buy Music Club link below.

Special thanks to Sofia Briggs and Planet Euphorique for allowing the use of clips from ‘Lineman’ and ‘Plastic Glass Wall’ at the beginning and end of this episode.

In this episode of INSIGHTS, we are joined by Nick Worrall, a London-based producer, DJ and media composer who releases music under the pseudonym wordcolour. His music is a collage of vibrant, detailed, cinematic sound design, mind-bending breakbeat chops and gut punching bass. At every turn in a Wordcolour track, you can hear influence from classical music, minimalism, film soundtracks and, of course, the contemporary scene of bass-oriented UK electronic music. His new album ‘The trees were buzzing, and the grass.’ is set to be released on June 24th. We’ve been following Nick’s work since his EP ‘Juno Way’ dropped back in 2020, and couldn’t have been more excited to hear that a full length was on the way.

Over the course of this interview, we discuss Nick’s formative experiences, including childhood radio experiments, being introduced to ‘Kid A’ and ‘Homogenic’ and playing in a band with Angus Finlayson aka Minor Science. We then move onto Nick’s creative output, discussing ‘Juno Way’ and his relationship with the fabriclondon-affiliated Houndstooth before doing the deep-dive on his startling and cinematic new album! Nick gives an insight into his production process, approach to sampling, collaborating with vocalist Natasha Lohan and percussionist Michael Anklin, his fascination with foley and sound mixing in film and the influence this has on his music. We finish by discussing Nick’s plans for the future, his new live set and some of his favourite current music, which you can support via the Buy Music Club link.

'EP 052 // Glastonbury Festival Preview, 700 Bliss, Parrish Smith & µ-Ziq', is now streaming on all platforms! Links to the podcast below, links to support the artists in the episode description 🔊

In this episode of Awake All Hours, we begin with a brief recap of Primavera Sound before presenting our preview for the world’s most famous festival, Glastonbury (9:24)! We do our best dissect the stupidly stacked clashfinder, highlighting significant electronic artists and unmissable sets, from the main stages to the darkest recesses of the festival, for those interested or attending next weekend. Highlights include but certainly not limited to a Sports Banger Mega Rave, Cinthie shutting down Genosys, a tantalising B2B between LCY and Blawan, swaying merrily in front of Firmly Rooted Soundsytem all day, Shygirl performing live on a giant head and an all night B***y Bass take over!

We follow with album reviews, featuring the new noise rap head-spinner 'Nothing To Declare' by 700 Bliss (42:32), Parrish Smith’s genre distorting ‘Light, Cruel & Vain’ (57:00) and µ-Ziq’s pillowy IDM dream, ‘Magic Pony Ride’ (1:10:58). We finish, as always, with What’s In My Bandcamp Basket (1:22:58), rounding up our favourite fresh club-ready cuts, featuring Manni Dee, Luca Lozano, DJ Polo & Ramzee, Angel D’lite and more!

In this episode of INSIGHTS, we have the honour of being joined by JANA RUSH! Her most recent two records, 2021’s ‘Painful Enlightenment’ and this year’s ‘Dark Humour’, on the legendary label, Planet Mu, have seen her not only push the boundaries of her own sound but of footwork as a whole. It’s safe to say then that we were thrilled to speak to this visionary producer, Chicago O.G. and one of our favourite artists.

Over the course of this interview, Jana discusses her early years and getting into music at a young age via radio, the Chicago scene in the 90’s, meeting and working alongside legends such as Gant-Man, DJ Rashad, DJ Deeon, & Paul Johnson and how the scene compares today. We then discuss her albums, ‘Painful Enlightenment’ & ‘Dark Humour’, going in depth on Jana’s approach to production, sampling and pushing the boundaries of the footwork genre.
