A beautiful time last night with for their first benefit dinner, raising funds to enable their work of offering care to parents after the loss of a child. What a joy to team up with and .gerhardt to tell intersecting stories of loss and redemption (aren’t those so often the ones Yahweh writes?). More than one person came up afterward, Encounter shining on their face, and said “I’ve never experienced anything like that.” Here’s to the God who wants to meet us in His stories. Here’s to the thrill of Him finding us there.

Thanks to for the photos. And keep weeping with those who weep, . May God fill you as you pour yourself out.

This week’s episode tells a story rife with brutality. It’s one of those Very Old Testament™️ tales that does not get taught in children’s classes (for good reason) and that, frankly, doesn’t get preached much. It shines an uncomfortably bright light on the worst parts of humanity and leaves questions hanging in the air.

I think it’s an important story, and I’m still on a journey of figuring out why. …Can both be true?

It’s one of those stories you can’t forget once you hear it: King Solomon, having just been granted a miraculous measure of wisdom by God, is presented with the case of two distraught women—one of their babies has died, but both claim the living child. What will Solomon do?

I love that Wisdom is a character in this story. I love getting glimpses of Solomon’s inner longings, and I love that we get to join the young king in that moment when Yahweh appears in a dream and offers to give him anything he wants…how would you respond? Been looking forward to telling this one for a while.

Good stuff in The Latest later this week about this episode, so make sure you’re signed up.

I hope The Answer and the Sage blesses you.

This was the top vote from the patrons for this season and is one of the most famous moments in all of Scripture. Here’s to waking up to Yahweh’s presence—think of all that’s around us that we haven’t yet seen!

◾️ S e a s o n 6 ◾️ Today’s the day! The first episode is waiting for you at this very moment. This one’s got quite a bit of grit (so choose your listening partners wisely), but so much light. We present to you…the story of Hosea and Gomer.

In honor of their story, who’s your favorite ride-or-die, loyal-to-the-end character from pop culture or literature? Sound off below. // We like Cousin Richie from The Bear. A rough start, but he gets there. :)

Look at this! Thrilled and honored to see Holy Ghost Stories mentioned in Christianity Today alongside incredible resources like and . What a thoughtful article from Dr Brad East (), speaking to the increasing trends in illiteracy (Biblical and otherwise) with plenty of hope and well-founded optimism.

What a privilege to be counted among a new crop of lectors in this digital age.

Our last stop on the tour was unprecedented—thanks to the incredible open-air, Amish-built (no nails!) pavilion at , we had a couple of extra elements adding to our experience of the Exodus story:

1. The sounds of livestock — Entering Sinai alongside Moses and the Israelites and their flocks and herds, with the voices of actual cows and sheep in the background? Perfection.

2. The wind — It was a wild, blustery day in Fort Worth, and though we prayed that the wind would calm down for the show, it didn’t really. The fabric panels behind the stage waved, our shirts fluttered, the microphones trembled…and it was amazing. “How did you script the wind?!!!”—it was a question multiple people asked me after the show, and all I could tell them was that we prayed for good weather. I suppose Yahweh knew better than us exactly what that would be.

We cannot thank our consummate host Holly Brown .70 enough for welcoming the Holy Ghost Stories family to —if you’re in the DFW area, you absolutely have to check it out. They’re sharing the joys of a more deeply rooted life with children in Tarrant County and beyond, and their unreasonable hospitality points to Yahweh in unmissable ways.

We’re so grateful to everyone who came out to this final show of the Exodus Tour—your presence, your smiles, your tears, and your voices (those ‘amens’!!) made this night unforgettable. We loved gazing upon our covenant-keeping God with you. 🙌

This one felt like coming home (because it was). Our show in the Austin area brought me back to the place I ministered for over 10 years—the place where God gave birth to what would become Holy Ghost Stories. It was a joyful full circle moment, shared with so many people I love. Highlights of this night on the tour:

▪️Dear friends helping with load-in and setup, enabling a much more relaxed pre-show schedule🙌

▪️Jumping into ’s new prayer room—what a sacred, powerful space. I’d shed tears within ten seconds and I accidentally spent an hour in there praying

▪️The pre-show meet&greet/Q&A (pictured)—what a delight to spend time with kindred spirits!

▪️Listening to Eve and share the song they wrote about Yahweh’s care for Moses and Israel—“You’re not forsaken…I’ll part the seas to save you…Not by your power but mine…” So, so good.

▪️Watching people shed tears as I told the story of Moses’ death…and the incredible moment He awakes a millennium later on the Mount of Transfiguration

▪️Hearing from a couple after the show who’d brought a Buddhist friend of theirs—“I don’t know why, but I felt like I should come,” she’d said a couple of days after their invitation. And then, during the entire show, she wept.

What a God we serve!! I love that He loves to spend time with us in these stories. Thank you, Austin!!

I was asked today, “What can someone who attends the live show expect?” Great question—what we’re doing doesn’t have an easy box. So here’s my answer:

Very simply, Holy Ghost Stories Live experiences are fresh ways of meeting God. I’ll be telling pieces of the story of the Exodus alongside live cello accompaniment from an incredible cellist/composer named Kendall Ramseur. (Kendall created the original score for the 10-part telling of the Exodus in Season 4 of HGS—that’s him in the photo, playing his heart out at our show in Arkansas a few months ago.) We’ll also be joined by singer/songwriter Eve Gerhardt—the night will be sort of a braiding together of story and song.

We like to say these shows are part concert, part performance art, part campfire story, and 100% worship. They’re so special—there’s just something about experiencing these Spirit-filled stories alongside Spirit-filled people.

/// So there you have it. If you haven’t grabbed your tickets, the link’s up top. I hope we get to see you!

*Given the out-of-the-box-ness of this whole thing, we’re always looking for ways to describe it to folks. If you’ve been to a show, how would you describe it in a sentence?

20/03/2024

“Why does it matter that we tell Bible stories and don’t just preach or teach them?” I was asked this question in an interview recently, and here’s (part of) my answer:

Stories hold more than sermons can.

Able to hold seemingly contradictory truths at the same time, able to simultaneously reveal and conceal, able to challenge and comfort, able to spark wonder and provoke empathy…a good story’s density is tough to compete with. But *teaching* a story rather than telling it—that has a way of stripping much of its power and magic (and certainly the bewitching elegance).

Should we stop teaching/preaching the narrative texts of the Bible? Of course not. But let’s start doing more than that.

Familiar as we may be with many stories in Scripture, most of us have spent precious little time immersed in and meditating on them rather than skimming them or milking them for moralistic application points.

That’s why I want you to come to one of these shows on the Exodus Tour. We’ll sit inside one of the most powerful stories in all of Scripture and find that as we slow down and take our time, Yahweh finds us and draws us close. Shows us Himself. And tends to to our hearts.

You’ll love the way you encounter Him in this story and in the melody and lyric that accompany it. I can’t wait to encounter Him with you.

Grab your seat today and we’ll see you in April.

(If you’re coming, comment with which show you’ll be at—we’ll pick someone to give two free tickets to the pre-show Q&A and meet & greet with Kendall and myself🎉)

Three years and it’s finally time to tell this classic. Question: how old do you picture Daniel being when he’s thrown into the lions’ den?

Season 5 is a wrap! Thanks for meeting Him in these stories with us. See you out on the road in April.

(Justin here—Eve also happens to be my daughter. It’s a strange thing when your child becomes a partner of yours. Praise God for all things strange and beautiful.)

We can’t wait to welcome you into an encounter with the Divine. Who are you inviting?

New episode this week! Josiah is now 26 years old and coming into his own as a ruler. Will he have the strength to rid the darkness from Judah? …Or better, will Judah cling to the shadows or choose the light?

It’s so amazing that these stories are real. Hope this one blesses you.

You guys! I didn’t realize it until my family surprised me with cards and brownies, but Holy Ghost Stories is officially THREE YEARS OLD TODAY! 🎂 Thanks to Yahweh’s incredible work and the way you all have listened and shared and reviewed and given, these stories have found their way into the ears and hearts of people all over the world. When an unexpected discovery interrupts Josiah’s renovation of the temple, panic ensues. …And for good reason.

Welcome to the first episode of 2024. We’re so excited to be able to share this one with you. Josiah was an extraordinary human being, and demonstrates that generational cycles aren’t irrevocable. Praise God.

Too, I’ve long been intrigued by the pivotal moment in this story. I cannot imagine the feelings it provoked.

Hope this one transports you!

Old Testament narrative is the true crime podcast of the Bible. :) Not really, but also…totally. And the first episode of this ancient crime drama? This story.

Today, we immerse ourselves in an account of the world’s first murder. It seems, though, that the homicide is only one of many important things happening in this story. Hope you’re blessed by “The Guide and the Reaper.”
