Buffalo In The Clouds I’m an Italian living in Santa Barbara, California. I then moved to California and started to document my bike adventures through photos and videos.

I started bikepacking in the summer of 2022 when I biked my new gravel bike (aka Buffalo) from my hometown Piacenza to Florence. Follow me for more bikepacking content and to discover the less-known gems of California! See you on the road! To follow me: https://linktr.ee/buffalointheclouds

Day 3 from Santa Barbara to San Diego

Start: Laguna Beach; end: Downtown San Diego

Distance: 130km; elevation: 840m

After a nice shower at the campground, I started biking and stopped for coffee/call with my best friend at Laguna Beach (posh but cute!). I continued riding until I reached the Marine Corps Base of Camp Pendleton. For the first part of the camp you can ride along a bike lane. Then, you’ve got to continue on the highway unless you have a permit. I rode on the highway (a lot of traffic but relatively safe) and stopped for lunch at In-N-Out. The rest of the day was pretty chill, apart from a steep climb around km 100th that had me sweat like a pig! I arrived at my motel in the heart of the San Diego movida, took a quick shower and headed over to an Italian restaurant where I bonded with some compatriots! Great ending for my first bike packing trip with the Extrema! Although my butt was hurting soooo much due to my cheap bike shorts that were not adapted for such a long bike ride (I even had to ask my waiter for a pillow to sit on 😅).

Day 2 from Santa Barbara to San Diego

Start: Malibu; end: Crystal Cove State Park (Laguna Beach)

Distance: 150km; elevation: 660m

I left at 10am after a nice breakfast at the campsite. It was my second time riding in Malibu and it did not disappoint! After a short detour to Point Dume, I continued on the 1 and stopped for pizza (5/10…) and coffee (8/10) near the Malibu Lagoon. Then straight to Santa Monica and Venice Beach where I watched this amazing kid singing and dancing like Michael Jackson (see episode 6, coming soon!). It was getting late so I pushed through Torrance, Long Beach and Newport Beach. I camped at the Crystal Cove State Park. Not the best experience to be honest. The park did not have a bike/hike section. The ranger was new and, at first, did not want to accommodate me without a reservation. After calling his supervisor, he directed me to a rocky flat ground where I could camp. The area was not the best as I struggled to set up my tent (even flexed one tent stake). I even paid $25 (vs the usual bike fee of $10). Anywho…lesson learnt! Overall, good day even though at the end I was really tired.
Stay tuned for the photos of day 3!

Day 1 from Santa Barbara to San Diego

Start: Santa Barbara; end: Leo Carrillo State Park (Malibu)

Distance: 101km; elevation: 350m

I followed the coastline and rode through Montecito, Carpinteria and Ventura where I had lunch at our usual Mexican restaurant “Corrales”. After that, a swift ride through Oxnard to finally arrive to Malibu where I camped at the Leo Carrillo State Park. Pretty easy day since I was already familiar with the road and the elevation was only mild. The campground was really nice, equipped with a bike/hike section, hot showers and a little convenience store, immersed in a cozy fog created by the smoke of the campers’ bbq. I took a nice hot shower and enjoyed a meal with a company of a cute raccoon who stared at me the whole time!
Stay tuned for the photos of day 2!
