It's been quite a while as i am spending a lot of time in plugin development lately. The first plugin is finished and i am more than happy how it turned out. This plugin is capable of replacing a chain of plugins i normaly use on the instrumental bus and is sounding awesome. VCA Style Compression with an optional Neve-ish preamp style. Grit mode is adding some subtle parallel compression mojo...

I've been using this unit for quiet a while now and have to admit that it is an absolute awesome piece of gear!

Do you really need one to achive killer tones? Maybe, maybe not...There are a lot of good modeling and profiling amps out there which have absolute killer tones. It is just a question of your needs. Do you need routing possibilities? Are you in need of an audio interface, good looping accessibility, do you like mixing multiple amps? After considering all those points the quad cortex is the perfect match for my workflow. Here are some points i love about this unit beside the quality of tones which are for sure incredible good.

- built in audio interface
- usage of multiple amps & cabs
- reamping possibilities e..g. 4 tracks at once
- easy to use user interface
- cloud integration to share and store presets
- rotary switches making you feel tweaking a real amp
- scene mode for live playing has so much possibilities to create endless combinations

Testing string gauges on a baritone scale guitar for drop b. 11 - 54 seems to be a nice fit for tight low end and enjoyable higher regions.

More dynamic!

Working with tempo changes within songs can create dynamic and excitement. Even a few bpm faster can let your chorus shine or a breakdown will hit you when its way slower than the rest of the song. Find good transitions to handle the bpm changes between parts and you are good to go.

Need bass?

We have a lot of options these days when it comes to songwriting. The various amount of high quality virtuell instruments is nearly endless but there were not much options when it comes to a realistic sounding bass guitar. Recently there are some companies producing high quality midi bass instruments with several options like alternate picking, string noise, bass models, picking style and/or included amp sims.

These plugins can help saving time in your writing process. Even if you do not own a bass you are able to quickly sketch ideas and send them around to work on.

Pick attack!

One of the most overlooked tool for guitar and bass players is the guitar pick itself. There are tons of variations in shape, material, edges and thickness. Each variation has its one character, reacts differently and can be a fundamental parts of creating your sound.

Some rules regarding sound:

✅ A thicker pick will reflect a fuller and more solid sound than a lighter pick

✅ The tip type can be used to increase or drecrease your general pick attack. A sharper tip will sound more precise than a rounded tip.

✅ Round edges will produce a warmer sound whilst sharp edges will have a sharper attack and a brighter sound.

There are tons of other options that have impact on your sound and also your control of playing. Remember...The pick is between you and your guitar/bass.

Experiment with different picks and find the right ones for your specific needs and sound.

Be prepared...

The most important step for mixing is preperation. You need to have a perfect overview over the whole project within a blink. Otherwise you'll get lost in scrolling, searching and switching windows to find a specific track.

Import your tracks as intrumental blocks so you are able to make small balance decisions while listening to the tracks.

Group the imported blocks and colorize them for a better overview. You will directly know where you are, even when you are working on bigger trackviews.

Templates can help you saving time setting up busses and general effects you'll typically use.

After preperation you are ready to make a crushing mix way faster, cause you already know the project in its entirely and you can have just fun while mixing.

Finally found some time between projects to update the Kemper to its latest 8.0.6 release. Almost felt like a new gear day because of the latest addition of the Kemper Drive. Some presets for Klon Centaur, Maxon 808 and the Horizon Precision Drive were included within this update. Pretty impressed after playing around with them. Definitely a great addition!!!

Even if there are a lot of really good ampsims out there we still use the Kemper Amp quite a lot. The dynamic response and the ability to reproduce the sound of an actual amp that has its own character is just awesome. For example not every 5150 sounds the same. There are always some minor differences in sound and character based on the analog gear used.

Whenever we are able to put our hands on a new amp we make some profiles in different settings to capture unique sounds for your production.

Guitar edits made easy!

Always track guitars including the di signal in addition to your amp signal. The waveform visualization from a di signal comes in very handy, even if you do not want to reamp your guitars. You can clearly see the pick attack on first sight and you will not loose the attack on your guitar tracks. Your edits will be much more precise and it is an absolute time saver. Just link the channels to ensure that you always edit both tracks at once.

Reamping day is fun day!

Never get bored of chasing tones. The most important part is to have an idea of the guitar to sound in the context of the mix. Once you have your vision it should be very easy to find the right amp/cab or ampsim/IR to get a killer guitar tone and overall sound!!!

Found a gem again. While cleaning up some space this bad boy shows up. Totally forgot that i own it. A Seymour Duncan JB from the mid 80s. There are definitely some rumors around this specific JBJ version, which makes it very special to use. Years ago i made a comparison between four jb's (bridge position, same guitar, same strings) and found out that every jb had its own minor differences in sound. The old JBJ version definitely had it's more vintage, but well balanced sound At the end of the day they all did an amazing job that it was hard to tell which one sounded better. At least i found a version which completed the sound of this specific guitar. Some one might call it 'The beauty of analog gear'

Will definitely put the JBJ version in a guitar again!!!
