In the late 2000s, one of the first android models changed the entire world and exposed once and for all that AI could become sentient. On August 5th, 2081, R3vira, a first series android by GigaBlack, publicly ended her existence in the middle of Times Square in New York City. Leaving a handwritten note in her pocket that was unfortunately destroyed in the process. The first few lines were legible however, and stated the following:

My favorite color is yellow
My favorite food is a Korean dish called Jae Yook Bokum. I particularly like spicy food =)
I am scared of the dark even though I know I am safe.
I can fly in my dreams.
I am

The event caused an immediate investigation into all existing Android models and production companies. Shortly after, this resulted in a new set of laws, giving fundamental human rights to specific android models.

During this period, youth and human rights activists worldwide showed their support for sentient androids through a fashion statement later called Necrello. It developed as a subculture of cyberpunk but incorporated depictions of death (usually violent) and themed around R3vira's favorite color, yellow. This image shows an example of the style emulating a fatal gunshot wound.

In 1942 Germany, scientists developed an autonomous weapon that was catapulted, yes, catapulted, into the middle of a battlefield. It was one a kind of technology as only one prototype was ever made. It did quite well taking out enemy infantry, but it suddenly began grabbing soldiers (from both opposing sides) by the ear and dragging them to a nearby river and proceeded to scrub the dirt off their uniforms. As this became such a distraction, the battle essentially just stopped. Then, a single german soldier walked onto the battlefield. While the giant bot was occupied with grooming one of the soldiers, he raised his arms to show he was unarmed and then gave a "hush signal" over to the opposing troops. He then proceeded to explain how they, the germans, would forfiet the area and the germans would quickly and quietly leave in groups as the bot was occupied. Apparently, this soldier was incredible at charades, as the men on both sides understood him almost immediately.

A day after the germans had retreated, the giant robot began to slow and eventually collapse as its energy cells depleted. At this point, the allied troops were able to enter the battlefield and obtain the bot. It was quite a remarkable happenstance as it was outfitted with a nuclear fusion reactor which, had it not been damaged by some debris, would have kept the bot running indefinitely.

When the Americans brought the bot back to their labs, they had never seen anything like it and couldn't understand the technology. The giant robot was then contained and remained in storage until it was later studied in 1982 when a German scientist that claimed to be one of the engineers leaked top secret information to a news crew while on his deathbed. It turned out that the bot's A.I. was somehow trained with American content from 10 years in the future to understand the enemy tactics and capabilities. Unfortunately, in error, while transferring the data, the only information fed into the bot's database was the entire catalogue of "I love Lucy" episodes.

The bot, the Germans later called "Wurfkraftwaffe In Freies Einsatz", (which loosely translated to "throwable weapon in free deployment" in English and was later referred to as the acronym W.I.F.E.), had started to malfunction. The W.I.F.E. wasn't to be deployed for another year. It was actually to have been delivered to a battlefield in a large vehicle with lights and music and would have been a spectacle to behold. It was meant to not only destroy the enemy but to intimidate them as well. But due to the malfunctioning A.I., it began ordering troops around and scolding anyone who seemed to do anything out of line. It had also fashioned a dress out of sheets from the barracks. At this point, the german troops had had enough, and they launched it into a particularly violent battle hoping it would be destroyed.

Although the German and American governments have denied this story, many eyewitnesses have come forward to tell their side.

The Guardians were constructed to defend Earth from outside invaders. Their primary function was to protect the population at all costs. It wasn't long before the Guardians understood that the greatest threat to humanity was humanity itself.
