🩸LUCY UNDYING🩸

Lucy Undying by Kiersten White is a fabulous reinterpretation of Bram Stoker’s Dracula. I was able to read and fully enjoy the story without having read the classic text. But now that I know Lucy and the characters that surround her in life were created by Stoker, I’m eager to pick up my copy of the original novel.

We learn about Lucy’s life through a diary she wrote in 1890 at age 19, and the stories of her afterlife are shared through a transcribed therapy session in 2024. This was a very clever way of providing her full history and worked well with the present day first person narration of Iris.

When we meet Iris, she has traveled to London to sort out part of her recently inherited estate. It quickly becomes clear that she is caught up in some nefarious organization and her trip to London is only meant to be a quick stop to fund her escape.

Iris discovers Lucy’s journal hidden under the floorboards of Hillingham, the old mansion owned by and long-ago abandoned by her family. She finds a kindred spirit in Lucy who, like Iris, is dominated and manipulated by her mother and feels trapped in a life she does not want.

With a supporting cast of largely all female vampires, White spins a distinctly feminist retelling with cutting commentary on the predatory male gaze.

I wish I could share a sample of my favorite quotes, because White composes so many beautiful passages about time, home, femininity, and sense of self. You’ll just have to read the book to discover them for yourself, along with all the great twists and sapphic romance I’ve skipped for fear of triggering spoilers. 😉

📝REWRITE CHALLENGE📝

Today I challenged members of to feature a book they enjoyed, but would love to edit something about it. Suggestions included changing the setting, reducing the characters, or making it q***r.

My pick for the challenge is Ashley Poston’s The Dead Romantics. I shared my 4⭐️ review in August of 2022, not long after starting my Booksta account.

Here’s part of what I wrote:

“The Dead Romantics by Ashley Poston is a standard light romance with a paranormal twist.

This story had many of the elements I love: a long-absent adult sibling returns home, a main character who can see and communicate with ghosts, a supportive romance with fun banter, and themes of forgiveness and belonging. Also, the town mayor, a golden retriever, is a very good boy.”

Now, when I said “standard light romance” can you hear the disappointment in those words? At the time, I knew nothing about the “Capital R” Romance genre and its requirement of an HEA.

I absolutely loved the bittersweet beauty of this impossible romance! Until the end. NO! I did not want a happy ending!!

So. I would love to rewrite the ending of Dead Romantics, removing it from the Romance genre and reshelving it in Romantic Paranormal Fiction. This new version would get a 5⭐️ rating from me for sure.

❓Is there a book that you loved reading, but the ending tanked your rating?

🩸QUOTES from IMMORTAL DARK🩸

𝙎𝙚𝙚𝙠 𝙢𝙞𝙣𝙙 𝙖𝙗𝙤𝙫𝙚 𝙗𝙡𝙤𝙤𝙙, 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙞𝙛 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙢𝙪𝙨𝙩 𝙗𝙡𝙚𝙚𝙙, 𝙪𝙨𝙚 𝙞𝙩 𝙖𝙨 𝙞𝙣𝙠. This is the motto on Uxlay University’s crest. And it’s such a great quote to have foiled on Immortal Dark’s special edition.

Tigest Girma is a writer who takes great care with every sentence. I highlighted so many passages while reading that it was hard to pick which ones to feature. In the end, I chose two sets.

The first (see golden image) is a set of quotes both about and from Kidan’s study group friends. It’s clear how fiercely protective she is of this little circle.

The second set (see black & purple image) is a series of quotes from Kidan and Susenyos in reference to each other. These intense moments give a peek into their dark back and forth tug at each other.

Have I convinced you to read the book? Truly, if you enjoy dark fiction and vampires, put Immortal Dark on your TBR.

❓Do you make note of particular quotes and passages as you read? Do you annotate?

ICYMI - I posted my full review of Immortal Dark yesterday. Thanks again to and for providing both an e-galley and finished copy of the book for my stop on the IG tour.

🩸IMMORTAL DARK🩸

I realize it’s only the first week of September, but after reading TIGEST GIRMA’s IMMORTAL DARK, spooky season is officially on! I can’t think of a better book to kick-off my fall reading.

Thank you to and for providing me with a finished copy of the book and the opportunity to host a tour stop with my review. (For a full list of tour stops visit www.tbrbeyondtours.com)

Kidan Adane is convinced that her sister June is hidden away inside Uxlay University, the secret community where her parents were murdered. When her Aunt Silia dies, Kidan is next in line to inherit Adane House. But to become owner of the House, she must pass Dranacti - a notoriously challenging philosophy course on vampire-human relations - and share a home with Susenyos Sagad, the savage vampire she believes kidnapped her sister.

This story has it all - dark academia (REALLY DARK), mysterious societies, ancient vampires, family secrets, gorey violence, magical artifacts, and sexual tension.

Let me be clear. This world is deadly. There is no moral justification for the characters’ choices. But the shared darkness serves to bond a group of lonely, desperate individuals in friendship. And the more the main characters and their friends reveal about themselves, the more intriguing the book becomes.

Writing main characters that are defiantly unlikeable and unrelatable was a deliberate choice of the author. And that’s what makes this book so interesting. What happens if we let go of guilt and regret? What influences us to remain supportive of friends who make hurtful choices? What factors separate the desperate from the truly monstrous?

It’s not all dark philosophy, however. This book is packed with page-turning twists and turns as plots are uncovered and secrets are revealed. I’m really eager to see what Girma does with the rest of the trilogy.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

☕️TWISTED TEA☕️

I loved all the posts that circulated a while back, but didn’t connect with the three prompts. So when thinking of challenges for I returned to the idea and gave it my own twist.

T is for TEARS - a book that made me cry
E is for EXCITEMENT - a book I couldn’t put down
A is for A-HA! - a book that surprised me

The three books in my stack all have fantasy elements and allow me to share a little more about myself and my interests. (August’s theme for is “Make New Friends” because we’re all just getting to know each other.)

⏰I chose THIS TIME TOMORROW as the book that made me cry, because Emma Straub is one of my favorite contemporary fiction authors. This story also happens to include one of my top fantasy tropes - time travel. Straub consistently writes the most incredibly real familial relationships. She is an auto-buy author for sure.

⚔️THE OLEANDER SWORD is book two of Tasha Suri’s Burning Kingdoms Trilogy. The intensity of this story grows exponentially with each page. I absolutely could not put it down. This is one of my most recommended epic fantasy series, and I am absolutely dying for book three, The Lotus Empire to release in November.

🩸I knew immediately that I had to include BLOOD DEBTS by Terry J. Benton-Walker as the book that surprised me. I’m always happy for an excuse to promote one of Atlanta’s incredible YA authors, but also, no other book quite fit this prompt so well. This is a book written for teens, but the author pulls no punches. I found myself wide-eyed exclaiming “hot damn, he really went there!” (I had the same thought reading book two but for completely different reasons.)

☕️Topping my stack is a vintage Hallcraft by Eva Zeisel teacup in the pattern “Arizona.” I collect vintage Hall teapots and kind of fell into collecting Zeisel’s dishware lines with Hallcraft, as well.

❓Which book(s) would you share to fit the Twisted Tea prompts? Let me know in the comments or share your own post with

☀️RECOMMENDED READ☀️

This week’s prompt for is “FRIENDS FOREVER” and no friend bond is greater than the one created by the Ray.

In RAYBEARER by JORDAN IFUEKO, the young Crown Prince of Aritsar chooses eleven children to serve as his council. These anointed ones love him and love each other fiercely, openly, and honestly. The Ray allows them to speak to each other telepathically. If they are physically apart for too long they suffer Ray sickness, which can be as mild as a fever or at its extreme, drive one to madness.

Tarisai, who becomes a member of Prince Ekundayo’s council, is one of the most compelling main characters I’ve encountered in YA fantasy. She is sheltered, yet has a strong understanding of human nature and fairness. She was born and raised to fulfill her mother’s desire for vengeance, but is determined to discover her own singular purpose in life.

I’m looking forward to continuing Tarisai’s journey in REDEMPTOR.

🌟WITCHY WEDNESDAY🌟

Today’s featured witchy book is WITCHFUL THINKING by CELESTINE MARTIN. I picked up this book back in February at Love Y’all Romance Book Fest. I haven’t yet finalized my fall TBR list, but I plan to prioritize this paranormal romance.

How cute does this sound…?

Lucinda Caraway loves living in Freya Grove, the mystic seaside town where charms, hexes, and magical beings of all kinds are the norm. She spends her days teaching high school history and her nights reading tea leaves and tending to her conjure garden. It’s a good life . . . but she can’t stop wishing for more.

Until one night, that wish turns into a spell, and suddenly Lucy can’t say no. Not to a public karaoke performance. Not to running a 10K. And, most alarmingly, not to her high school crush, Alexander Dwyer, who needs her help unjinxing his new house—which just happens to be right across the street from hers.

WITCHFUL THINKING is book one of Martin’s Elemental Love series, followed by KISS AND SPELL. Book three, DEJA BREW, releases October 1st!

❓Are you someone who needs to say “yes” more often? Or do you overcommit and need to practice saying “no” to requests and invitations?

⭐️NEW RELEASE⭐️

Ahhhhh! I just loved Prince of the Palisades by Julian Winters! While I admit, I wasn’t especially drawn to the idea of a royal romance, I was quickly swayed and it was easy to root for the flawed and wounded Prince Jadon.

Jadon and Reiss - two q***r black boys - are charmingly adorable together. Their teasing banter and awkward moments would make even the most cynical reader smile. I loved how Reiss would call Jadon out when he was feeling wronged, pushing him into taking responsibility for his own behavior. And also encouraging him to stand up for himself and his beliefs.

The characters really are this book’s biggest strength. There are no throw away characters in the supporting cast. From the royal family and their entourage to Reiss’s protective friends and down-to-earth parents, each personality is well defined. Even the “villains” of the story are allowed to be multi-dimensional, instead of flat caricatures.

The author’s own big hearted, generous personality always shines through in his writing. If you’ve ever had the opportunity to meet Winters, you will recognize his joyous exuberance on the page.

I highly recommend this YA romance to anyone looking for a sweet and thoughtful feel-good read.

Wow! Thank you for these three amazing books! How great do you these covers look together?! (I think turquoise & teal shades must be having a moment.)

After reading each book’s summary, I can’t wait to dive into these pages!

𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑳𝒐𝒔𝒕 𝑩𝒐𝒚 𝒐𝒇 𝑺𝒂𝒏𝒕𝒂 𝑪𝒉𝒊𝒐𝒏𝒊𝒂 by Juliet Grames Francesca - a 27 year old, starry-eyed American - arrives in the isolated mountain village of Santa Chionia tasked with opening a nursery school. There is no road, no doctor, no running water or electricity.

When the water of a recent flood recedes, a human skeleton is found. An old woman begs Francesca to help determine if it’s her long-missing son. As an outsider, she might be the only person who can uncover the truth. Or she might be getting in over her head. (Available now)

𝑷𝒆𝒂𝒓𝒍 by Siân Hughes
Marianne is eight years old when her mother disappears. As time passes, she finds it difficult to adjust, fixated on the secrets she’s sure her father is keeping from her. In one of her mother’s dusty old books, she discovers a medieval poem called Pearl, and, trusting in the promise of its consolation, it seems as if her life begins to parallel the poem’s course. Marianne becomes ever more tormented, and as her childhood home begins to crumble, the past leads her down a path of self-destruction. (Available now)

One lost poem, two great rivers, and three remarkable lives - all connected by a single drop of water. Spanning centuries, continents, and cultures, this story asks who gets to control memory and what is the cost of forgetting. (Pub date: 8/20/24)

🔴⚪️⚫️SOMEDAY MAYBE

Today’s challenge for is “Someday Maybe,” a book or series that you want to read but keep putting off.

I had A Darker Shade of Magic on my shelf for quite some time before finally reading it in December of 2023. Eight months later, and I still haven’t returned to VE Schwab’s Shades of Magic trilogy. Hopefully, I won’t wait too much longer, because I really enjoyed book one.

I much prefer this original cover style compared to the new US covers printed last year to match The Fragile Threads of Power.

I have been a lover of fantasy stories since childhood. I’m still harboring the dream of finding Narnia at the back of a coat closet.

While in grad school, I read and enjoyed my paperback set of Tolkien’s Middle Earth, a gift from my father.

But it wasn’t until the release of A Discovery of Witches in 2011 that I found a contemporary author of fantasy written for an adult audience. I have since devoured every one of Deborah Harkness’s All Souls books. And while I continue to find amazing new fantasy authors, this series continues to stand as my favorite.

The eagerly awaited fifth volume of the series, The Black Bird Oracle, released last month. Sinking back into Diana and Matthew’s world was a delight! When composing my photos today, I decided to withhold this latest volume for its own feature in a couple weeks.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Slow Dance, the latest book from Rainbow Rowell, is one of the most beautiful stories I’ve ever read. If you’re a fan of second chance romance, achingly real characters, and perfectly crafted sentences, move this book to the top of your TBR.

I actually read Slow Dance back in June. Encouraged everyone in my chat groups to read it. Raved about the writing in a buddy read discussion. Poured back over the stunningly perfect bittersweet scenes I tabbed throughout the book.

When generously gifted me a copy of the finished hardcover, I was thrilled, because that meant I could confidently pull quotes to share with my review. But which ones?

My ARC is littered with tabs. As I reviewed them all, I quickly realized that I had marked multiple descriptions of kissing. Lines that weren’t tagged for their flaming passion, but for their originality and metaphoric brilliance.

So that’s what I’ve finally decided to share with you all. Two months after reading the book, I give you the best kissing quotes from Rainbow Rowell’s Slow Dance.

➡️Scroll through and enjoy!

❓Do you prefer the characters in a romance to be ordinary in appearance with average lives? Or do you prefer perfectly constructed specimens with amazing jobs, money, travel, etc?

💀DREADFUL💀

This book has such a fun set-up! Gav wakes up after an explosion, missing his eyebrows and his memories. He slowly learns the details of his life as a dark wizard, and finds himself very critical of his past deeds.

The supporting characters - those in and around the castle - are the book’s strength. I also appreciated how many of the characters played with the behaviors expected of them. They manipulated those expectations to gain power, protect themselves, and used being underestimated to their advantage.

But I wanted less of Gav’s ruminations and more humorous chaos. I wanted moat squids x 100.

I do love the art design of this paperback from B&N (design & illustration by Natasha MacKenzie). Slide image to see the fun skull and garlic edges.

📚MATCH THE SPINE📚

When I decided to post a stack, I knew immediately that I would use THE LAST BOYFRIENDS RULES FOR REVENGE by Matthew Hubbard. Perfect, right?

Not only is the spine a beautiful flaming rainbow, the story inside is…well…the story inside is also a beautiful flaming rainbow. 🌈 🔥

This is a story about friendship, standing up for yourself and your community, and how being seen in all your messy glory can inspire others.

It was a joy to meet last month and I’m looking forward to more books from this big-hearted YA author.

📖NOW IN PAPERBACK📖

Yesterday I shared my TBR of this week’s new titles. Here’s another that I’m ashamed to say is still waiting to be read - THE BEST POSSIBLE EXPERIENCE, a short story collection with rave reviews.

If you enjoy story collections, check this one out. The paperback edition released this week. Thank you to and for my copies.

THE BEST POSSIBLE EXPERIENCE by Nishanth Injam is a collection of short stories, painting a portrait of contemporary India and its diaspora and a yearning rendering of the people and places we call home.

▪️A young man trapped on a bus on the way to visit his parents as his fellow passengers vanish into the restroom.

▪️A family, newly in America, determined to host a perfect luncheon for their son’s white classmate—with no idea what to serve him.

▪️A woman who returns to a small village in India every summer to visit the grandfather who raised her, a man who lives with the ghosts of his son and his wife.

▪️A man preparing for his green card interview with the American woman he has paid to marry him.

These stories question what it means to have a home and to return home, and show, above all, that home is not a place so much as it is people who are ready to accept you as you are.

❓Do you enjoy short story collections? Any recommendations? Any on your TBR?

☕️TEA & CURRENT READ☕️

I’m close to half way through THE BLACK BIRD ORACLE (), and it’s been a pleasure becoming reacquainted with Diana Bishop.

Before I picked up my book last night, I read an online article from Elle magazine featuring Harkness and her latest All Souls installment. What the author says about Diana’s journey is immensely relatable. She may be a powerful witch, but Diana faces choices common to so many women in mid-life.

➡️ See Slide 2 for a quote from the article

I started my evening reading at 11:30 pm and couldn’t stop until 2:15 am. Gonna brew one more mug of tea and get back to it!

✨NEW RELEASES✨

I add so many new releases to my TBR each week that I will need to live ten lifetimes to read them all. That’s entirely possible, right?

**********
Let’s start by celebrating some Atlanta-area authors:

💀This week bookstores welcomed THE WHITE GUY DIES FIRST, an anthology edited by the fabulous Terry J. Benton-Walker. Benton-Walker gathered an amazing group of YA authors for these “13 Scary Stories of Fear and Power.”

🌹Mary McMyne released A ROSE BY ANY OTHER NAME, inspired by the mysterious “Dark Lady” of Shakespeare’s sonnets. Thanks to I have an extra copy, so stay tuned for a giveaway early next week.

🚤I stumbled on CAMP LANIER by Sylvester Barzey on NetGalley and could not resist downloading the eARC. If you live in Georgia, you know Lake Lanier has a reputation for being cursed! Thank you Sterling & Stone for sharing this galley.

**********
I’ve added three romances to my TBR:

⏰I love stories that play with time. In THE BACKTRACK by Erin La Rosa, a mysterious CD player provides glimpses of a past that could’ve been.

🐐HATE TO FAKE IT TO YOU by Amanda Sellet has goats on the cover. And honestly, that’s all it took to catch my interest.

💕DASHED by Amanda Quain is described as “a contemporary update of Sense and Sensibility.” (Anyone else here who has never read an Austen novel?)

**********
I’m also featuring three fantasies:

🗡️Arthurian-inspired stories are a weakness of mine, so I’m eager to read THE BRIGHT SWORD by Lev Grossman.

🤩Both THE WEST PASSAGE by Jared Pechacek and THE SPICE GATE by Prashanth Srivatsa are on my shopping list.

**********
Writer Samantha Jayne Allen shared a rave review this week for TROUBLE IN QUEENSTOWN by Delia Pitts. I’m fortunate to have an e-galley of this mystery from and hope to read it soon.

It’s been a while since I’ve read a memoir. My next might be DOCILE by Hyeseung Song. This one is not yet on my shelves, but I’ll be looking out for it at my local indie bookstores.

**Thank you to the tagged publishers above for providing me with ARCs**

❓Do we have any TBR titles in common?
