A djembefola is "one who gives the djembe voice." The djembe or jembe—one of the most well known African musical instruments—is a rope-tuned skin-covered goblet drum played with bare hands, originally from West Africa. Storytellers and healers find the djembe's brilliant and expressive voice the perfect complement to their art.

The jembe is an intrinsic part of West African culture from the 1230 AD and the time of the Mali Empire, perhaps even predating it, reaching back several centuries, or more than a millennium. It is believed that the drum contains three spirits: the spirit of the tree from which it was made, the spirit of the animal whose skin is played, and the spirit of the carver who cut the tree and assembled the drum.

It is this history and spirit of the continent's music, art, and soul that jembefola.com aims to channel and explore. Here you can read stories and listen to audiobooks from Africans and the African Diaspora.

“Olivia...often imagines a future for Black people that is not just equitable, but magical. Fantastical. A world in which the Black experience isn't connected to pain or trauma, to slavery or police brutality. Where Black life isn't viewed as a monolith.”

Many thanks to reporter Savannah Eadens for doing a write-up on me and AURELIA LEO Courier Journal!
