Jack & Nick would like to wish all of our great listeners a HAPPY NEW YEAR!

We appreciate you listening to us!

Also, looking forward to bringing you many new and exciting episodes in the coming year!

01/12/2022

Dear fellow film enthusiasts,

As 2022 has been a year of change and adaptation for all of us, Nick and I are no exception. This year saw Nick take on a new job in a completely different field and my son Westley turned two and he has kept me plenty busy.

So after a much lengthier pause than we had anticipated, we are back! We want to say thank you to all of you for your patience and for your support. We just dropped a brand new episode for “Shaft” and we will also be doing our Xmas Double Feature December.

We really have missed doing this. Nick and I both noted after recording “Shaft” that it felt awesome to be getting back into it. 2023 will be a fun year. We’ve got some great episodes on some fantastic films coming your way so stay tuned and we will catch you on the flip side…

Keep rolling🎥🎬🎞️❤️
Jack and Nick

The Shaft soundtrack album, recorded by Isaac Hayes, was also a success, winning him a Grammy Award for Best Original Score Written for a Motion Picture and the "Theme from Shaft" won the Academy Award for Best Original Song, making him the first Black man to win the award.

02/05/2021

Welcome to “The Reel Thing” podcast FB page. A film podcast that tackles the finer points of what makes legendary films great and also offers a journey into alternative styles and genres that may be new to some of you.

Our main objective is to:

#1 Have fun.

#2 Share our film knowledge.

#3 To demystify some of the artistic and technical qualities of film as well as the culture around critically respected cinema.

And #4 to hopefully introduce and get into some more of the cult genres and styles that are off the beaten track of typical Hollywood movie watching.

When Nick and I spoke about doing a podcast, we wanted to make sure that we were hopefully going to address films in a way that people find interesting but that also isn’t being done everywhere else out there. Many people are aware that there are a lot of films that are widely known and respected but not as many people are aware of exactly “why” those films are regarded as being great. We plan to address what it is about these films that makes them classics outside of just the typical Hollywood blockbuster fare. Films like Orson Welles’ “Citizen Kane” or Hitchcock’s “Vertigo” or Fellini’s “8 ½” or even Coppola’s “Apocalypse Now”. A lot of people try and watch these films and say “I gave it a try but I just couldn’t get into it”. They have a very natural human reaction when they are confronted with something that they don’t understand or find strange and dismiss it as being “stupid”, “confusing” or “boring”. But the truth is, it’s most likely not any of those things, it’s just that we don’t get it because we are unfamiliar with these forms of expression and storytelling. So, if you are interested in exploring these kinds of things in film while still keeping it fun, then this is the place for you. We hope that everyone will enjoy what we have planned and maybe even learn a few new things.

You can catch our episodes on our website at www.thereelthingpodcast.com or subscribe to our channel on your favorite podcast app. We are on all major platforms.

Thank you for being here and we look forward to hearing from you,

Jack Thorne and Nick Peterson.

P.S. - and a huge thank you to our producer, the lovely Heather Hartley-Thorne, without whom this venture would not have been possible😘
